Young Americans
Young Americans
Price: £5.00

3.0 out of 5 stars Not his best album, but still.., 13 May 2016
This review is from: Young Americans (Audio CD)
I have always been a huge fan of David Bowie's work, but I never particularly liked Young Americans. To me, Bowie was paying homage to his mid-70s obsession with soul on this album, and I see it more as a stylistic exercise on his part than a substantive album. There are some good tracks on it though, most notably Fame (a collaboration with John Lennon) and the title track itself. But there's also a fair amount of filler by Bowie's standards. There are some notable guest appearances though, such as John Lennon on Across The Universe and the aforementioned Fame, as well as a young Luther Vandross on backing vocals. I felt that he returned to form after this, with the slightly deranged Station To Station album and then then the excellent Berlin trilogy of Low, Heroes and Lodger.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not John Lennon's best, but good enough, 3 Mar. 2016
This review is from: Imagine (Audio CD)
This 2010 remaster of Imagine was remastered from the original mixes, unlike the 2000 CD reissue which was remixed and remastered from the original multitrack tapes.I have the 2000 version of this album, and to me it sounds far better than the 2010 remaster. I always thought that the original mixes of Imagine sounded muddy and dull, so I much prefer the 2000 version. To me the Imagine album itself isn't one of John's best, I prefer the much edgier Plastic Ono Band album. Songs like Imagine are good but vastly overplayed, It's So Hard is still really hard to listen to, and Jealous Guy just sounds self-pitying. There are some good songs on here though, my three standout tracks are I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier, How Do You Sleep? and How?, I just think that the Imagine album as a whole is a bit uneven, but definitely one to own if you have any interest in his solo career.

4.0 out of 5 stars A slightly different Bowie compilation..., 1 Mar. 2016
This review is from: The Collection (Audio CD)
There have been so many David Bowie compilations released over the years that they are virtually a sub-genre of music in themselves. This one ignores the obvious hits that make up most compilations, and instead presents one track from each of his RCA albums from 1969-80(except the covers album Pin-Ups). The songs featured are every bit as good as the more well-known Bowie material and I would imagine that it's aimed at those who have bought one of the many compilations and perhaps one or two of the original albums and are wanting to delve a bit deeper into his excellent back catalogue. This CD is also said to be copy-protected, but I have had no problem playing it in any device or ripping the tracks to my computer. Recommended then if you want to know a bit more about the late, great David Bowie, but if you just want to hear the hits then head for one of the many compilations.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless.., 31 Dec. 2015
Absolutely useless,it really is best to avoid this and get something decent. It cannot be made to work on a Windows 7 computer no matter what. I see from the various reviews that I am far from being the only one having problems with it. This is going in the bin where it belongs.

Deep Purple
Deep Purple
Price: £5.75

4.0 out of 5 stars Good early Purple album, 22 Mar. 2015
This review is from: Deep Purple (Audio CD)
This was the third and final album by the original Mk.1 Deep Purple line-up, and captures the band in transition towards the heavier sound of In Rock and Machine Head. By the time of its UK release in late 1969, both the original singer Rod Evans and bassist Nick Simper had been fired from the band and replaced with Ian Gillan and Roger Glover respectively. Songs like The Painter and Bird Has Flown hinted at this heavier direction, while the remaining tracks such as Lalena and Blind are in more of a progressive rock vein. So while this album is less well known than the likes of In Rock and Machine Head, it is a worthwhile listen nonetheless.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value and does what it's supposed to.., 3 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have just bought one of these to replace a digital hot water timer that suddenly decided to stop working. I decided to try this mechanical one because digital timers can be a pain to set and also because of its low price and mostly good reviews. It took me under an hour to remove the old timer and install and set the new one, and it works fine. Setting this timer is easy enough, and as with all immersion timers there is a manual override switch that can be used should you need to boost your hot water supply during the day. It is of course best to avoid using the override during the day if possible as daytime electricity prices on the Economy 7 tariff can be double the night time price, and a red LED indicates when the override is in use or during the hours that the timer is set to come on.
So I would definitely recommend this as a good no frills timer that's good value and does what it's supposed to.

1.0 out of 5 stars Best avoided, like most cheap PSUs..., 2 May 2013
I would guess that the reviewers giving this PSU 5 stars are only doing so because it was very cheap, and because their computer hasn't(yet)failed. I can't understand why some people are taking the risk of using it to power processors and videocards that cost far more than this PSU does. If it fails(as seems likely, judging by many of the reviews)then you risk damaging these and possibly other components such as your motherboard too. And you can bet that will cost more than £22 to put right if it happens..

5.0 out of 5 stars A good quality and reasonably priced Freesat receiver..., 8 Oct. 2012
Humax Digital Satellite Set Top Box - Freesat - Foxsat HD
I'd read several good reviews online for the Humax Foxsat HD and so I decided on this box as an upgrade to replace an old Ross satellite receiver I'd been using. The Humax was a great improvement in every way and has excellent sound and picture quality, particularly on HD channels such as BBC1 HD. I use it in conjunction with a Sky Minidish and a Zinwell Quad LNB, and with this dish correctly aligned I get a signal strength of 90-100% on most channels including HD ones. It's also quite user-friendly and has a clearly laid out Remote Control and clear, easy to navigate on-screen menus. Connectivity is also good with an HDMI output, RCA jacks for both Composite and Component video and analogue audio outputs, 2 SCART sockets and also an Ethernet socket. The first SCART socket is for connecting to the TV and can be set to output either RGB, Composite or S-Video signals while the 2nd SCART socket is for connecting a VCR or DVD recorder.

Setting up Freesat is quite a simple process but it's vital that your satellite dish is correctly aligned for this to work so that the Freesat postcode checker can detect your location and load the channels onto the receiver. Correct dish alignment is of course also important to achieve good signal strength and reception quality. If you're happy to do this yourself, accurate dish alignment can be done with a signal strength meter such as a Konig. These cost around £10 online, much cheaper than the £50+ cost of calling out an engineer to do it for you. Another important alignment setting is the LNB skew angle, if you're using a Sky Minidish then the LNB will usually have some markings on it from 1-5. This needs to be set to 3 for most areas of the UK. As well as all the usual Freesat channels, additional channels can be viewed by switching the receiver to non-Freesat mode. This gives access to channels that are not part of Freesat such as Sky News, Challenge TV, Controversial TV, Pick TV, Travel Channel, Greatest Hits TV and Showcase 2.

The Foxsat also comes with a standard 1-year warranty, which can be extended to 2 years free of charge by registering online. In conclusion I'd definitely recommend the Foxsat to anyone wanting a good quality and reasonably priced Freesat receiver as an alternative to the ever-increasing cost of a Sky or Cable subscription.

Easy Fit Satellite Signal Amplifier Booster & Patch Lead by electrosmart®

This satellite signal booster did not work very well for me, I found it actually reduced my signal level rather than boosted it. I would stress that I have no issues with the seller though, as it arrived well packaged after only a couple of days. And yes, I did make sure it was installed the right way round..

5.0 out of 5 stars Still one of the best thermal pastes.., 29 Dec. 2011
Whenever I buy a new Graphics card or CPU cooler I always thoroughly clean off the supplied thermal paste and replace it with some Arctic Silver 5. It always does a better job than stock thermal paste and keeps things a lot cooler. It's also economical to use as you only need to use a small amount, so a single tube should last quite a while.
