2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointment Personified, 25 Feb. 2015
I'm not sure why this was ever given the title 'masterpiece' because it certainly is not. What a disappointment. Billed as the successor to "Oh Brother" it just so isn't; OB had sublime characters, wonderful plot all held together with that iconic soundtrack, yes ok there is some nice music here but Bugger All Happens; movies need to be about escapism not some sad git having a rubbish week. A film for critics to get excited about. The rest of us will watch something more interesting (or read a book).

5.0 out of 5 stars Hebridean classic, 1 May 2010
This review is from: Sea Room (Paperback)
This is a tremendous book. It is written with love but also precision. It is a microcosm of the history of the Western Isles and its ecosystem, but also a personal journey of discovery. I 1st read it last year, and gave my copy to my sister, am re-reading it again already (it's that good) so on my 2nd copy already!
Compares to Gavin Maxwell's "Ring of Bright Water" for readability and evocation of the West Coast. I grew up in this area, and Sea Room takes me back there effortlessly, but also has increased my knowledge not only of this area, but of how wider systems interact. A gem.

4.0 out of 5 stars A minor classic, 6 Feb. 2010
This review is from: Eastern Approaches (Paperback)
Was wanting to read this for years, and had heard about it from respected sources, so maybe my expectation was too high, because the 1st half of the book never delivered, however MacLeans experiences in WWII Yugoslavia are amazing, and these rescue this work and make it a fascinating read.
