5.0 out of 5 stars Tommy Victor is the man!, 6 April 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I admit to a little trepidation when hearing that Prong were planning to release a covers album.
I needn't have worried.
Prong are consistently awesome, bucking the trend of their peers by actually improving with every new album.
So what is this covers album all about? These are ex CBGB's soundman, Tommy Victors tunes. Drawing predominantly from hardcore bands, Discharge, Bad Brains, Fugazi and Black Flag the album also throws more left field numbers like Sisters Of Mercy's 'Vision Thing' and Killing Joke (obviously a huge influence on Victor).
It all sounds like Prong with those razor sharp guitars and sick throbbing bass, just awesome different shades of Prong and when final tune, Cortez the Killer by Neil Young rolls around you'll wonder how Prong can sound like Prong, playing a Neil Young song and it still being the coolest song on the album.
'Cos Tommy Victor is the man.

5.0 out of 5 stars just run em...., 28 Sept. 2013
This review is from: Run The Jewels (Audio CD)
After teaming up on killer mikes most excellent 2012 album R.A.P. music, produced and guested on by EL-P, the duo decided to team up again and have a crack at a full length album together.
To anyone who was a fan of ' R.A.P. music' or EL's 'cancer4cure' will find themselves in familiar territory with this record. Mikes trademark southeren drawl, laced with wit, hidden barbs and insight on top of EL's dystopian, hellish, futuristic beats.
El raps a hell of a lot on this record too, taking the lead on many songs and doing a damn fine job of it. Arguably does some of the best vocals he's done on any of his previous records to date, while killer mike, the more accomplished rapper overall you would say, seems happier to notch it down a little and let his buddy hit the big lines. Big boi from outcast makes a guest appearance on the track 'bannana clipper'.
Its an aggresive, hard rap album. A synth, big beat driven nightmare. Not as tunefull as 'R.A.P.' music but just as expertly crafted by a duo who are the perfect for one another. Think of a post apocalyptic eric b and rakim.
Originally released as a free mp3 download via foolsgold records back in summer its now avaliable to buy on cd if you missed the mp3 or, like me, stuck in the past and still like having actual cds.

5.0 out of 5 stars the ultimate thrash album, 29 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Its quite sad, four reviews (five now i suppose) for the greatest thrash album ever made.
Such a unique band that had a different approach to the thrash movement of the 80's, early 90's than the other bands of the genre, not dark and scary like slayer, not ultra serious like metallica and not flirting with the big hair like anthrax and megadeth. Suicidal had emotions to them the others never touched. Mike Muir wrestles with paranoia and inner demons as par for the course but he's not afraid to let rip on other subject such as love and feeling 'lovely', all set to a ferocious pace with that slamming funk/harcore edge.
It all works, and on this album they completely nailed it/smashed it in a way they never did again.
No point in selecting standout tracks as in, the definition of classic is that it is the piece as a whole that makes it work.
From start to finish, the best thrash album ever made if not even strictly speaking, thrash.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best since Cleansing., 15 July 2012

Magnificent return to form. Best metal album in years.
Prong have been guilty of some very patchy more recent releases, 'Scorpio Rising' i just didnt get, 'Power of the damager' had an odd production and could of benefited from an actual bass sound as the low down groove that for me is so integral to the classic Prong sound was missing completely from that record.
The good news is Prong are most definately back, back with that sick low bass throb and glorious bursts of speed.
Not one bit of this album sounds like old geezers going through the motions (metallica/slayer?) it all sounds so vital, sharp.
Other reviewers have said this album should have been the follow up to 'Cleansing', i'd agree but i'd go even further and say this is actually a sronger album than 'Cleansing',side b was a bit crap really.
Revenge best served cold is probably the best tune on the record and may rival snap your fingers for Prongs best song.
Carved into Stone-rifftastic, huge sound, thrashy, thrashy.

So Anti-pop-consortium meets EL-P in a seedy nightclub where the music sucks, they adjourn to the alley for a knee trembler and the resulting offspring is taught to speak by Aesop Rock. Well.. not quite. Breaking Kayfabe sounds nothing exactly like these brave new pioneers of modern hip hop but you can see the family genetic footprint. This is a very accomplished record. A frankly stunning record. Sharing the production ethic of avoiding heavy samples for self programming the bleeps, bloops and heavy synth waves of the aformentioned artists. Its a wonderfully rewarding record and requires several listens to fully begin to digest the intricacies of the production. Cadence Weapon, (poet laureate in his hometown of Edmonton, no really) has a delivery similar to Aesop Rock to my ear, very poetic but a little more decipherable.
Standout tunes? well, it seems more of a whole body of work, every song is so interesting but '30 seconds' a sharp song about the advertising industry is probably my pick of the bunch. 'Black Hand' and 'Oliver Square' are also serious contenders.
If you like El-P, Aesop Rock, A.P.C.,Death Grips and love the way this new hip hop 'sound' is moving, get this.....
Its like £3.00 or something, seriously!
This review name checks a lot, Guilty. Its some sort of starting post, a general area to almost describe the sound.
Truth is, this is a very unique record and you should hear it for yourself.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.... well, i can honestly say i have never heard anything quite like this before. I have heard records that have hinted at such an uncompromising aural attack, flirted at the concept but never anything with this much conviction. Back in the day i liked a lot of death metal, Morbid Angel,Deicide and such like. My musical tastes have gravitated towards more rap stuff these days BUT, and heres my point, stick with me, 'The Money Store' after several listens now reminds me a lot of Napalm Deaths debut 'Scum'. Not musicaly of course but in terms of attitude, shape and form.
Its addictive, its unique, its also sometimes to much to handle. You have to be in the mood for this record because it absolutely does not take any prisoners, your neighbours will hate it.
How to descibe 'The Money Store' musicaly? Rapping/shouting/chanting over dense beats/noises/alarms/explosions, a digital, hellish black mass led by a lunatic shaman who moonlights as a serial killer. I feel im not doing this justice here...
If your reading reviews about this record then you must have more than a passing interest in the subject. What does it cost? a tenner? Buy it and experience it.

El-p's third album proper is arguably also his most accessible release to date yet. This is not to say that the Brooklyn producer/mc supremo has in any way mellowed in his unique sound quite the opposite.
Cancer 4 Cure is a much more focused and to the point album than either Fantastic Damage or I'll Sleep When Your Dead and in doing so only inreases the sonic bludgeon. First track 'Request Denied' kicks off with a huge big beat sound reminisent of something that could be on The Prodigy's 'Jillted Generation' flowing seemlessly into the ultra heavy low bass throb of 'The Full Retard' (my personal favourite on the record). The production is awsome and the El-p's flow is sharp and completely unique. From there the record never lets up. 'Drones Over Brooklyn' is another stand out along with 'Tougher Colder Killer' and 'True Story' I've deen an El-p fan for a while, this is his best work to date yet. I cant wait to see what this guy does next. If you get this and you dig it, check out Killer Mikes new record R.A.P. music, produced by El-p. Its a monster.

really cool, wittily written lyrics, heavily influenced by epmd. same sense of fun and distinct lack of macho crap so prevalent in hip hop today. like a step back to guys rapping about actual real everyday stuff like playing streetfighter with your mates instead of posing in niteclubs. its lighthearted but the sound is solid n' kicks throughout. restored my faith in hip hop cos it really had started to suck recently.
