3.0 out of 5 stars Hardware good, software and supplied map rather limited., 28 Feb. 2015
The physical device is excellent, being rugged and well protected from weather and knocks. Its limitations are the software and the supplied map. The software is not in my opinion very user friendly. A confusing menu system coupled with inability to delete individual way points make it cumbersome. It also tends to over read distance covered on walks, typically an 8 km walk will be recorded as 9 km or more. However, it is accurate at showing your position. The worst limitation is the supplied map. Generally it does not show footpaths (at least in the UK), an essential for walkers. Also many features such as streams, ponds and canals are often not shown. Whereas this is understandable as it is a world map, it's not much help. It would be better if maps could be regularly updated for the locality where you want to use it. There is a fix for this, there is an enthusiasts site in Germany where, for a small fee, you can access their site and download more detailed maps to use instead of the supplied map. I now have detailed maps of UK and France, making the device much more useful. Last comment, the device seems very geared towards geocaching, which I am not into.

4.0 out of 5 stars Generally a good summary of the basics of Christian faith, 18 Feb. 2015

This review is from: Mere Christianity (Kindle Edition)
Generally a good representation of the Christian faith, although IMO some of Lewis' views are outdated and a few things might be disputed by today's Christians. For example his views on some sexuality issues seem to be products of his time, and his support for the death penalty was something I deemed to be rather shocking. It is important to remember that it was written in the early fifties based on radio talks given just after the Second World War. The book attempts to find the common ground for most Christians, and much of what he says I find myself agreeing with. However some views have changed since then, as a result of what science has been able to show regarding human nature. Nowadays, especially in the field of human sexuality, some things are now accepted widely as variations within the normal spectrum, and not conditions that should be 'corrected' in some way. In the forward, Lewis does say ".. I have a reluctance to say much about temptations to which I myself am not exposed." Generally he keeps to that, it's a pity more don't follow his example...

Lord of the Flies
Lord of the Flies

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep and thought-provoking work., 14 July 2014

This review is from: Lord of the Flies (Kindle Edition)
A classic that has so many deeper meanings and interpretations, which in my younger days was a standard text for Secondary School reading and discussion. Based on the earlier "The Coral Island" by R. M. Ballantyne, Lord of the Flies attempts to portray how REAL boys would be likely to behave if marooned on a remote island, rather than Ballantyne's perhaps naive and rather idealised version of boyish behaviour. To be fair to Ballantyne, though, he has only three boys marooned on his Island, and IMO three may well work much better together than the crowd marooned on Golding's island. Lord of the Flies can be seen as representing a microcosm of our world and how humanity behaves in reality. Golding has the boys marooned there during a nuclear war, showing a parallel between the boys' behaviour and the behaviour of the adults in the larger world. I thoroughly recommend this very thought-provoking book.

3.0 out of 5 stars A book 'Of its time'., 14 July 2014

This review is from: The Coral Island (Kindle Edition)
This is a classic, but a book very much 'of its time'. It is worth reading for anyone interested in Golding's 'Lord of the Flies' which is based on this earlier work. However, there are other marked differences, and one primary one being that only three boys are marooned on Coral Island, rather than the large group in 'Lord of the Flies'. Thus I think it is fair to say that three may well have worked better together than a large crowd. The Coral Island, being of its time, contains some race-related language and comments that are deemed offensive in our time, and this should be borne in mind. The latter part of the book, after they have left Coral Island, becomes much of a treatise on Christianity and its supposed ability to 'tame the savage' almost instantly. The lack of realism and a failure to acknowledge the fragility of 'civilisation' are the weaknesses Golding tries to address in the later 'Lord of the Flies'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solves ease of use problem for elderly or disabled., 16 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is exactly what's wanted for elderly or disabled people who have trouble using TV remotes and hit wrong buttons, because there aren't any 'wrong' buttons! It's got just what you need, and nothing else. That is, volume up/down, channel up/down, on/off.

Very easy to set up, using the TV's own remote. Only comments: With many remotes there is only one button for on/off, in which case here the 'On' button does nothing and the 'Off' button works for both On and Off. Also, holding down the volume buttons doesn't self-repeat, so repeated presses are necessary when changing volume setting.

3.0 out of 5 stars Aquarell not Mondeluz, 11 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
These were described as 'Mondeluz' but when they arrived they were Aquarell. I cannot find the name Mondeluz anywhere on the packaging. However, the pencils are acceptable quality at the price - but not quite as good as the Mondeluz ones at my art group which was what I thought I was going to receive. These should have been sold as Aquarell pencils, which they are, and not Mondeluz, which they are not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality product at good price, 27 July 2013

I was surprised at the quality of this product, A good choice if you want a budget exerciser that stows away reasonably well. Much better than friction ones, too. Computer is good and gives readouts of time, speed, distance, calories used up and pulse rate. 8 resistance settings easily adjusted whilst exercising.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful, 29 Jun. 2013

I bought this to help me resolve problems with an Android-based tablet PC. (Android was developed based closely on Linux). I knew nothing about Linux or Android (although I used to have quite a good knowledge of MSDOS), and this little guide proved invaluable in coming to terms with the basics of Android. Nicely low-priced, and downloaded to my Kindle app whilst I was away from home. Much appreciated.
