5.0 out of 5 stars Great ..., 13 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
These came with an original price on the packaging of £40, which would not seem unreasonable for what you get (I paid £20)...
In addition to having quite a decent hydrostatic head (properly waterproof), they also have a comfortable lining that stops the trousers sticking to your legs as you move in them (as lower quality waterproof trousers I have had in the past do)...
My only criticism?
They need some system for tightening the ankles for those of us who are shorter in the leg... You otherwise tread on the leg bottoms whilst walking.
I have already cheaply & simply modified mine to do this anyway, but it would have been nice to have this from purchase..
I also thought that they would not be comfortable to wear on their own (without any under trousers), but I was wrong...
Perfect for walking in changeable conditions without constantly putting them on and off.
A great buy...

Pub Strolls in Shropshire
Pub Strolls in Shropshire

Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars "Strolls"?, well OK... "Walks"?... definitely not.... Good little volume nevertheless, 25 July 2014
This book turned out to be useless to me, as I would not even consider doing a walk of less than 5 miles. Walks are stretched out across Shropshire so that a round trip of 40 miles is often necessary just to do one walk... That's just too much time and fuel wasted for what is often less than an hour of largely flat walking.
These walks range from just 1.5 miles to (rarely) 3.5 miles.
Of course I missed the obvious clue in the title; "Pub STROLLS", although to me, a "stroll" would be at least 5 miles (accepting that to most, a stroll would probably constitute much less).
There are 30 "strolls" in this book. Draw a line vertically through a map of Shropshire and the greater number are to be found on the left (Western side)... That means that if you should live anywhere near Shrewsbury, are looking for easy walks of a short length with a good pub at the end, then this is a quite excellent little publication. Being a prolific Shropshire walker I know many of the paths shown in this book, and know that they have not been picked at random and that the author has included some lovely routes...
One warning.... Many pubs (such as the beautiful Red Lion at Myddle featured in the book) have sadly now shut due to the recession... The book was written with good intentions over a decade ago, so please do a net search & try to contact the pub first if wishing to incorporate that into your "stroll".
4 stars awarded as I recognise this books value to others...

PS: Why do walk books never offer an idea of walk lengths in the Amazon product description? This makes buying a walk book a gamble.

This review is from: Met Office Weather (App)
Why get a weather app from anywhere else? The met office is where all uk weather providers get their info from too.
It is also extremely easy to use and totally seamless. Several locations can be simultaneously programmed into the app too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very short walks?, 15 July 2014
I could find out nothing about this book prior to purchase as concerns walk lengths (I like 8 to 15 mile walks), and so I was disappointed to find that these walks are between 2 and 5 miles on average only....
Im giving it 4 stars anyhow, as this kind of walk length will suit many (especially with younger children) although I do wish Amazon book descriptions would at least give an idea of how long walks are (they rarely seem to do this and it seems to me to be the most important factor).
I did string 3 of the walks together in one day, and they were all lovely...
So if you like short walks and are visiting Cornwall, then this is definitely a must buy for you...

1.0 out of 5 stars I consider a price of £5 to be pretty surprising really, 15 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Considering how thin this pamphlet is (it cannot surely be described as a book), I consider a price of £5 to be pretty surprising really.
The area itself is largely woodland with some unusual rock formations and a little mining history.... That (and a few decent walk routes, all available on the internet for free) is all you need in preparation. The area also promotes itself with the usual "magical/legendary" gumph (every unusal rock formation seems to have a tale attached to it).
Quite a pretty area, but Brittany has many other woodlands of similar or greater beauty (and all without tripping over a thousand other tourists).
This "book" (I expected a book at the price paid) I found contained nothing more than can be easily and freely found out from either the internet or local tourist office.
Thats my opinion (im just being honest) although many might find it worthwhile.

100 Walks in Devon and Cornwall
100 Walks in Devon and Cornwall
by Richard Sale
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Ive given 4 stars simply because of the ease with which the maps can be interpreted and copied as a satnav route AND for the she, 15 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Not fantastically detailed walks, and the maps are basic. I simply transposed the walks onto my satnav and did them from there rather than follow the book.
Ive given 4 stars simply because of the ease with which the maps can be interpreted and copied as a satnav route AND for the sheer number of walks to do in this little volume (making it fantastic value). The text does appear well ordered, so I wouldnt anticipate that walkers would have issues following the walks using the book alone (although fantastic for satnav users).
Despite covering 2 counties and a massive area, it does provide quite a lot of walks within hitting distance wherever you might be based in Cornwall or Devon.

A View from Trencrom: Round Walks Near Hayle, St.Ives and Penzance (Landfall Walks Books)
A View from Trencrom: Round Walks Near Hayle, St.Ives and Penzance (Landfall Walks Books)
by Bob Acton
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful walks assembled enthusiastically., 15 July 2014
I did 5 of these walks as I was staying in the area. I have to admit that I simply downloaded the map routes onto my Garmin Satnav (with some walk books ive tried this with it can be quite hard to interpret the author's maps, but these were easy to transpose), and did not use the book to guide me through the walks as I had limited time. I had read much of the text beforehand, though, and the author has worked hard to give a quite detailed commentary on sights as you walk.
All I can say is that the book contains some very beautiful but little known routes within an area absolutely stuffed with interest. One of my better walking book purchases.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth trying..., 15 July 2014

Makes a right racket as it furiously bubbles and expands in the pipe, but does seem to work pretty well without detriment to your plumbing....
Costs so little it really has to be worth trying before getting the plumber in or getting under the sink...

Apley Hall: The Golden Years of a Sporting Estate
Apley Hall: The Golden Years of a Sporting Estate
by Norman Sharpe
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars My father loved it more than me, 15 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very interesting book documenting life on the Apley estate near Bridgnorth onwards from the beginning of the 20th century. Both my father and myself had childhoods in the area (my father went to Bridgnorth Grammar School and remembers Norman Sharpe as he won the Sharpe Prize once (a prize dedicated to the author). He also well remembers the gamekeeper murdered by poachers mentioned in the book.
My father loved it more than me, as it more reflected his childhood time, whereas I hoped to hear more of Bridgnorth.
The uninitiated might find the long descriptions of hunt preparations and game methods a little dry, but this cannot be held to the books detriment (as the book is clearly described as having such content)...
A remarkable and enjoyable history nonetheless.
