Zippy Letter Opener and Safety Cutter
Zippy Letter Opener and Safety Cutter

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favourite Letter Opener, 3 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the opener I always reach for when I am opening standard paper business envelopes. It is easy to hold (although an ergonomically-designed grip would have been welcome), quick to insert under the envelope flap, and provides a clean cut with minimum force - no sawing needed - no snagging or rucking and no shreddings or dust. My only regret is that it just will not open polythene wrappers and envelopes - it clogs instantly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cheap but Annoying, 3 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very good price, and it does work, but it is not much fun to use. The metal pressings for the claws need to be of a heavier gauge material to ensure longevity and to provide accuracy and stability in use. The tips of the claws would benefit from more accurate forming during manufacture, and better registration to ensure clean insertion under the staples. Annoyingly, the lock is often prone to engage itself during normal use, making operation impossible. The plastic grips are the most stylish I have ever seen in a stapler (one of the reasons that I chose to buy it) but the smooth, convex shape makes satisfactory gripping almost impossible - your finger and thumb either slide towards the rear, where there is insufficient purchase for operation, or they slide forwards over the front and block access to the work surface. A brave attempt, but back to the drawing board!

I could easily have paid more than 10 times the cost of this battery (including delivery!) if I had had it fitted at a High Street jeweller. And they may not have used such a high quality cell.

It was so easy to fit that this is what I will always do in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Saves Time, Expense and Damage, 11 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
To have a new watch battery fitted at jewellers in the Southampton area costs from £8 to £12. This watch case opener cost £2.08, delivered, and a high quality battery was ordered seperately online for a further £0.76 delivered.

It was so easy to save £5.16 this time, and perhaps another £7.24 in 3 or 4 years time. And it avoided some work-experience shop assistant scratching the watch case again with their nail file while grinding the crystal into the gritty counter.

The tool was sent direct from China, and took nearly all of the indicated 3 week delivery time.

This is not a precision instrument. All aspects of machining and assembly are crude. The hammer finish paint is already flaking off. (looks like it was applied as a single coat over a surface that had not been degreased).

But what do you expect for the price! It works perfectly, and I wish that I had bought one years ago.

CHECK - make sure that your watch has at least two diametrically-opposite slots at the periphery of the screw back disc before ordering this item.

5.0 out of 5 stars How do they do all this for the money?, 12 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The helicopter arrived courtesy of China Post 9 days after placing the order. For its epic journey it was securely packed in a custom-designed expanded polystyrene case, in contrast to the attractive card display box with window that contained my first example, purchased from an independant dealer in the UK.

Being so well protected, it arrived in perfect condition and flew "straight out of the box".

I never cease to be amazed at the level of sophistication and performance that has been achieved with this machine when you consider the very reasonable price.

My only concern is the instruction manual, which is in Chinese with a very dodgy English translation. If you try to follow these instructions, you will never get the thing to move at all, let alone fly. Better to look at the many tutorials online, particularly on YouTube.

That said, the recommendation to engage the help of an experienced helicopter flyer at first, and to build you flying skills gradually in a suggested order of exercises, should avoid considerable grief and the early retrieval of crash debris if this is your first helicopter.

First flights should be outdoors in dead calm conditions in as large a flat space as you can find. Flying from the centre of a football pitch is ideal, especially if the goalposts are not present. This helicopter is fast and sensitive and there is the danger that the complete beginner will over-control or quickly fly it out of sight. Any attempt to fly it indoors will have it bouncing off the walls or ceiling in no time. But soon you will master the controls and be confident it in flying in smaller spaces and in stronger winds.

Crashes will happen from time to time, and this machine rugged enough to survive many of them unscathed. If the worst comes to the worst, spares are readily available.

I am so pleased that I bought mine. It has given me hours of satisfaction and enjoyment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better performance than original Sony battery, 10 Jan. 2013

SUMMARY - great product - great value - works out of the box - BUT should be shipped with charging instructions.

Battery arrived next day, well packed and in pristine condition, but with no documentation or instructions. I fitted it to my Sony Vaio VGN-AR51M laptop and switched on the charger. After 1hour, full charge was indicated by the extinguishing of the charge light, but I gave it 4 hours "to be sure". However, I was later sent an e-mail by Shinntto's agents that said that I should charge it for 24 hours, then fully disharge it, repeating this cycle twice more to condition the battery. After two days of inadvertant normal use, I will now do this in the hope of retrieving the situation. Despite this, the Shinntto battery (4400mAh)is already outperforming the original Sony battery(4800mAh) when that was new, giving approximately 30% more run time under similar operating conditions.

Artemis Fowl
Artemis Fowl

4.0 out of 5 stars An engaging tale, but morally and technically flawed., 21 April 2002
This review is from: Artemis Fowl (Paperback)
Artemis Fowl may not be the next Harry Potter, but represents an engaging and original addition to the heroes of children's fiction. The narrative is wide-ranging, action-packed and imaginative, written in an easy style which encourages prolonged reading sessions.
There is just the right amount of gratuitous violence and crudity to satisfy the discerning child-monster, although a complete chapter devoted to bums, bum-flaps and gargantuan projectile flatulence may appear somewhat excessive.
Rather more worrying is the use of Semtex explosive to destroy a Japanese whaler, killing its crew in the process, followed by gloating and an attempted justification on animal welfare grounds.
But the major failing of this book is in its technological illiteracy. Artemis Fowl makes extensive use of information technology and advanced vision systems, whilst his opponents excel in the use of remote tracking systems, vision-cloaking, time-stopping devices, and nuclear weaponry. It is apparent that the author has little idea of the principles underlying any of these concepts, however, as he seeks effect by employing words like "radioactive green, DAT projector, neutrino, lithium batteries, and radioactive half-life" but unfortunately in the most absurd of contexts. As a glaring example of this, much of the action of the book occurs in Artemis Fowl's manor house and grounds, after his opponents have applied a complete time-stop there. But, by definition, action is made up of sequential events, and this can only occur during the passage of time. Another howler involves the calculation (wrongly, as it happens) of the radiation level, of the area in which a nuclear device has been detonated, from the half-life of the original weapon fuel, and not the half-life of the fission products. Furthermore, the choice of the neutrino as the projectile for a hand-held gun is rather suspect. Since this particle has no electrical charge and a vanishingly small mass, it would be impossible to fire, and would have no noticeable effect on a human target. (We are all irradiated naturally with billions of neutrinos every second).
Whether by accident or design, the author seems to get far too much completely wrong. Even the expression "no brainer" is used in a sense diametrically opposite to normal.
There is a danger that an impressionable reader may absorb some of this erroneous information, and that this may prove a handicap to their future scientific development.
