5.0 out of 5 stars TOTALLY WORTH THE WAIT...., 24 Jun. 2017
This review is from: D.E.G. (Audio CD)
As soon as the sweeping, grandiose descending chord kicks in about two minutes into the opening track FHORTH, you know BOLA is truly back in business. This is his first album for about a decade, and what a fabulous return it is. Closer in sound design, I would say, to his earlier releases (SOUP + FYUTI) all the trademark brilliance of rhythm, melody and intricacy is in full flower. HERZZATZZ and LANDOR 50X2 are also particular highlights, and whilst a couple of tracks don't quite do it for me, I'm still giving this 5 stars as the rest is so good. I've always considered BOLA to be possibly the most under-rated and under-appreciated musician in the whole scene. Maybe D.E.G. will finally see him garner the recognition he so deserves for some of the finest and most unique electronica around. Nobody else has ever sounded like him, and they still don't.

5.0 out of 5 stars TEN OUT OF TEN FOR THE 9TH, 16 Oct. 2016
This review is from: The 9th Of Nine Hearts (Audio CD)
Toby Marks' consistency is really something to behold and cherish. So many other acts from the 'Ambient Dub' and Planet Dog era have long since given up the ghost, but 25 years on BANCO have not just survived, but flourished, and this latest effort must rank among his three best ever albums. All the trademark sound designs and orchestrations abound, whilst recent and long-time collaborators James Eller (bass) and Ted Duggan (drums) add a muscular and expansive tonality, as well as comprising a fabulous new 3-piece live show line-up, complemented by superb visuals from Patrick Dunn. Vocalist Tim Bowness adds his mournful magic to the opener NINE HEARTS. BURN THE WITCH, with its clever time signature and flat-out grandeur, is a particular highlight, but Marks can still melt your heart with the achingly sad yet beautiful AND SO WE DREAM OF FUTURES LOST. Fun though it is, the track 91 - a four-to-the-floor techno throwback - seems almost out of place on an album this contemporary and diverse. A fitting tribute to his roots perhaps, but maybe also a farewell? If BANCO DE GAIA are dead, then long live BANCO DE GAIA. I'm already looking forward to the next one.....

4.0 out of 5 stars 'MALCY' DOES SURPRISE..., 30 May 2016
This review is from: Summer Of '13 (Audio CD)
I've loved 'Malcy' since his days with ARAB STRAP and his first solo release. He's been so consistently brilliant that it's sort of a civic duty to buy everything he does.

And SUMMER OF 13 is ...well...I'm not sure what it is..!!.....Malcy does dance? Sort of? And sounds positive at times? I think?

On first listen, my initial reaction was....."...uh....oh...okay...."....but subsequently this album has really, really grown on me.

There's not much I can think of that this compares to - which is one of the things that has always made him so good - but anyone expecting his trademark anthemic-miserablist-big-band sound as found on INTO THE WOODS or A BRIGHTER BEAT are in for a surprise.

Highlights for me are the beautiful, uplifting and wonderfully bonkers MUSIC TICKS, which is the sort of thing you can imagine Busby Berkely wanting to choreograph whilst dropping acid with THE FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON. And BIG BLACK HOLE, with its nuts acoustic outro, where he's clearly taking the piss out of himself with tremendous good humour.

Try to find the double CD edition of this, as the bonus disc has his more familiar stripped-down acoustic versions of many tracks, plus several exclusive songs that are worth the price all on their own.

I give it four stars, as sadly there isn't included here one of his absolutely killer, heartbreakers like LOVE COMES IN WAVES, or any hilarious self-flagellations like TOTAL BELIEF and CRAPPO THE CLOWN.

Nonetheless, this is a very welcome addition to his canon, and whilst it's now nigh on impossible to know where he's going next, I'm going there with him.

4.0 out of 5 stars GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT, 25 May 2016

I never thought this day would come.

To quote Bill Hicks: "Who woulda thunk it?!"

After 23 years, one of Tangerine Dream's seminal members returns to the fold with a very fine effort.

Whilst perhaps it lacks some of the variety, scope and melodic beauty of his prior solo releases ROMANCE '76 and TRANS HARMONIC NIGHTS - both of which are highly recommended - this is an enormously welcome return from a treasured and respected artist, and a deserving addition to the huge, and now almost mythic, TD family of releases.

Darker tones pervade here, but Baumann's classic sound design, clever bass lines and minimalism are out in force, and there's a couple of his really good sequencer + lead-line combo tracks that hark back to his finest days.

Apparently more is on the way.

Nice!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Genius in TD, 20 April 2016
This review is from: Wuivend Riet (Audio CD)
As beautiful and engaging as the year it was released, it's a very rare album that stands the test of time, and we're talking 30 years now.

From the sublime piano based opener MATJORA IS STILL ALIVE, to the fascinating yet faintly disturbing WUIVEND RIET Pt.2, Schmoelling's sound design, sequencers and melodies reveal the genius that made him such an integral member of Tangerine Dream in the 1980's.

But it's ZEIT that garners the full honours. Not just one of the greatest pieces of electronic music ever made, it ranks amongst my absolute favourite pieces of music ever. Gigantic, sweeping, brilliant chord progressions, in an enormous mix, I struggle to do it justice with words.

It still makes my hair stand on end, and I can not recommend it highly enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars BURSTING WITH NEW ELECTRONIC LIFE, 21 Dec. 2015
This review is from: Quantum Key (Audio CD)
The post-Edgar Froese years bode extremely well with this first TD release from the current Thorsten Quaeschning + Ulrich Schnauss line up. Guest musician Hoshiko Yamane adds powerful violin to several tracks, of which forthcoming album track GENESIS OF PRECIOUS THOUGHTS, and this ep-stand-alone track ELECTRON BONFIRE, are particular highlights. Excellent sound design, beautiful melodies and sequencers somewhat reminiscent of ENCORE pervade, making this a great bridge between old and new. I'm sticking with TD despite the loss of their founder and pioneer. For my money this is the best 'Cup Disc' ep they've ever put out.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMONGST STEVEN WILSON'S FINEST EVER, 26 Aug. 2015
This review is from: Ghosts on Magnetic Tape (Audio CD)
As a 20 yr fan of his music in all his guises, GOMT is without question one of Wilson's masterworks, and don't just take my word for it. He himself considers it amongst his best ever albums.

Sublimely creepy yet incredibly beautiful, spectral and other worldly, it rewards you in new ways every time you play it. With superb sound design - derived almost entirely from processed recordings - its layers and atmospheres haunt and swirl around you to produce one of the greatest ambient albums ever made. Easily on a par with, and indeed better, imo, than Biosphere's SUBSTRATA, Eno's APOLLO and the rhythm-less sections of Tangerine Dream's PHAEDRA and RUBYCON.

Whilst so much attention is given, rightfully so, to Wilson's rock excursions - both solo and with Porcupine Tree - I've always considered that some of his greatest works have been contained within his Bass Communion output.

GOMT confirms my feeling absolutely, and is one of my desert island discs.
