5.0 out of 5 stars Inbal - do many people realise just good his performances are or indeed have heard of him?, 8 May 2016

An excellent set of performances from a surprisingly neglected conductor. His Bruckner and Berlioz are equally convincing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maestro Monteux in top form., 8 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Gramophone review was mixed but I have always loved Monteux‘s performances and he doesn‘t fail here. It is so good to have a such a wonderful set of performances from this maestro. Rob Cowen‘s excellent notes are are a very helpful and informative added bonus.

A superb release. Don‘t worry that it is in mono sound. It is vivid and involving both in sound and outstanding performance.

A horrible film. and should not be readily available. Well made but with very offensive content. Do not want it in the house and so have sent it back to the supplier.

2.0 out of 5 stars OK if they will load up on your player., 14 May 2015

Potential purchasers should be aware that there are technical issues with this set. I recently purchased two sets from two suppliers and both have been returned for refunds. I have a collection of over 2,000 CDs and all of them play without problems, including several PDO manufacterd discs with severe bronzing. A number of discs in this Phase 4 set present problems with loading. I have tried them on a high quality Sony player, a Linn Genki and an Onkyo player with very poor results. For the most part, they do play OK on my Sony SACD/CD payer. Whatever the merits of the recordings and performaces, many of which I like, I am forgoing owning the set as I do not wish to be bothered by the set‘s technical shortcomings.

3.0 out of 5 stars There are better versions., 20 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is probably my least favourite Shostakovich symphony and it is really a song cycle purporting to be a symphony. The bass singer however is excellent and truly authentic sounding. The soprano, a last minute substitute apparently, becomes very shrill in places and would be more suited to operatic roles. Petrenko is reliable as ever but is overshadowed by previous exponents of this difficult work - the likes of Bernstein, Barshai and Rostropovich. The performance is not gripping enough to compensate for the short measure this disc provides. Surely some appropriate makeweights could have been added.
Perhaps I am too enamoured of the song cycle of Mahler (Das Lied) that is really a symphony - magical and stimulating in a way this Shostakovich to me simply is not.
Now let's hear Petrenko in the 13th - Babi Yar - now that really is more to my liking.
He will have trouble however living up to the drama and pathos both Barshai and Kondrashin found in the 13th. I will doff my cap to him if he succeeds.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real delight., 11 Mar. 2014
Do not take too much notice of pontification regarding the rghts or wrongs of these interpretations. Suffice it to say that this set is an absolute delight from start to finish and worth every penny of a very modest outlay. Thoroughly recommended.

A wonderful memento of a truly committed Brucknerian and the added bonus CD of his absorbing talk on Bruckner and the symphonies with piano illustrations. What more could you want. Come on Amazon - get the description right.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not the real deal., 11 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Casella - Piano Works (Audio CD)
Be careful if you are considering this CD. It is not the original Naxos pressing but an Amazon copy. There are no notes (Naxos notes on the music and performers are usually comprehensive and informative, a pleasure to read), just a track listing. I did not even play the CD but sent it straight back for a refund. This is the first time this has happened to me on Amazon and so I am very disappointed, both as a regular customerand in Amazon as the perpetrater.

5.0 out of 5 stars So much better than the recent Petrenko 7th, 8 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I approached this latest in Petrenko's Shostakovich cycle with some trepidation as I was less than enthusiastic over his version of the 7th, especially the lack of vigour and sheer intensity as displayed by the likes of Ancerl and Bernstein and the challenging dynamic range of the recording. Much to my relief, things here are much improved. The performance is exciting and the dynamic range much easier to enjoy - albeit with a somewhat backward percussion section where it needs to be heard at the end of the second movement. I would not entirely agree with the Gramophone (Edward Seckerson) that it is a strong contender for 'the best in catalogue' unless he is referring to the Naxos catalogue alone. In the broader context of the Shostakovich catalogue, my view is that it is a strong contender to be 'one of the best'.
