5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas in a nutshell!!, 30 Jan. 2009
I really liked this album. It has all the warmth of Christmas in one nostalgic festive package. To some it might seem a little dated but herein lies most of it's charm. The orchestrations are wonderful and use of backing choir add to it's charm. Of course there are winter songs along with Christmas favourites with the outstanding MOONLIGHT IN VERMONT and I LIKE THE WINTER WEATHER and I could go on. Jo Stafford's voice is warm and sumptuous. Paul Weston's backings super! You can put this album on in November and still be playing it in March.Great Stuff! This album is now available in a different format. Search Jo Stafford on Amazon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dean Martin swinging., 30 Jan. 2009
This review is from: Amore (Audio CD)
There is nothing wrong with this album as it contains Dean in swinging mood with most tracks orchestrated by Nelson Riddle. Top quality tracks with clean crisp sound. But...but but but....if you're a Dean Martin fan you will proberbly already have most of these tracks as they have been available on Capitol re- hashes before. This was mainly when he was at his best and if you like the sound of Dean Martin's voice especially in swinging mood then this is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Easy Listening Masterpiece!!, 22 Nov. 2008
I can never understand why people are not particularly fond of Como albums judging from the response to Amazon reviews, etc. this is an excellant double album CD that rates along any middle of the road albums on the market.

Como's voice is superb on every track. One lightly latin and most relaxing in every way. The other, slightly country and western with clear concise imaginative musical backings. He is as superb as Dean Martin and his singing is clean and concise.

This is excellant in every way and providing you appreciate a good crooner ...Buy it!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Bacharach and David sound in a great Musical, 7 Oct. 2008
This review is from: Promises, Promises (Audio CD)
If you collect and enjoy Musicals this one should be in your collection. A bright modern sound with brisk catchy melodies and the great voice of Jerry Orbach (He of " Law and Order" Lieutenant Briscoe). Bacharach and David have weaved their beguiling rhythyms and melodies around this Musical version of the film " The Apartment" with all the dexterity of accomplished musicians who have written musicals before. This was their first and ran for over three years on Broadway and two years in the West End.
It has the big hits "I'll never fall in love again" and "Knowing when to leave" and was the first musical to have orchestra pit singers colouring the performances of the principle singers. A thoroughly enjoyable listen!

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't see the film. Buy the record!!!, 26 Aug. 2008
If you must see the film see the Ronald Coleman film from the forties in black and white. It's much better. This CD however is interesting as it is the only Bacharach/David film musical they did. Individually the songs stand out as good Bacharach/David tracks, but visually on film the songs seem almost embarrassing. Fortunately when you are just listening to the musical everything is fine and there is some good stuff here and for all musical buffs it stands above a lot of stage musicals of it's time.

4.0 out of 5 stars See the show first, 20 Aug. 2008
You have to see this show to fully appreciate the score on this CD. Because Boubil and Schonberg have written this with Michel Legrand, memories of Legrand's wonderful music and LES MIS come immeadiately to mind. Unfortunately the CD needs repeated playings until you begin to enjoy the music. For quick joy the ballad "Dreams, shining dreams" and " Time was when" are excellant and there is some dialogue and evocative sound between tracks giving the French resistance in Paris feel that helps in understanding the piece. Ruthie Henshall is wonderful but I did feel there should be more excellant Boubil and Shonberg Ballads to stick in my mind. Go see the show, then you'll want the album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff, 6 Aug. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: How the West was won (Audio CD)
This album has been deleted for thirty years and it is only the revival of quality singers that it is now available. Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney are at the top of their singing careers, not to mention the first rate renditions of other country and Western stars of the fifties. The quality of the recording is first rate and although it is slightly expensive due ,I think, to importing the CD from America, there is much to admire with over forty tracks. It covers songs from the early days of the West with commentary from Crosby and the music is commercially recorded giving a brightness and clarity to listeners. If you're a fan of Crosby and Clooney at their best this is a must!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best two albums on Capitol, 23 Jun. 2008
This review is from: Dean Martin (Audio CD)
To get two complete albums of Dean martin on one CD is good. To get proberbly the best two albums he recorded is gold star indeed. His voice is excellant. The backings are superb. The choice of songs is exemplary. These two albums were released in the sixties, one italian love songs, the other lightly latin. I find it difficult to fault such excellance and therfore fully recommend you purchase this immeadiatly!

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspired by other shows, 3 April 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Obviously inspired by MAMMA MIA and HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL this is quite a catchy poppy musical. On the stage I'm sure it works really well especially with the recent success of HAIRSPRAY. The songs vary from sixties influences to nineties so covering lots of fans and I found it quite fun to listen to despite my reservations. It's no SOUND OF MUSIC but then if you enjoyed the three musicals I have mentioned above this one sits very well in their company. Four stars for a fun recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars Curtains Up!!, 8 Mar. 2008

What a fantastic show! When you can understand the reality of that statement after only hearing the CD you have to realise how good the CD is. You can follow the plot and fully understand what the musical is about when you purchase this show album. Great vocal singing and great individual performances enhance a super witty score. Kander and Ebb, writers of CHICAGO and CABARET are responsible, and they've scored another bullseye show that will surely appear in the West End before long. If you like buying original stage soundtracks this hails worthy of the best of them.
