3.0 out of 5 stars Well written, tries to answer the question of how we would try to survive an apocalypse, but drags on!, 22 July 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Seveneves (Kindle Edition)
*This review contains spoilers* I read this book on Bill Gates' recommendation, and as far as apocalyptic sci-fi goes it's a bit more high brow than the competition, however it falls short in several areas. One annoying tendency is for the author to write very little as key events happen, such as the death of 7 billion odd people on Earth and the death of almost everyone onboard the ark, but then to describe in endless minutiae the fine detail of the orbital mechanics of a component of a space station. What grates the most about this style is that it makes the reader less willing to suspend their disbelief when it comes to simple matters such as how the hell the human race got down to just seven eves (geddit?) then magically after 5000 years numbers in the millions again and seems to be omnipotent when it comes to building orbital space stations.... but yet their computers are less powerful than the ones we have today? Yeah, right. As I have written for a couple of other books now, I can see this being turned into a TV series by SyFy then cancelled after the first series or two. Probably worth a read if you are really into this type of storyline (i.e. longterm survival in space) but don't expect any answers to be given in any degree of detail.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review follows 18 months of use: the Roomba is definitely more than a novelty, 23 Dec. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I decided to wait 18 months before reviewing my Roomba, as it's easy to fall into the trap of writing a review immediately after purchase and not noticing any shortcomings, so here goes..... It's very good, we use it throughout our house on a mixture of carpets and wooden floors. We find it adequately replaces our former manual vacuum cleaner except for heavily soiled mats in our 3 bedroom house with two adults and a cat. Obviously you need to tidy away cables and light objects prior to switching the Roomba on otherwise they get eaten. Embarrassingly, when we first used it in our bedroom, it completely filled its dust hopper twice. To get the most out of the Roomba, you should use it several times per week, it follows the 'little but often' rule.

Pros: Good cleaning ability and we do find it's pretty thorough, given its size
Doesn't get stuck very often, and when it does, we learn to remove the obstacles in advance
Vacuums under the bed and other low slung furniture
Definitely more than a novelty
Quick charging with good battery life, even after 18 months of regular use
Cat safe (and good for dealing with their hairs)
Simple to operate

Cons: Quite expensive for what it is
Quite loud - solved by turning on when leaving the house
The charging base is a little bit light
No timer functionality with this model

5.0 out of 5 stars What I particularly like about these is that the bits have slightly longer ..., 5 July 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought these to help me drill holes in an old plastic bin to convert it to a water butt and they did the job perfectly. What I particularly like about these is that the bits have slightly longer tips at their maximum radius which means they cut in ahead of the main body of the bit and prevent the drill from snatching in your hand. In other words: they cut into the plastic more smoothly than ordinary flat bits. They came in a good, practical box too.

3.0 out of 5 stars Read this if installing into a thick wall, 29 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have written this review for those of you fitting a cat flap into a modern, solid foam filled wall (Celotex, Kingspan etc). This type of wall will be at least 150mm thick, meaning that once you fit the product to the wall, the elements are able to get in from the outside as the tunnel is far too short (~60mm) and there is only one flap, which is fitted to the inside surface of the wall. In order to protect your wall, make it look more attractive from outside, and improve heat retention, you will need to buy 2 of these flaps, fit one to the inside of the wall and the other to the outside. To further waterproof the system I cut through the insulating foam with a slight downward angle (to encourage water to run outwards) and lined the void with DPM. Since the cat flap is not designed to be fitted this way, you won't be able to screw the screws into their intended spots, but I found it relatively easy to overcome this by screwing into the plywood and using glue to fix the front fascia. If you are intending to copy my solution, the wall has to be thick enough so that the two doors don't touch each other as they are opened - otherwise your cat may have difficulty. Please refer to my photos for further information (note the green sided wall is the outside face of the wall).

As for the actual cat flap, this works fine, but I removed the magnetic strip for the first few days to make it easier for Coco (our cat) to push open. Also, there is an incredibly annoying sticker on the front face of the flap which is impossible to remove without damaging the plastic (see photos), despite being soaked in water for an hour. Quite why companies insist on using this type of sticker is beyond me!

UPDATE 27/07/15 - Our cat has figured out how to turn the dial herself and let herself out whenever she likes! Bow to your feline masters!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superior to the CPR Call Blocker, 9 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
My parents have a CPR Call Blocker which is pretty good, but they still get 'out of area' and '0' calls passing through, the Call Saint blocks these too. After an initial training period when you push the red button each time one of these timewasters calls you, I have had nothing but peace and tranquility. Only genuine calls get through, when before I used to be bombarded with around 6 sales calls per day.

1.0 out of 5 stars Genuine review., 9 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is a complete waste of money even at 1.99. It's padded out with general travel guff such as when the shops open and what currency they use in Italy. I 'read' it from cover to cover in less than 20 minutes, and learned nothing of merit about Florence. I would have found more information about this beautiful city from reading its Wikipedia entry. Anyone who's rated this 5 stars is clearly on the pay roll. Avoid.
