One of Riordan's Best, 9 Oct. 2011
Having pre ordered this months, ago I completely forgot about it and so was pleasantly surprised when it arrived in the post.
This is undoubtedly one of Rick Riordan's best Percy Jackson adventures. I enjoyed The Lost Hero but absolutely loved The Son of Neptune. The Roman aspects of the world, more fully explored in this novel, are amazing to read about and highly entertaining in comparisons to the Greek myths in the other stories. I loved how Percy has grown as a character in this novel, keeping the charm and likeability form the first series but becoming more mature and aware of others. The new companion characters, Hazel and Frank, i also adored along with the return of some old friends that only help the story achieve new heights.
Riordan is very gifted in character building as none of the books cast is simple or plain, each faces their own challenges and have individual, complex personalities but also work surprisingly well as a team. You never feel that the characters are on separate journeys or have only been roped together by a simple quest. They are determined to fight, survive and succeed together and only deal with their own fates when the time permits.
I can't emphasise enough how good a book this is and it has put Riordan up in the list of my favourite authors. An amazing book, expertly written and I cannot wait for the third instalment to the series.
