Gripping, fascinating and compelling. Could not put it down. Can't wait to read the next in the series. Loved it.

But still a good read. A little heavy on long drawn out fight scenes and i found myself skim reading a lot in the last third of the book.

Another night with too little sleep thanks to Mr Landy. As usual, a gripping, exciting, unputdownable story. I love these characters and the plot is most definitely thickening. Next one!

Just could not put this down. I read the whole thing cover to cover in a night. The best so far. Now i can't decide whether to get some well needed sleep or go straight into the next one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just an episode of castle really, 22 Dec. 2014

Not sure why this book was written apart from the obvious monetary advantages. It reads like a roughly converted screenplay with characters jumping from one location to another in the space of a sentence. The plot would make a good tv episode but is missing something as a book. There is little character development and because of that i automatically pictured the television characters instead of being able to imagine new ones, but why bother? They are almost exactly the same. Won't bother buying another but might just go catch up on the show. Overall it is a more entertaining way to spend an hour or two.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good but flawed book, 27 Nov. 2014

I enjoyed the story but found a lot of the characters predictable and cliched. The glory grabbing female bitchy boss, the female copper torn between family and work, the abused serial killer. I have seen all these types in detective novels and tv shows so often that they become tiresome. Just once I'd like to see a woman in power who wasn't a two faced, power hungry back stabber. Or a female police officer who had family and career without having to choose between the two. Otherwise this is a well written, engaging story.

Excellent final chapter of The Bartimaeus Sequence. Loads of action, lots of wit from my favourite djinni and a sad but happy ending. Trying not to give away any spoilers.... Great story, I really enjoyed it.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good read but not as good as the first, 30 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I enjoyed this book but it did take a while to get going. When I read the first in the trilogy, The Amulet of Samarkand, it took me less than a day to finish. This one was not quite so addictive and this is due, in no small part, to the character of Nathaniel. As annoying as he was in book one, that could be excused by his youth and circumstances. In this next instalment, he is positively repugnant. Bartimaeus is as funny and engaging as ever but we don't see enough of him. Nathaniel is a foolish, arrogant toe rag and it is difficult to wish him success. I couldn't really get lost in the story until I had read over 50% of the book. Once past that point though I was once again hooked.
