The Nine Questions
The Nine Questions
by Edward Fenton
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic for children of all ages, 9 May 2017
This review is from: The Nine Questions (Hardcover)
The atmosphere created in the book is magical. I read it when I was 10 (61 now) and I still remember it well. It frightened me and fascinated me in equal measure. Like many others I do not know why it was not reprinted; it certainly deserves to be.

1.0 out of 5 stars Factually inaccurate book, 30 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I stopped reading this book after the second chapter. Within those first few pages there were three errors. The first words in the book, Capt Smith's quote, was incorrect. Next Thomas Andrews was Irish, not Scottish as stated by the author. Thirdly there were 15 watertight bulkheads, not 16 as stated in the book. The 15 bulkheads created 16 watertight compartments, which however were open at the top. With such a frequency of errors I did not feel it was worthwhile reading on. Very disappointing.

A real page turner. An interesting tale. Not your average whodunit. An ideal read for a four hour train journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars First hand account, 19 Jun. 2013

Interesting to get a first hand account of the sinking and it's aftermath. The breaking in two (or not) of the ship is dealt with and the conclusion was that it did not break up. There are also two reports of people swimming in the water for 20 minutes and surviving. Fascinating.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ultimately unsatisfying, 22 April 2013

This review is from: The Dinner (Kindle Edition)
Great book to read. Didn't know where it was going. However at the end there was too much brushed over like the wife's illness and his breakdown. It was ultimately disappointing. I wasn't sure what the author intended but while I sympathised with the father at the beginning it was clear by the end of the book that he was an unpleasant and violent man. I also didn't think that the ultimate solution was realistic.

Better than I remembered. I am totally addicted to it. Obviously the inspiration for the office but so much better. Larry and Hank are good at their jobs and it away from that we get the personality problems which generate so much of the comedy. In The Office I always wondered how David Brent got to run an office and particularly how he got to run the merged office after the rationalising process - he was hopeless. (I know I should have better things to think about). The characters, the acting, the scripts are all so good I don't think anything be better has been done on TV. It is also realistic - there are no completely crazy situations needed to generate the comedy. If you haven't got it - get it.

Titanic Scandal: The Trial of the Mount Temple
Titanic Scandal: The Trial of the Mount Temple

3.0 out of 5 stars Not convinced, 30 Jan. 2010
This is a very thought provoking book but I wish Mr Molony had provided charts of the various positions of the different ships involved as I found the text difficult to follow. I was not convinced by his argument as no ship (including Titanic) seemed to know exactly where they were that fateful night.

For the Titanic enthusiast it is well worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magic music, 30 Jan. 2010
This review is from: The Brendan Voyage (Audio CD)
The synthesis between the orchestra and the uilleann pipes is beautiful. Pipe music by itself in magical but the orchestra does act as a melodious counterpoint to the pipe music.

This is a real secret gem. Get it.
