I learnt an awful lot about this great artist, especially interested in his lifelong friendship with Zola.. Wonderfully illustrated unlike so many biographies of artists nowadays.

I had high hopes when I began, but they were swiftly dashed
and I had to skip(wonderfully easy on Kindle) to get to the end.

The central problem is that the husband and wife who dominate the story are not only dull, but increasingly irritating. Hard to fathom how such a superb writer as Kate Atkinson could have liked it so much. Only good thing is that I haven't a printed copy to dispose of.

The title doesn't do justice to this immensely funny satire on the present day art world. The author clearly knows what he is talking about: hyped-up artists with little or no talent, dealers with no scruples ,collectors with more money than sense. He also writes very well ,and it had me laughing out loud at times. It is not quite so funny when you realise the world he satirises so well is a terrifying reflection of the real thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great ensemble, 18 Jan. 2013

It is rare for a book by two people to be so very well written, and even rarer when they are both academics. Totally free of jargon; consistently stimuating making me long to see operas I have missed or avoided, and to see again old favourites.
Asne it is wondderfully witty. A great treat with which to to start the new year.

1.0 out of 5 stars disappointing, 17 April 2012

I have, in the past , just about always enjoyed any Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine novel with the exception of those too cosy Wexfords. This one, however, was a bitter disappointment. I felt she had not enjoyed writing it anymore than I did reading it. A dull plough.Better things next time ,please, if there is one.

A truly amazing book. I had no particular interest in insects until I started reading it. very well written, very entertaining ,and full of amazing information. Did any of you know that one of the main sports in Shanghai is cricket fighting( and I don't mean test match squabbles).? A rare gem.

Beautifully written account of a not so glorious period of British history; the Opium Wars with China. The British went to war to keep the hugely profitable opium trade with China open whilst the Chinese ,realising the debilitating effect it was having on a vast swathe of their population ,were trying to stop it. The many maps are terrific, and it gave me a much better understanding of the Chinese today.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Steamer, 13 Oct. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the most useful newe kitchen utensil I have had for years.

The perforated silicone folds easily into a smallish or largeish sauce[and little legs prevent wateer seeping through perofrations).
If alone I use small saucepan; I steam potatoes, and then about half way through add a green vegetable. When cooked simply lift out the steamer( it is not hot), empty vegetables on to a plate, into a dish, and rinse the steamer under the tap.
Perfect and I sue it every day.
