Funeral first came out when I was at University and it blew me away. 9 years on, a bit longer in the tooth I was worried that Arcade Fire might not excite me the way they used. From reading other reviews I was concerned it may be a little too experiemental and 90mins of buzzing/bleeping/clicking. In a similar way I lost interest in Radiohead post In Rainbows.

I was wrong to worry, yes this album is inventive and different, but it's not wacky. It still has that fundemental Arcade Fire sound and those hooks which get stuck in your head and you find yourself humming randomly. The hidden track actually is exactly what I worried the album would be like, lots of noise with little structure, and that's the only track I didn't like.

The album is masterful and improves with repeated listening as you pick out more little details, hooks and rythms. This is not a double album either, I find little difference between the styles of the first and second discs and it sounds like a complete album to me.

This is a classic Arcade ablum, a progression but still them at the core. Better than Neon Bible, as good as Suburbs, doesn't top Funeral (though I doubt they could ever do that!)

Highly recommend to all fans, don't worry, it's still them at heart!

3.0 out of 5 stars More of the same..., 13 Nov. 2013

The first two games in this series were probably the most exciting, fun and beautifully crafted games i've had the pleasure to play.
With Rocksteady handing over the reins I had my worries about the direction the game would take. Fortunately WBIE know a good thing when they see at and didn't meddle. But that decision comes with a downside, there is little innovation in this game compared to the previous episodes.

Yes there is a revamped detective mode (which you are mostly a spectator through and takes little skill no matter how much it's dressed up) and some new gadgets, although the super power mittens tip the balance way in your favour and removes the challenge.

I find Gotham is beautifully rendered but a bit unsatisfying as it's unpopulated, like an empty shell. Coming from a couple of months of the living world of GTA V, this was a bit of a downer.

The game is still brilliantly fun to play and you still get that "i'm the dark knight" feeling and thrill. It just doesn't move things along as the previous games did. The voice acting is still second to none and the story remains as strong as ever. It just feels like an add on to Arkham City-2.5 if you will.

Worth playing, was always going to find it hard to live up to parts 1+2. Just get that niggling feeling Rocksteady may have been more adventurous and the product may have been more polished as well.

2.0 out of 5 stars unimaginative, 1 Mar. 2006
This review is from: On The Outside (Audio CD)
Sadly, starsailor are sounding more and more like they have lost their direction.
Their more "upbeat" sound, has drowned out the passion they used to put in their songs, for less imaginative, uninspiring, simple electric guitar chord lead songs.
Starsailor never used to be completely quiet, Love is here had uplifting moments during those songs that were down (alcoholic, way to fall etc), and those moments were magnificent.
They have completely cut piano from nearly all their songs and those with it in, there is much less emphesis and its drowned out. I found that so disapointing, as the piano in their songs used to be quite a nice defining feature of their music.
For fans of Love is Here, you will be completely under awed by this album, so many of the songs just sound like the one which went before.Nearly all the songs are completely forgettable and lack individuality.
The only reason this album got 2 stars, is because of the song "i dont know". The high point in what is quite a dull album. Its the only song which stands out on its own, with its dirty blues sound and words, it gives you a peek at what starsailor used to be capable of.
Starsailor should go back to what they know.

This review is from: The Magic Numbers (Audio CD)
Been to see Magic numbers twice this year, once when they supported Doves, and then again when they played Fuzz club(sheffield) which is has quite hard crowds to please....but they absolutly won the crowd over and were fantastic...musically beautiful and very competant in everything they do. Catchy songs with impressive harmonies. Melodies you cant forget and instantly make you smile...If there was room to dance to them,im sure a lot of the crowd would of been...didnt stop a lot of people trying..
this band are definatly the band for the summer...brilliant sun kissed BBQ sounds!

5.0 out of 5 stars Most beautiful of 2005?, 4 Mar. 2005
Compared to other Bright Eyes albums, this one is probably the most conventional out of them all! With less speaking and more just pure music (bar the traditional interesting start!..which works very well!!)
This album is stunning the first time you hear it, then just gets better and better the more you listen to it.From full blown country tracks, to sweet acoustic tracks, the album is packed full of strong tunes, with no fillers no be seen! The lyrics as always are dynamic, powerful and at times dramatic and sad: one of the most heart tugging songs being Lua, where Conor tackles depression and eating disorders, in a way i find is very true to life and easy to relate to...
Overall, this album is immense from start to finish, with no weak links. If you already know and love bright eyes, you will love this album, if you have never heard any bright eyes previous albums, this is a really good one to be introduced with, definatly the most accesible album, and maybe one of the best he's done!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, 8 Jun. 2004

Hope of the states have come onto the music scene in fine style. Their opening track of their debut single is absolutly staggering. The raw emotion and power shakes the earth and gives you goosebumps. Its a theme which runs throughout this album.I can think of no better opening track! The whole album on a whole has a great sound and does remind me of the old radiohead, when they used to do more powerful stuff. They make fantstic use of strings and some brilliant guitaring, mixed with piano and powerful vocals and lyrics.
The album is far from depressing as i was more expecting, but more of an uplifting album in places, giving you a strong sense of determination and strength in the face of adversity.
Every song is a highlight and ive never felt the need to go anywhere near the skip button!Muse are powerful at times...radiohead can be at times...but hope of the states have truely won over them both.A definate must have album if you like the above and seriously powerful strings, guitars.
There is also a hidden track at the end after 10 minutes...which is fantastic.
This is looking like one of the albums of the year...

what the hell has happened here?It looks like the famous "third move in a trilogy bug" has totally destroyed this movie. When i went to see this at the movies, the best part of my time there, was when i saw the incredible preview to the return of the king, just that one preview (as long as it is) shock and excited me more than any part of this last installment of the matrix did. The plot again is beyond comprehension, and has a very weak dull finish. It seems like they probably thought up quite a few different endings, then picked the wrong one. I felt the film had lost direction a bit in the Matrix Reloaded, but that had an interesting story, and some great fight scenes (Burley Brawl) and car chases, it did blow me away. Revolutions however, was a load of talky rubbish. EVERYONE had "something to say". "before you go, can i just say..." JUST GET ON WITH IT!!!!Then there were the aweful cheesy moments which were laughable, the best being agent smiths terrible "bad guy laugh". I couldnt stop laughing , and trinity's death(sorry for spoling it,though there isnt too much to spoil) was helarious, how could anyone feel any type of sadness at that moment?she'd already died once! Her bringing back was almost as fantastic as the infamous "Dallas" moment, where it was all just a dream!
Lets face it, finding a decent third part of a trilogy is very hard to find.
Godfather 3-iffy, weakest movie
Return of the Jedi-Weak ending, could of been worse, still didnt compare to second
Terminator 3-utter rubbish
There is however, one complete triology, with all 3 parts worthy of your viewing, and that is simply lord of the rings.
It takes the matrix to china down, gives it a sound kung fu style beating, and sends it home crying..
If you aint seen this and you really want to..prepare to be very disapointed

5.0 out of 5 stars 100% perfect, 24 Dec. 2003
As an advanced pianist+ an okish guitarist lol, this songbook is perfect! If you play the piano well, and u love muse, this really is all you need. This album has the most piano in, out of all 4 albums, and it is all in this book in standard bass and treble cleft. Interesting to see how much matt has matured as a pianist, using more "rich" notes such as E# and Cb.
The guitar side is impecable as usual!Every song is tabbed including the rather good interlude!
If your just a pianist, there is more than enough to satisfy you in this. If your a guitarist, again there is more than enough to satisfy you.
If your both, then you have hours of practising and enjoyment to be had from this!
Best song book so far.

4.0 out of 5 stars Radiohead in reverse!, 18 Sept. 2003
This review is from: Silence Is Easy (Audio CD)
From quite an emotional debut album, silence easy is a little less down beat and "soars" more than cries. Though the emotion is definatly not as powerful as love is here. Anyway, the album on a whole is still very good, no "dud" tracks and no need to even go near your skip button! Opens very upbeat, then hits you with the quite powerful fidelity. Very good use of strings in many parts of this album, which they didnt do in the first. But not even a hint of lead guitar or a slight solo which is mildly disapointing. Four to the floor is a totally fantastic track, and soars very well, should be the next singal. On a whole i love the album...but they have a nasty habbit of cutting some of the best songs short! Fidelity and bring my love being the main offenders! They are brilliant songs and just as your getting into them...they are over. A hint of the old "alcoholic" feeling, which i always thought was a bit short for such a good song. Thats the only reason why i didnt give it 5 stars...but on the whole, an excellent 2nd album!
