Learn Latin: The Book of the Daily Telegraph QED Series
Learn Latin: The Book of the Daily Telegraph QED Series
by Peter Jones
Edition: Paperback
Price: £14.99

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners, 10 Aug. 2017

The book starts off well but soon starts to irritate. Each chapter introduces something new without any consolidation or in-built revision. It's a case of too much too quickly. By chapter 13 I was completely lost - why does a Latin beginner need to or want to translate Catullus? Very disappointing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Misleading!, 26 Jan. 2017
The reviews posted are for the later John Ford American version. This is a restored BFI re-issue of the 1929 British version - not released until April 2017 so it cannot be reviewed yet - hence my 3 stars, I had to put a star rating to get this information on-line so that people are not misled by reviews referring to another version.

They look good and are comfortable - for a short time. The Velcro eventually will not stick and they fall off and flap about as you move around the garden. Not worth the money.

Forgotten Stars: My Father and the British Silent Film World
Forgotten Stars: My Father and the British Silent Film World
by Jonathan Croall
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars Still Forgotten, 25 Nov. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Although written by John Stuart's son this is more of a general survey of British silent film stars rather than a biography as such. However, that is an observation not a criticism. It makes you want to find out more. As far as I know this book was ignored by newspaper book reviewers and so still only reaches a minority audience - it deserves better. Why doesn't BBC4 review such books and show a series of British silent films to accompany it?

They look good for a short time but rot in the ground in no time at all so have to be replaced. I now use the large plastic labels from Aldi and write on them with an ordinary pencil - much more durable.

KING OF THE MOVIES: FRANCIS X. BUSHMAN
KING OF THE MOVIES: FRANCIS X. BUSHMAN
Price: £7.66

4.0 out of 5 stars Long Live the King!, 15 Mar. 2015
Francis X Bushman, if he is remembered at all, is the antagonist Messala in the silent film version of "Ben Hur" (the best). However, this well researched book reveals that this role was virtually a comeback for Bushman. He had been a massive star in the very early years of Hollywood - ie pre 1920s. The authors were first approached to write the book by his widow but this did not mean they produced a syrupy biography to please the woman who loved him. Although it has been revised since her death to add a few more "warts" to the portrait, it nevertheless rings true - the backbone of the book hasn't been changed. It also features some excellent photographs. It does what I think a good film biography should do -make you want to see the films.

Dark Lady of the Silents: My Life in Early Hollywood
Dark Lady of the Silents: My Life in Early Hollywood
by Miriam Cooper
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars Forgotten star, 15 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Now a largely forgotten star, this autobiography is an interesting, anecdotal read. It rings true - this lady lived and worked in the silent era. She worked with such greats as D.W.Griffith and even married one of them - Raoul Walsh. Relying on memory rather than research she wrote her memoirs just in time - she was dead just a few years later

Murder in Hollywood: Solving a Silent Screen Mystery
Murder in Hollywood: Solving a Silent Screen Mystery

3.0 out of 5 stars Sensational but not solved, 15 Mar. 2015
One of the great mysteries of early Hollywood and one of the series of scandals which led to the imposition of the production code which effectively censored all Hollywood films for decades thereafter. Unfortunately the author goes for sensation rather that research. His supposed solution is nothing of the sort but just another theory. A disappointing book.

Joseph P. Kennedy's Hollywood Years: The First and Only Outsider to Fleece Hollywood
Joseph P. Kennedy's Hollywood Years: The First and Only Outsider to Fleece Hollywood
by Cari Beauchamp
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £21.25

4.0 out of 5 stars Power crazy, 15 Mar. 2015
Cari Beauchamp also wrote "Without Lying Down" a book about the powerful women in early Hollywood. It was her name which drew me to this book not that of Joseph Kennedy. I knew he had had an affair with Gloria Swanson but I didn't realize just how involved he was in Hollywood wheeling and dealing until I read this book. What a cunning, devious, self-serving man he was! Cari Beauchamp has thoroughly researched both him and the era and has come up with an eminently readable book for a wide audience, not just those interested in film and/or politics - not in the least stodgy and with some excellent, seldom seen photographs.

A fascinating book. Michael Ankerich has researched the lives of a handful of now forgotten female stars of the silent screen and brought them back into the public eye - if only the films they made were readily available!
