Wasting Police Time: The Crazy World of the War on Crime
Wasting Police Time: The Crazy World of the War on Crime
by David Copperfield
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

Split between getting this as a present for my old man (25 years in the force), or 'A Fair Cop' by Michael Bunting (0007303254). They're both great reads, but although this is undeniably lighter and more entertaining (so better for a Christmas gift, maybe), it isn't available in hardback, which is a shame, as hardbacks make for better presents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real substance..., 11 Sept. 2013
This review is from: Batman Begins (Paperback)
This is a substantial book, with something for every fan of the Christopher Nolan 'The Dark Knight' trilogy. There are three elements to it: firstly, 20 pages of interviews with Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer, who jointly wrote the screenplay; secondly, about 150 pages of screenplay; and finally, 185 pages of storyboards, covering key scenes in the film. Comparing the storyboards to the actual film is fascinating for anyone interested in film, not just Batman, likewise the screenplay, of course, and the interviews are pretty in-depth, being more than the typical effort you read in a magazine or online. Highly recommended for fans of the Batman franchise and films in general, and for that matter, graphic novels.

Best of British Festivals
Best of British Festivals
by Barney Jefferies
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive listing.., 8 Sept. 2013
but not a detailed listing. Mind you, it covers around 470 festivals all around Britain at all times of year, from food and drink, to arts and literature, as well as, of course, all the music festivals, and a load more you wouldn't have dreamed of. Obviously, the details are can only run to a basic description of what each is about, the facilities, timing, with some particular things to look out for, and where you can find out more. The main listing is by region, with a subsidiary listing by month. With the fantastic summer we've had, we got some great ideas for one or two breaks in the UK. Highly recommended.

Dr Atkins' Age-Defying Diet Revolution
Dr Atkins' Age-Defying Diet Revolution
by Robert C. Atkins
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars A really interesting, SCIENCE-based diet, 2 Sept. 2013
There's a ton of information in all Dr Atkins' books, and this is no exception. Well-established and tested research data backs up all his assertions, and the bio-mechanics are explained, which all helps the credibility of the advice. The cover exhorts readers to 'Feel Great, Live Longer'; after 3 months of taking much advice from this book, I do feel great (though it feels so empowering to take positive control of your diet anyway, maybe it's just psychosomatic), but I'll have to keep my fingers crossed!

Welcome to the world of kindle, ladies and gentlemen.

City of Stars (Stravaganza)
City of Stars (Stravaganza)
by Mary Hoffman
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy the hardback edition, to keep forever..., 16 Mar. 2013
..here: City of Stars (Stravaganza), because you're going to want to keep this amazing book for years to come. Mary Hoffman has created a wonderful, rich world to escape into, and you'll want to revisit again and again (and at the time of writing, the hardback is actually cheaper than the paperback). Enjoy.

The Little Book Of Mornington Crescent
The Little Book Of Mornington Crescent
by Tim Brooke-Taylor
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious..., 15 Mar. 2013
Very British humour, no doubt, ideal for lovers of Radio 4 comedy, and similar intelligent nonsense. Stovold's Mornington Crescent Almanac 2002 is very similar, and anyone who liked the one will like the other. They solved birthday present conundrums for my father two years on the trot. But what next...?

5.0 out of 5 stars Hardback edition makes a better gift..., 15 Feb. 2013
This is a great summary of Newcastle's greatest, but a paperback makes a poor gift compared to a hardback. For some reason it isn't linked, so I got my old fella the paperback, but wish I'd got the hardback now, which I eventually found here: Newcastle's Cult Heroes: The Toon's 20 Greatest Icons

The Holiday
The Holiday

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, but check out the earlier edition..., 14 Feb. 2013
This review is from: The Holiday (Paperback)
Cheaper elsewhere on Amazon: The Holiday
This is, as you would expect, a great holiday read, but readers might like to know that there is an identical earlier edition, that differs only in having a less 'cartoony' cover illustration, which can still be bought brand new, and much more cheaply, here on Amazon:

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing landmark documentary...,, 8 Jan. 2013
This review is from: Life [DVD] (DVD)
..as almost all the reviews attest. Actually first read Inside Life gift book, an amazing companion book to the series, following 10 children who in turn follow the film teams around the world, so you see not only the wonderful natural sights, but also how they went about filming it all. After that, I was inspired to get the DVD set, and enjoy the TV series all over again!
