2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 18 Jun. 2017

This review is from: Kiev 1941 (Paperback)
A frustrating book. Titled Kiev 1941 but a large part of the book covers the general position in Russia in 1941. The account of the Battle of Kiev does not start until more than half way through the book and then only in outline. More maps would also be useful - the ones included are from David Glantz and are very good. But they do not really allow the reader to follow the details. Overall very disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars A valuable addition to the books on the eastern front campaign in WW2, 11 Feb. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I enjoyed this book and very pleased that another bit of the Russo - German war has been covered in an English language book. The battles around Vitebsk were huge. The maps are one area that could be improved. I got around the issue by scanning a selection of the maps, enlarging them and then making liberal use of red and black pens. It worked for me. But Mr Glantz how about employing a professional cartographer? It also wetted my appetite so that I would love to have more details of the operations rather than the general overview this book gives - but then I suppose we would talking about a book of 4000 pages (yes pelase).
Two other comments. (1) A number of times it has stated how the Red Army was improving. That must be so. But it still largely appears that success was achieved by an attack everywhere philosphy regardless of the terrible casualties. Brute force? (2) No mention is made of the increasing threat of the western allies and the diversion of force that this imposed on the Germans. Apart from the need to defend German from air raids - in January 1944 20+ (quality) German divisions and over 400 tanks and assault guns were in Italy; also in January 1944 the German army in France had over 800 tanks and assault guns. What difference would they have made on the eastern front?

Avoid this. The sound quality is very poor. I listened to some of it and put it on the discard pile.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent books on the Russo German war., 30 Dec. 2016

This is a very welcome book on a less well known part of the eastern front in WW2. The 2 books deal in detail with the month long campaign from mid December 1943 to the end of January 1944. It shows the skill of the Germans in moving their forces around the front to try to contain the Russian offensive and then hold their nerve to counter attack at the end of the the period covered in the books. But it also shows that whatever they did the Russians could replace their losses and would attack again. The books take some reading but the effort is well worthwhile.
As minor negatives (1) there is no statement of German losses. This is a bit puzzling. Are the records missing? (2) the map books are comprehensive but difficult to refer to whilst reading the text.
I hope the author is encouraged to produce more book son the period 1943-44 on the eastern front. There is so much more that has not been adequately covered. Perhaps the German counter attack at Zhitomir in November 1943?

The Insatiable Earl: A Life of John Montagu
The Insatiable Earl: A Life of John Montagu

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant book, 11 Nov. 2016

This is just an excellent book. Well written and with copious quotes from the correspondence of Lord Sandwich and his contempories. Informative and providing insights on - for example - patronage in Georgian Britain, the problems with ships rotting and the crisis at the beginning of the war for America. I was especially pleased with the indpendent line taken by the author (backed up by the evidence) on a number of issue - the Palliser v Keppel affair; and the strategic priority for Britain in the War for America. The character assessments of the leading naval figures of the period were invaluable. Any weaknesses - only one. I would have liked more on his relationship with Martha ray. But a small quibble.

2.0 out of 5 stars So disappointing, 22 Aug. 2016

This review is from: By Default (Audio CD)
I really like the band of Skulls - their first 3 studio albums are excellent and the 2 live albums (Brixton and Southampton) capture their live act perfectly. So very keen to get hold of the latest offering - but oh so disappointing. A change of style - and a change for the worse. I have tried to get into the songs but really can't pin any one of them down. Each time I finish I just get a bleh feeling - bland and mediocre. Sorry but this CD is heading for the discard pile. Two stars - well, really one but two because I hope they can take note and produce the goods next time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fault in manufacturing?, 13 Mar. 2016

I recently ordered 2 sets of these cases. Both packages arrived the next day and that was very pleasing. Package one - excellent and no complaints. However, package 2 arrived and 4 of the 25 were broken. In addition the cases were not finished properly in that odd bits of plastic (from the joins to the molds perhaps?) were left in 3 or 4 places on every case. Not a big issue but irritating.
