Assassin's Price (The Imager Portfolio)
Assassin's Price (The Imager Portfolio)
Price: £10.44

5.0 out of 5 stars While I have read the two earlier books in this ..., 24 Sept. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
While I have read the two earlier books in this arc of the imager series, Assassin's Price works as an independent book. The plotting is as complex, the charcters as likable, the villians as villainous, as the rest of the series. Unusually, this is not told from the point of view of an imager, Instead, we learn about Solidar from the PoV of Charyn, heir of the Rex, the future King. It's interesting to see the world as experienced by someone without the power of a powerful imager. While Charyn will be king, he is a king with no money, little power, surrounded by enemies. Nobody makes appointments to see him because they assume he'll be assassinated before he can do anything for them. As someone in an early Imager book said, you'll find you never have enough golds, power or sleep to get things done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Post Climate Change Dystopia: Magical Creatures Added, 20 Sept. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Hunter (Paperback)
The first of a new series - at least I hope it's more than a trilogy and we pick up book 4 rather than starting a new trilogy with the same people but a different focus. It's after climate change, a nuclear bomb in the Middle East. This has opened the world to Outsiders, some of whom attack humans, others, the Hounds, defend them. The Hounds are similar to Valdemar Companions, but different in major ways: there always more than two, they come from different magical traditions, have different powers, and cannot always mind-speak their partners. Some of the human partnerss think they are simply animals. The Hounds need manna, life force, to survive. Thus it's a symbiotic relationship that sometimes becomes more personal, a real love arising between Hound and Human. Joy, the heroine, is a Hunter. Rules require all Hunters to report to the main city, Apex. To avoid panic, citizens of Apex are unaware of the real dangers facing the city. Instead, Hunters and hunts are presented as entertainment. Joy, a "turnip" (country bumpkin) reports to the city to avoid a team being sent to the Monastery, where all the Hunters would be found and required to go to Apex. Unlike Valdemar, the universe of the Hunter is directly tied to choices made by human beings today: climate change, potential nuclear warfare, abuse of the planet. It is also, incidentally, a series you can give your bright 11 year old to read: no explicit sex. Nothing more than a kiss.

Blood Kissed (The Lizzie Grace Series Book 1)
Blood Kissed (The Lizzie Grace Series Book 1)
Price: £2.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Two Great Heroines, Plus a cute Werewolf, 21 Aug. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I loved this: great universe building - werewolves, who run their reservation, witches, who think they run everything else, vamps, all nicely balanced with humans around as well. The heroine - Not Good Enough, according to her witch family, oneof the six major Witch Families. She is fleeing them, with her a familiar. In this case, her familiar is a woman, from one of the lesser witch families. Thrown in the Wild Magic. A powerful enemy who believes revenge is best served cold. I like all Arthur's series, but I think this one will be my favorite.

A Mini-Micro Encyclopedia of Modern Russian Humor
A Mini-Micro Encyclopedia of Modern Russian Humor
Price: £0.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Humour plus Information: a win win collection, 20 Jun. 2017
The first requirement of a book of humour is that it be funny. Budman's collection satisfies this nicely: the jokes make you laugh. Budman, in his introduction, says that this is a book about post-Soviet Russia; Putin's Russia, and his jokes reflect that. There are jokes that reflect universal categories: men/women, powerful/powerless. Others, like the political jokes about corruption and Putin himself, are specifically grounded in modern Russia. The broad categories are universal but the specifics are Russian. The reader not only laughs but finishes the collection with a greater understanding of a foreign, often bewildering, place. Humour is a serious business, and Budman demonstrates that.

Grave Mistake (Codex Blair Book 1)
Grave Mistake (Codex Blair Book 1)
Price: £2.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Usual Flawed Heroine, Unusual Back Story, 16 May 2017
A flawed heroine, abused during her time spent as a foster child, is a private investigator. Broke, about to be evicted from her apartment, friendless and afraid to have a friend, she takes a job from a woman who believes her husband is cheating on her with a ghost. She discovers she's a mage, and her if she's not good enough she'll be executed. But first she has to save the world, with the help of some ravens, from ending.

I liked it, have downloaded the next two in the series. But at times the heroine is a little irritating. She should know, I'd think, that that is a really, really dumb thing to do. This almost seems like a book mainly written to set up the series. It reminds me a bit of the Jane Yellowrock series: abused foster child, doesn't know where she's from, discovers herself...

The Four Sisters - A Regency Romance Compilation: The Four Sisters Books 1-4
The Four Sisters - A Regency Romance Compilation: The Four Sisters Books 1-4
Price: £2.23

4.0 out of 5 stars love interests, four genuinellly stupid misunderstandings, 2 May 2017
Four sisters, each every different, as heroines. Four unlikely, again very different, love interests, four genuinellly stupid misunderstandings. There is a truly evil villain. It was fun to read, and I liked the people. The reason for four stars rather than five: occasionally, I would think, how could anybody be that dumb? This series has "class" and an examination of class as an underlying theme throughout the four books, something I have not seen in other Regency Romances. Style and rank, yes, frequently dealt with. But class, no.

It's got some very good stuff, a lot of mediocre stuff, and a few pieces that are unreadable. It's good to buy to find new people you may like.
