Death on the Rive Nord (Inspector Lucas Rocco Book 2)
Death on the Rive Nord (Inspector Lucas Rocco Book 2)
Price: £2.48

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting New French Crime Series, 19 April 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Inspector Rocco makes an authentic seeming new voice in this genre. He has the usual disapproving superior to contend with and no home life to speak of, apart from a nosy egg giving neighbour. However he becomes aware of a people smuggling ring run by Algerian gangsters when he is asked for help by the wife of the leader who has run away with her son from her brutal husband. Will look out for the next in the series as I like the different background.

4.0 out of 5 stars Haunting and Morbid, 28 Mar. 2017

I found myself continuing to read although it was not actually enjoyable to do so. I have found some of this author's previous books more interesting and the backgrounds are always authentic and usually stark. certainly would not recommend this for light holiday reading, especially if visiting Scandinavia.

Riptide (Inspector Troy series Book 4)
Riptide (Inspector Troy series Book 4)
Price: £3.79

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Evocation of pre war life in Britain, 21 Mar. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Another mystery to solve for a very unlikely policeman. Inspector Troy, the son of a Russian aristocrat who managed to escape the revolution and become a successful newspaper owner, friend of Mr Churchill etc. Is once again drawn into a case. This time an American Colonel is involved in the search for a German spy. Troy also has to cope with the reappearance in his life of the beautiful, but quite wild, Kitty, the daughter of his friend a policeman. Great characterization and sense of life during a war when nothing was normal but everyone had to carry on as if it were. Fascinating stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unusual Crime Setting, 17 Mar. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Captain Alexei Korolev, an experienced state investigator under Stalin, is called to investigate a sequence of dangerous events, including the horrific murder of an American nun whose body is found in a wrecked church. Korolev has to navigate and keep his head between different political and civil factions but remain true to his own calling at the same time. He is a believable hero, carrying out his dangerous investigation with integrity whilst still remaining true to the communist ideal that everything is done for the good of the people, however unlikely this might appear. Really looking forward to the next of this unusual and entertaining series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping stuff, 6 Mar. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Intricately plotted and with good characterization, this really is difficult to put down. A middle-aged woman is found wandering along a road after a car accident and appears to be confused. She says she is one of the two Bethany girls whose disappearance from the area some years ago has never been solved and which has been left as an open case by the local police. This Author is known for her unusual and intriguing plots and this is no exception . Recommended for those who like to be drawn in by degrees with a few surprises along the way.

The Anarchist Detective: (Max Cámara 3)
The Anarchist Detective: (Max Cámara 3)
Price: £3.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Atmospheric Spanish Crime Series, 26 Feb. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Max Camara , just back from a long leave to recover from injuries sustained during his last case, is almost immediately plunged into the case of a young girl, raped and murdered. Leads seem to be connected to events which happened in the Spanish Civil War, long before she was even born. Amazingly, he also feels that his Grandfather, Hilario, might know more than he is admitting too. He has also reconnected with an old school friend, Yago, who is also now head of the police in the region. When Max and his girlfriend, Alicia, are nearly killed while investigating into the production of Saffron for which the area is famous, he realizes that there is a serious fraud going on.

Another Thing to Fall (Tess Monaghan Book 10)
Another Thing to Fall (Tess Monaghan Book 10)
Price: £4.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Detection, 25 Feb. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Tess Monaghan makes a sympathetic investigator in this excellent series set in Baltimore. Here she investigates odd goings on a movie set supposed to represent the life of a steel worker in better times. She also seems to have adopted a new protege so Crow, unfortunately, is not present this time. Tess is a well rounded character, in all senses of the word, which makes her eating habits of interest, especially as some are distinctly odd to a British reader.

A Death in Valencia: (Max Cámara 2)
Price: £3.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Spanish Crime Series, 16 Feb. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Lots of authentic atmosphere in this series set in the beautiful city of Valencia. You can almost feel the relentless heat of the summer, building up to the inferno of July and August, when a body is washed up on the beach. Detective Max Camera has an unsatisfactory home life, culminating in his apartment building actually falling down into a pile of rubble and killing a young mother and son. Fearing a political cover-up, Max pursues his own type of justice to a somewhat bitter end. Looking forward to the next in the series.

Bernie Gunther, ex spy and now concierge of a grand hotel on the French Riviera, is reluctantly dragged away from his job and weekly Bridge nights when a friend and player is murdered. He is introduced to the famous English author, Somerset Maugham by his nephew Robin. Anne, Bernies new girlfriend, is also very interested in meeting Maugham as she is apparently writing a book about him. Everyone and everything is not exactly as it would seem in the beautiful villa at Cap Ferrat and Bernie also has a past that comes back to haunt him. Will his quick wits save him once again.... looking forward to the next instalment greatly. In a footnote, It is also revealed that Somerset Maugham was actually a British spy in the first world war and involved in M.I 5.
