5.0 out of 5 stars An Amicus classic!, 4 Sept. 2015
The Skull is one of the best British horror movies of the mid-1960s. It has a great cast (featuring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Patrick Wymark and Michael Gough), tremendous atmosphere and cinematography (in 2.35:1 ratio), and a fantastical story set mostly in modern day London, but with a prologue set in the 19th century. One for Amicus fans and those curious about classic horror.

5.0 out of 5 stars The 1950s best horror, 27 Aug. 2014
The French BluRay edition of Night Of The Demon is supposed to be superb with great image quality. According to reviews, subtitles can be turned off and the booklet is (obviously) in French. If you wish to buy, you'll find it cheaper from Amazon.fr

4.0 out of 5 stars New Hammer's first footsteps, 14 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Wake Wood was the first new theatrical release for the revived Hammer Films. Made in 2008, but released in 2011, this UK/Irish co-production was a good attempt at re-establishing the well known horror brand. The film feels very much like an episode of Hammer House Of Horror, with its contemporary setting, folk horror twist in the tale and convincing cast. This US BluRay is presented in 2.35:1 aspect ratio, whereas the UK DVD was 1.85:1. It's well worth purchasing if you're a Hammer completist and follower of their current output.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sony on form in 2013!, 9 May 2013
Following on from their 5-star review in What Hi-Fi's 32-inch TV category last year, the KDL-32W653a continues Sony's return to form. They've now incorporated X-Reality PRO from 2012's higher end models, as well as Motionflow XR 200Hz. This is my first flat screen TV, replacing an old CRT. Standard definition Freeview is upscaled and looks much, much better than expected. The four Freeview HD channels look absolutely superb. The display quality is very uniform and I've not noticed any clouding. The build and styling is really nice, with a thin black metal bezel. Sound quality is better than most flat LED TVs. The user interface is sleek and easy to both set-up and navigate. WiFi connectivity is built-in and features BBC iPlayer, YouTube, Sony Entertainment Network, Demand 5, Netflix, LoveFilm and various other media apps. It's a shame it doesn't have 4OD, but hopefully this will come on board with future updates. You get two HDMI ports, 1 SCART socket, 1 USB, 1 ethernet and various audio sockets. For the price, the W653a is amazing value. Sony are selling this on their website for £549, with a £50 discount if ordered online. John Lewis stores are selling this model for £499.95 with a free five-year warranty. I'd highly recommend this television to new-comers to HD TV and people looking for a great quality, mid-range set for living rooms where space is at a premium. Please note: Screen Mirroring works with Miracast compliant devices only. Sadly, if you use an iPad, you'll probably need to get an Apple TV device to use AirPlay.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hammer Triumphant!, 26 Mar. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Woman in Black [DVD] (DVD)
The Woman In Black is a wonderful return to the mainstream for Hammer Films. The $13m chiller has so far raked in almost $106m at the box office and has become one of the most successful British horror movies of the past twenty years. If you love suspense and an abundance of jumps, then this movie is for you. Hopefully, the DVD will also include the uncut 15 certificate version.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slick Creepy Thriller, 2 July 2011
This review is from: The Resident [DVD] (DVD)
Much, much better than some reviewers would have you believe. If you loved Hammer's black and white thrillers of the 50s and 60s, then you'll love The Resident. The photography by Guillermo Navarro is beautifully shot and the direction is slick. The film reminded me of Hammer's The Snorkel, with its creepy, quite believable villain. The story builds the tension and has a satisfying end. The cast are all terrific here, with a lovely small part for the beloved Christopher Lee and strong performances from Hilary Swank and the amazing Jeffrey Dean Morgan! I would welcome more twisted thrillers from the revitalized Hammer. Check out the Icons Of Suspense set for a taste of what I'm talking about. All in all, well worth watching. My partner was suitably impressed too! Can't wait for The Woman In Black!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Album of the Summer!, 21 May 2011
This review is from: MAZES (Audio CD)
I first heard this playing before a Dean Wareham gig at XOYO in April. The repetitive rhythm and blissful effects laden guitar noodling refresh where other bands fail to reach. I can't stop playing it. Tracks Mazes, When You Cut and In The Sun are favourites. For me, it's the surefire album of the summer!
