Towards The Megalith
Towards The Megalith

3.0 out of 5 stars Avatara's review of Disma "Towards The Megalith"., 8 Oct. 2017
This review is from: Towards The Megalith (Audio CD)
It was definitely the cover artwork that drew my initial attention to this monolithic slab of Grinding, Death-Doom. I listened to the album on youtube to see whether or not I would spend my hard earned disposable income on it but alas it didn't fire my imagination! Disma were founded in 2005 and have members that have been active in the Death Metal scene since it's inception, having ties to many bands but most noted is Incantation. This album is obviously influenced by early Autopsy, Paradise Lost, Bolt Thrower and a little Obsessed thrown in for good measure. It would seem that a number of bands around the world are trying to map out heavier uncharted waters in the Death Metal genre but are sacrificing clarity for brute force.. The production is very muddy and none of the songs are very memorable even though there is a hint of groove in the albums tracks. There seems to be a tipping of the hat to Hard-Core Punk style riffs that have been slowed right down which is quite quirky but not enough to lift the album above any number of competing Death Metal albums released the same year. If you want your eardrums to bleed and feel physically sick then this album is definitely for you as the lower register of sound frequencies will certainly stir your guts. I love Death Metal and many other forms of Extreme Music but this album is not for me. This album is one hell of a way to give yourself a ripping headache!!!

This review is from: Sea of Ignorance [VINYL] (Vinyl)
I have been a Brutality fan since I first heard the "Death Is Just The Beginning" Volume II compilation album in 1992. I have all of their releases on vinyl and I am only missing two on CD, they are without a doubt one of my very favourite bands. I was elated to say the least when they started releasing music again back in 2013. I eagerly await their new music and when it comes out, I buy it and devour it with blissful abandon! "Sea of Ignorance" is no exception! The vinyl version of the album is limited to1000 hand numbered copies and is of the highest quality vinyl money can buy. The album cover is a gatefold sleeve and is of the best quality cardboard. The lyrics are printed on the gatefold inner which also has some amazing artwork on it that compliments the lyrical themes of the songs well. "Sea of Ignorance" is an excellent all around package and any vinyl addict would be proud to own it. The songs are tight, very well produced and as brutal as they have ever been!!! Each new song is another well crafted string to their bow and a joy to listen to. The only thing amiss on this Death Metal Masterpiece is that there are only 7 new songs and a brilliant cover version of Bathory "Shores in Flames". The album is so addictive that you will want to spin it again and again as soon as it is finished. Unfortunately Jim Coker (Drums) and Don Gates (Guitars) are no longer with the band, the new guy is Ruston Grosse who has taken over the drum throne from Jim Coker and for a very good reason, he is amazing!! Brutality are now a four piece but this doesn't take away from any of the furious and bludgeoning power of their brand of Technical, Brutal Death Metal! Every Death Metal fanatic needs to buy this pounding Masterpiece, it is worth its weight in gold!!!

I absolutely love this little suede-leather, tassle fringe back pack. The suede feels and looks really great and the inner lining is top notch. The bag is the perfect size for all my daily necessities and it really suites my "rock chick", "Goth" wardrobe. There is a small zippered pouch for keys or important little things that you can access very quickly if you need to. The straps are a little thin but functional, the stitching is immaculate and the overall finish looks more expensive than the asking price. The magnetic catch is of a really good quality and makes sure that the bag doesn't open unexpectedly. I am very happy with my little back-pack and can recommend it to anyone with out any hesitation. This little bag is well worth the money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Avatara's Review of Vader "The Empre" vinyl, 15 April 2017

This review is from: The Empire [VINYL] (Vinyl)
Vader have been consistent and prolific since 1988's "Live in Decay" demo tape and "The Empire" is one more notch on a flawless belt of Metal Mayhem!! The over-all feel of "The Empire" is more stripped down than the two previous efforts "Tibi Et Igni" and" Welcome to the Morbid Reich" respectively and has elements of 2000's "Litany" to boot. The songs are more straight forward with hardly any ambient background soundscapes and as fast as Vader have ever been, this does not however detract from the sheer power and aggressiveness of this album! The present incarnation of the band seem to have gelled beautifully and are like a well oiled machine firing on all cylinders. The drumming on this album (courtesy of James) is insanely tight and fast and gravity blast beats are the order of the day! The bass guitars (courtesy of Hal) are throbbing and compliment the songs perfectly. Guitars, guitars and more guitars are more than amply supplied by Peter and Spider who in my humble opinion are Death Metal's Tipton and Downing, they are both true masters of their craft! The riffs are solid, fast and furious and the leads go from chaotic to sublimely melodic leaving you satisfied and enthralled! "The Empire" may not be as grand in it's over-all feel as previous efforts but it is a great Straight forward Death Metal album that is lean and mean from start to finish. The cover, lyric sheet and vinyl are all top notch and the play back is flawless! I can whole heartedly recommend this album to any Vader or Death Metal fan! Your money will be very well spent!

5.0 out of 5 stars Avatara's review of Depeche Mode "Spirit", 1 April 2017
This review is from: Spirit (Audio CD)
Depeche Mode are perennial in their ability to remain relevant decade after decade and "Spirit" is a gritty triumph that harkens back to the darker, dirtier days of "Ultra" and earlier albums like "Violator". The album cover is a drab grey punctuated with black Flags and what appear to be army boots marching, it would seem that the present state of international affairs has stirred up a fire in the belly of this stalwart band and it translates into exciting music and lyrics. There is a return to a more electronic sound that has the trade mark "Industrial" feel although the album opener is started with what sounds like a grand piano. The songs have a heavier emphasis on the electronic drums as well as droning keyboards and samples that are lightly peppered with guitar and David and Martin's wonderful soothing vocals. The overall feel of "Spirit" is dense and dark with an almost opiate effect delivered by the vocals, the proverbial "Iron Fist in the Velvet Glove" approach. This album is intense and soothing at the same time and takes you on a journey through a dystopian world as if you were on the wing. Depeche Mode are as good as ever and manage to bring their audience fresh sounding new music with this album, "Spirit" is a dark and intense triumph. If you are a fan of this incredible band then you need this album!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Avatara's review of Nasty Savage "Indulgence", 10 Mar. 2017

This review is from: indulgence LP (Vinyl)
I originally bought this album on picture disc when it first came out but the sound quality was not as good as I would have liked it to have been. Over the years I have always kept an eye open for a bargain vinyl copy of this amazing Thrash Metal master piece and lo and behold I finally have the version that sounds the best! This is the 1987 Metal Blade pressing and it is in very good condition for a second hand vinyl. The production is pretty standard for late 1980's Thrash Metal but the song writing is of a very high standard and the songs themselves are delivered with consummate musicianship. There are nine amazing tracks on this original vinyl version of the album. The lyrical content ranges from betrayal to sexual deviance and any other subject matter deemed taboo be the moral minority, bible bashing fascists. Nasty Savage challenged their audience with heavy, fast music and lyrics that were controversial and thought provoking. Their stage show was extreme as "Nasty Ronnie" the band's vocalist was known to break television screens over his head and flaunt his bleeding head to the crowd in a bid to shock and amaze Nasty Savage are criminally underrated as a band and in my humble opinion they should have been huge. "Indulgence" is the second full length album from these Floridian Thrashers and it is still amazing after all these years, it hasn't aged badly at all!! This album is definitely on the heavier side of the Thrash Metal spectrum but is still catchy and melodic. If you love Thrash Metal then you need to check out this amazing band and buy everything that they have released.

5.0 out of 5 stars Avatara's review of Massacre "Back From Beyond", 4 Mar. 2017
This review is from: Back From Beyond (Audio CD)
I bought this album on the strength of the "Back From Beyond" music video (Cartoon) making the rounds on Youtube and because I am a massive fan of their debut album "From Beyond". This album is a lot heavier and darker than it's spiritual predecessor (From Beyond) and after a single listen through I was head over heals in love with this Brutal Death Metal masterpiece!!! This album washed away all the bad memories of "Promise" and the poor quality of the "Second Coming" and "Tyrants Of Death" albums. Sadly Rick Rozz and Terry Butler are the only original members in the line-up for this album but Ed Webb (Vocals) and Mikey Mazzonetto (Drums) do an admirable job of replacing Cam Lee and Bill Andrews. The production on this album is flawless and in your face, making it a real pleasure to listen to!!! I was very fortunate to get the Clear Vinyl version on 180 gram pressing (I have also bought the two CD versions as I like to put my music on my MP3 Player). The vinyl looks lovely and the play back is flawless. The cover is of the best quality card as is the inner lyric sleeve. This album is worth every penny and I cannot recommend it highly enough!!! If you love your music heavy and dark then you can't go wrong with this astonishingly great Death Metal album!!!\m/\m/!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Avatara's Review of Cradle of Filth "Dusk and Her Embrace - The Original Sin" Gatefold Vinyl., 15 Nov. 2016

The artwork is astonishingly beautiful on this gatefold Vinyl Re-issue and the sepia colour pallet adds to the Gothic-Victorian style. The band picture on the inside gate fold is breath taking and is the apex of Vamperic Evil!!! The glossy lyric sheet is of the highest quality paper card and the printing is clear and well defined. The vinyl discs are an off-while-ivory colour with Dark brown and orange "Baphomet" Cacophonous labels. Simply stunning!!! The running order of the tracks is different to the MFN version and the tracks themselves are quite different to what we are used to. This makes for a strange but completely enjoyable musical experience and I am sure that I will grow to love this version of the album in no time at all! The overall feel of this version is darker and heavier and the production is fuller in its soundscape. If like me you have all the previous versions of the album then this is a must buy as it is simply too good to miss out on. I can wholeheartedly recommend this version of the album to any Cradle of Filth fan.

I am so pleased that Supernatural gets more and more in depth as the seasons come and go, each character arc and story becomes more complex. The writing, camera work and acting are top notch and even though some of the themes may repeat it still remains engaging and entertaining. I have been a fan since the beginning and if they keep up the high standards I will be a fan for the rest of my life. If you enjoy Supernatural then Season 10 is a must buy as it continues the Winchester Brothers saga admirably and leaves you ravenous for more!!! I highly recommend the entire series for anyone who enjoys dynamic, versatile and thrilling entertainment.
