5.0 out of 5 stars Not what it suggests on the tin ..., 5 Nov. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Ignore the generic "Secret War = SAS = Desert" cover - this book barely mentions the exploits of David Stirling's pirates, instead it is the gripping story of the birth and early days of the SBS told by following the career of it's deadliest Operator.

Anders Lassen was born into a noble Danish family and escaped to England seeking an opportunity to hit back at his country's occupiers. He found his niche in a small band of seaborne raiders terrorising the enemy in the maze of islands scattered between Greece & Turkey. A master of small unit tactics, deadly with a knife (and with the ladies) he ended the war as a major and the only SAS VC of WW2.

I read a lot of Special Forces literature and this book gives a lot of detail in areas that most others just skim over and helps put the Aegean campaign into it's proper historical perspective. Damien Lewis tells the tale with his usual verve and it reads like fiction. Actions like this were, indeed, the inspiration for 'The Guns of Navarone' and all it's successors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Iron, 27 Jan. 2011
This review is from: Powerslave (Audio CD)
Admittedly this was the album that converted me from Merseybeat to Metal as a student but I think it stands the test of time. I bought the 7" of Aces High for the cover and was instantly a fan (pity the t-shirt is long since worn out).

I've got most of the mid-period IM albums but this is still the one I play the most.

Anyway, review time: love it. Still play it lots 25 years after I first heard it. Buy it.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK ... as far as it goes, 27 Jan. 2011
As a collection of anecdotes on WWII armoured warfare it very informative. However, it is arranged thematically rather than chronologically which can make for some confused reading if you're not familiar with the timeline. Consequently it also lacks any narrative drive - probably best suited as a reference source for background rather than a read for the commute.

5.0 out of 5 stars MAD ... in a (very) good way, 27 Jan. 2011
This book has made me glad to be off work with the flu ... however the coughing spasms it induced ...
Anyway, I'm 40 pages in and already phoning for oxygen. Sergio is a genius and this book is the best of the best. Buy it but make sure your insurance is up to date.
