5.0 out of 5 stars The best quality goji berries - organic from Ningxia., 21 Jun. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Research showing the superior nutritional benefits of goji berries were done on one particular species, grown in one particular area in China (Ningxia) and also organic. These Sevenhills Goji berries are Organic berries from Ningxia so should meet the qualities

* 21 trace dietary minerals
* 18 amino acids, 8 of which are essential for life
* At least 4 polysaccharides - which fortify the immune system and much more
* 5 carotenoids, including beta-carotene and zeaxanthin, lutein, lycopene and cryptoxanthin
* 112 mg of Calcium, providing about 10% of Dietary Reference Intake (DRI)
* 1,132 mg Potassium giving about 24% of the DRI
* 9 mg of Iron 90% DRI
* 2 mg Zinc - 18% DRI
* 50 micrograms Selenium - 91% DRI. Selenium is needed for the functioning of healthy thyroid gland.
ORAC units over 25,300

The ORAC units is the level of antioxidant activity in a particular food.

In comparison other well known fruits and vegetables score far lower than goji berries.

Cherries – 670
Oranges – 750
Broccoli – 890
Raspberries – 1,220
Spinach – 1,260
Strawberries – 1,540
Kale - 1,770
Blueberries – 2,400
Prunes – 5,770
Goji Berries - 25,000

But you can see why berries, spinach and kale are so highly regarded as nutritious superfoods.

Goji berries are widely used in Chinese Medicine and I often buy them from my TCM herbalist.

Add a handful of berries into green tea and they plump up beautifully. if you are going to cook with them (or put in smoothies) soak in warm water first until they are plump.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating book - excellent read., 18 Jun. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a novel based on the life of the famous chef Augustes Escoffier

The bare bones of the story are as follows. Escoffier's real fame began when he worked in the Grand Hotel in Monte Carlo employed by Cesar Ritz then they both moved to the Savoy in London. Escoffier transformed French cuisine and kitchens and also made it acceptable for high class women to dine in public. Some of these women were famous in their time and Escoffier named dishes after them for example Peche Melba for the Australian singer, Nellie Melba and Fraises a la Sarah Bernhardt an actress to whom he was devoted. He was married but his wife Delphine and he lived separately for many years but died within days of each other in the same house.
He and Ritz were sacked by the Savoy but they went on to create the Ritz hotel in Paris then the Carlton in London. In 1913 he met Kaiser Wilhelm11 aboard the SS Imperator. Escoffier was responsible for dinner for well over a hundred German diginitaries and apparently after this achievement he was named Emperor of chefs by the Kaiser.
The book focuses on Escoffier's luscious food and over the top culinary experiences in general.I got a bit tired of hearing again and again of dishes studded with truffles and he seemed to liberally use fois gras, washed down of course with champagne. There was one rather unpleasant description of Escoffier's experience of eating an ortolan (apparently a tiny bird) whole and when I read about the rush of scalding blood into his throat I had to skip to the next paragraph.
As someone who has always been interested in Escoffier I found this book an easy to read and fascinating insight into the man.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not ideal but better than a chocolate bar ... higher protein to carb ratio would be preferred, 16 Jun. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
May not be the best product but just so convenient for pre and post workouts. A higher protein : carb ratio would be better 2 : 1 at least or higher is much better ... but it tastes great and super portable.. Sometimes you just can't prepare the right meal, or a shake just doesn't hit the spot. On those days these bars are great.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fine for a treat, but avoid grain containing foods for your cats main source of nutrition., 16 Jun. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Cats are carnivores, so shouldn't really eat anything but meat. So many of the cheaper pet foods contain starches, maize derivatives and complex carbs that aren't really suitable for a cat to eat. Proponents say that if a cat eats a mouse, for example, it will eat the seeds and vegetable matter that the mouse ate ... however this is a really tiny proportion of the content of the mouse! Much more important is that big cats (eg cheetahs) will prioritise organ meats over lean meat (we tend to give Tiddles chicken meat as a treat not realizing it's not that much of a treat really!!). The importance of liver, kidney and heart is clearly indicated when unexplained problems with cheetah breeding programmes were cured by feeding them organ meats..

Don't let your squeamishness about eating raw meat, or kidney and liver and heart, lead to excluding these key foods from your precious pet's diet.

Pottinger did experiments on feeding cats cooked meat as against raw meat and found that the cooked meat cats were infertile in 6 generations.

Cats do love biscuit so it's fine to include this as a treat for your cat but if you love your cat primarily feed it a natural diet which is raw meat (including ground up bone and organ meats). Pulverised chicken carcass is ideal if you can get it. Feeding raw meat like this usually works out a lot cheaper than feeding pet food.

Grain and gluten containing pet foods can be the cause of fits in your pet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Health power in a spoon, 16 Jun. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
An excellent quality wheatgrass powder that confirms it's gluten free status (gluten only comes in the wheat seeds not in the baby leaves that this is made from - though coeliacs should avoid due to the extremely small risk of cross contamination).

Wheatgrass is supposedly more nutritionally potent than barley grass - but both have substantial amounts of Vitamin A, C and K. Both contain Magnesium as the central molecule in chlorophyl (this has the same structure as haemogolobin in blood - but haemoglobin has Iron as the central molecule). Some nutritionists / alternative doctors suggest that this similarity is behind the benefits of consuming lots of greens!

A teaspoon of grass powder is equivalent to about 2 apples - the much often quoted suggestion that it's equivalent to 2lbs of vegetables is not absolutely correct - although depending on where and how the wheatgrass is grown will massively affect the amount and quality of nutrition it contains. You can find a lot of information about wheatgrass nutrition online.

The Hippocrates institute has brought healing to thousands of people using sprouts and wheatgrass as a diet for people with chronic and frequently incurable diseases (that were cured under this regime). Fresh wheatgrass grown in organic soil and freshly juiced is always going to be the best option, but using a powder like this is an excellent substitute.

How to take it? Anyone who has had a shot of wheatgrass will tell you it's not that pleasant on its own. One company offers a chocolate greens blend and I make this at home using a 50/50 split of green powder and organic cacao powder (Sevenhills do a very good quality cacao) ... mix with some almond milk and a banana or some berries and perhaps a little stevia if you prefer it sweeter (or use dates if you are following the Sirt diet).

This makes a really palatable super healthy drink - great to start the day.

A great addition to your diet especially if you know you don't eat enough fruit and vegetables.

5.0 out of 5 stars Miracle worker - fantastic, 16 Jun. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I bought this hoping for a miracle.. I'd splashed some hair dye on the wall - pale grey painted walls - and I thought the only option was repainting the whole wall. I never really imagined this would work (or that it would leave damage that would be equally disfiguring) but worth a try at 1/50th the cost of repainting a wall!

I'm amazed. I went really really gently with it using the rough side (as the smooth side didn't seem to make any difference) and for the first few minutes I thought it was hopeless. But I persisted and after about 10 minutes of gentle abrasion the mark was virtually gone. I've now gone round the whole house attacking all scuffs and marks on the walls with equal success. Brilliant.

2.0 out of 5 stars My cats give it the paws down, 15 Jun. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
My testing team of Gertie (large and incharge age 5), Sully (a very large smart Burmese age 12) and Nix (a curious small boned Devon Rex age 7).

While cats are usually very particular in their choices usually at least one of the three will enjoy a new toy. Sadly they didn't like this one at all. They had a sniff, but seemed to find it too difficult to grab the biscuits - so after a few tries they got bored and gave up.

Kerbl toy furry mice or Ruff n Tumble Catnip mice never go out of favour (Nix has a small collection of these and he'll bring one to us when he wants to play). Crackly cat tunnels also get the paws up. Afraid this one seems more suited to human entertainment than cats.

It's fairly robust and well made.

Manuka Doctor ApiRefine Illusionist Rapid Lift Mask 40 ml

4.0 out of 5 stars One of life's little luxuries, 15 Jun. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
A rich, thick and creamy face mask that smooths on easily . I love Manuka products because they are much more pure and have fewer chemicals than other products. Whenever possible I try to only put stuff on my skin that I'd possibly eat and Manuka Doctor products are certainly closer to that level of purity than most. After only two uses I can't say I see a massive difference in my wrinkles, but maybe at my age I'm a harder case - but for sure more than one application is definitely needed. Certainly it's a pleasure to use and makes me feel good after using and that's a boost in itself.
