4.0 out of 5 stars aaaaahh aya yaya aa a aa, 7 Sept. 2004
This review is from: Kasabian (Audio CD)
The only things I'd heard about them was L.S.F which features on Fifa 2004 and an interview with them and Mani in the NME where Mani proclaims them natural sucessors to the baggy crown and he's not wrong. If you like all things Mondays, Primal and Roses with a bit of UNKLE sprinkled on top dig your beenie out, dust off your Joe Bloggs and tuck in.
Along with the Bees and the Streets one the best albums of the year and a great antidote to the bedwetting wimp rock that is threatening this great islands fine musical heritage.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid debut, 16 July 2004
This review is from: The Concretes [Digipak] (Audio CD)
Imagine the VU's 'banana album' produced by Berry Gordy. An excellent debut that wears it's influences on it's sleeve whilst puffing away on Carribean woodbines. Motown and 60's pop influences are scattered throughout and a lead singer who makes Nico sounds positivly manic, strong sparse indie sounds interspersed with a great brass sound.
Something old, something new, something borrowed, something good.

From the clinical synth opening of Leave Them All Behind to the lazy sunshine sway of OX4 this will rightly be viewed as an all time classic in time.
Highlight would be the opening salvo of Leave the All Behind opening the album like an acid blast to the senses with an extraordianry crescendo that MBV would be proud of, segueing beautifully is the Byrds like jangle of Twisterella, not just a classic indie song but just classic pop. The rest of the album is beautifully sequenced so it really feels like a journey. A wonderful album by a wonderful band.

2.0 out of 5 stars Missed oppurtunity, 12 July 2004
All three videos are censored a la MTV so no swearing and horrible sound effects all over the songs. One star for the kung fu climax to Gravel Pit and one star for the retro Proct ya Neck video otherwise hugely disappointing, avoid.
To whom it may concern, please consider a decent Wu retrospective DVD, videos, interviews, maybe with some of their recent live shows at Hammersmith.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joy to the world, 27 April 2004

Gorgeous. If you can imagine one part MBV, one part Brian Wilson & onepart Air you're half way to imagining this great album. A wonderfullyevolving and involving disc that keeps the melodies, lyrics and beatsfresh, original yet reassuringly familiar. A personal highlighlight is thesedate rolling techno of Altzheimers. I can't recommend this album enoughespecially if you're planning on a few lazy afternoons in sunny gardens orfestivals. Enjoy (you will).

5.0 out of 5 stars Mr Dylan, the King., 12 Dec. 2003
Absolutely masterful. A thoroughly enjoyable romp through Dylans songbook with the Rolling Thunder Revue of 1975 with backing from, among others, Joan Baez, Mick Ronson (the spider from Mars)and Roger McGuinn (Byrds)make this a superb if not essential double set. Bob is in fine voice through all songs and seems genuinely up for it. The constantly evolving versions of many his best loved songs is a real treat of which a driving Hard Rains A Gonna Fall and a storming Hurricane are just two of the many highlights. A two track bonus DVD is also part of the package (I haven't watched it yet) but it features Isis and both performances have been lifted from the Renaldo & Clara film. Also included is a booklet with a history of the Revue and some great photos of the tour. With a fair helping of material from Desire and Blood on the Tracks and a healthy smattering of his older tunes this could almost be a Greatest Hits package played live and loud. A real sense of a good old knees up played with a great sense of humour and enthuthiasim. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value, 5 Dec. 2003
An enjoyable documentary from the States that traces the history of all five Marx Brothers (six if you want to be pedantic). The quality of the film footage is variable and not just due to the age of the film. The movie footage is mainly centered around the original theatrical trailers which are curio's in themselves (you should should own all the films anyway). Otherwise the interviews of Groucho and Chico are revealing and rare footage of the brothers is fascinating and at for £9.99 is an absolute steal. Highly recommended to fans and anyone with a passing interest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Pierce, 22 Sept. 2003
This review is from: Amazing Grace (Audio CD)
Brought this on Friday just gone, and have not stopped listening to it. On first hearing, a little disjointed between the Garage and Gospel. Second listening the true beauty of the songs harsh and soft started to permeate out. Third listening, totally immersed, again.
Spiritulized and Pierce have consistently been the best band of the past decade and this album got me to dig out my copies of Pure Phase, Laser Guided Melodies, ...floating in space and Let It Come Down. Put together it is an incredible canon of music, individually evry album is a potent soundscape with incredible imagination
4 stars for the album
5 stars for the band.
Mr Spaceman, please don't ever come down.

Why I've only just happened upon this album I do not know. It must be ranked alongside Love's Four Sail & The Flying Burrito Brothers's Gilded Palce Of Sin as one of the most criminally overlooked albums of the last 40 years. Sunshine, Beach boy harmonies knitted to jazz flavoured song structures astride unusual and emotive lyrics. If you love good music, make that GREAT music, buy this album and spread the word, music this good deserves to be heard.

5.0 out of 5 stars THRILLED..., 25 April 2003
This review is from: One Horse Town (Audio CD)
I happened upon a televised live performance on MTV2 last night that has got me as musically excited as when I first heard Slanted & Enchanted over ten years ago. Considering so many bands are desperatly trawling through Seventies 'dirty' rock to find a niche, The Thrills have taken a subtle mix of Beach Boys, Burritos, Velvets, Young, Byrds... you get the idea, and stamped it with their own style and unique flavour and I for one find them a very exciting prospect. Whether they have the 'cool' credentials to become as big as The Strokes etc. we'll have to wait and see but for me it's enough that there's still such a high quality of music out there. Check them out, you won't be disappointed.
