The Populist Radical Right: A Reader (Extremism and Democracy)
The Populist Radical Right: A Reader (Extremism and Democracy)
by Cas Mudde
Edition: Paperback
Price: £32.39

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent analysis of the new Right populism., 24 Aug. 2017
Cas Mudde is one of the leading analysts of populism. His classic article, "The Populist Zeitgeist" helped establish a critical benchmark for a clearer understanding of populism as a modern phenomenon. Ignore the review by Frederick S who wishes to see populism and the radical right as two separate groups in this book. The title and text is explicit that this is about the Populist Radical Right. There are grounds for the development of a text on the Populist Radical Left, such as in Greece or possibly Corbyn's Labour Party in the U.K. But this book clearly, and excellently, covers Radical right populism.

5.0 out of 5 stars More value than first appears!, 17 May 2015
Ignore the one star review. Yes, there are just 4 blu-Ray discs, but because of the amount of data these discs hold there is a total of 970 minutes! That 16hrs of Shostakovich magic! (8 DVDs)

5.0 out of 5 stars Pavol Breslik Schubert, 25 April 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an excellent rendition by Pavol Breslik. I came across a review of this version in the Guardian which can be read at http://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/apr/02/schubert-die-schone-mullerin-cd-review . That review tempted me into buying, what is my third version of this lieder cycle. I wasn't disappointed. It is much lighter than the Matteus Goerne version, but they provide contrasting interpretations which are well worth owning.
As seems to be the case recently the review prior to mine, and the review taken from the U.S. Amazon site are not about this disc. Don't worry, it is not accompanied by guitar!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait., 21 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a superb edition in line with Angela Hewitt's masterful interpretations of Bach. She has taken a long career of concert performances and recordings of Bach to finally get around to the Art of the Fugue and it has been worth it. She maintains a beautiful melodic line throughout. There is always a feeling of lightness of touch where necessary allied to strength and tension in other passages giving clarity of purpose to the whole.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bite the bullet, 8 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was rather daunted by the price when I first saw this reviewed and then saw a copy in a bookshop. £50 did seem rather a lot even for 2.5k pages. However, when Amazon brought the price down by about £20 I took the plunge. On dipping in and out of this book I can now say that the original price was still worth it. This is a marvellous insight into a great mind which flows over so many different topics with grace and confidence. Even the sections where the sentences are long and rambling are revealing of Leopardi working through a particular train of thought in a diverting way. The publishers are bringing out a paperback in September 2014, but I would advise that you seriously think about buying the hardback. The paper is very thin, but of good quality, and I had the feeling that such a large paperback would begin to fall apart after some reading (although Penguin may decide on a two volume edition to cope with this, I wouldn't bet on it.) Buy and enjoy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bemused reader., 24 Aug. 2013
This review is from: Tampa (Paperback)
I am in the uncertain camp on this one. I have two big, big questions. First, many of the other reviewers refer to Lolita. However, partly due to when Lolita was published it was nowhere near as explicit as "Tampa". In addition, this is clearly not as well written as Nabokov, but I wouldn't say it was a bad as Shades of Grey. Second, would this have found a publisher if the protagonist was male? While I can see the point about exploring female sexuality and the possibility that it is exploding the myth that paedophilia is a male vice, the expected "outcry" has been muted. The author would have been pilloried in every tabloid if they had been male examining the motives of male paedophiles. It's a thought that is hanging in the air when reading this. We should maybe expect some greater concern with the damage done to the teenager in such a book and this fails to get to grips with that aspect of such relationships. Yes, really uncertain but read it for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Isaiah through the war years, 17 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the second book of his letters and Henry Hardy as the main editor of all Berlin's works has done a masterly job. This is essential because Berlin was particularly gregarious and therefore keeping track of all his correspondents is a difficult task. His assessment of people is often both quick and quick witted, so that he can dismiss people as well as take them up as friends for life. The period covered is that of the second world war and so as a Latvian Jew who also knew the history of ideas, including that of anti-semitism in Europe, this period is one of heartbreak and trauma. However, the sheer personality of someone who was often known as one of the greatest talkers shines through in these letters. Enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Film storyboard?, 3 Sept. 2011
This review is from: Headhunters (Paperback)
Really fast moving story. Not as complex as the Harry Hole stories, but a lot of twists and turns to keep you going. It has the feel of something written for a film storyboard almost. They do promote the idea that it will soon be a film, but the small print suggests that this will be made by Yellow Bird and Nordisk films. These are the people who made the 26 Swedish Wallander films seen over the past couple of years on BBC4, so hopefully this means an excellent bit of Scandinavian Noir.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read the Amazon details!!, 8 Jan. 2011
This review is from: Headhunter (Perfect Paperback)
The above reviewers need to read Amazon's information before buying. They would have seen the translator's name is German and that in the details giving the ISBN it states clearly that the book is indeed in German and the publishers are German. No fault can be applied to Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eagerly awaited, 23 Oct. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This has been eagerly awaited after hearing the Ebene perform the Debussy and the Ravel live at this summer's Salzburg Festival. They are a young group of musicians who also appear on the European jazz scene. This brings to their playing a buzz which may be linked to their ability to improvise freely. However, when playing these pieces there is a discipline evident in their interpretation as well. Hear also their interpretation of the first three Barok Quartets and sublime live recordings of Haydn.
