5.0 out of 5 stars I'm the monkey in charge of the bananas, 3 April 2016
This little device right here, I just take a little blow and it tells me when it's time for a little top up! When I first got this I used to ride it around 0.20, but now I leave it at 0.12 which is perfect. It's right in the slot, just past the click. Oh, look at that, 0.10, time for a little drinky-poo! Time to go up another floor.

Bad Lieutenant was for me at the bottom of a long list of films to watch for quite sometime, i'd seen Ferrara's debut feature, The Driller Killer and was rather disappointed.

Now I have thankfully watching this teriffic film about Catholic guilt and redemption.

Many people have complained about the extreme nature of the film, but without this the huge contrast needed would have been lost. that said, it can be a difficult watch and you will probably feel a little dirty after watching it.

Harvey Keitel gives a superb performance as the title character, he is very raw and very emotional, drawing you in uncomfortably close to his world. but you can't help but feel at times that he is some level above the abilities of the rest of the cast, not that they are bad, it's just the raw power of Keitel's performance does tend to overshadow his supporting cast.

Ferarra's direction is typically raw, sometimes feeling a little sloppy, as the story does have a tendency to wander, although it all draws together by the end and your not left wondering what a scene was all about, the roughness of the film does lend it a certain realism and has an ability to be more personal that often gets lost in bigger budget productions.

I won't bother going into the details of the story, some of the other reviews and the Amazon synopsis have covered that.

In closing, this is an amazingly powerful and personal film from Ferrara, exploring his own life and feelings of guilt growing up in a catholic neighbourhood, with some great performances all round, but due to the nature of some of the content it unfortunately won't be for everyone.

I'll get it out of the way now, i am a huge Herzog fan, so i'm sorry if i may seem a little biased at times.

I put on this DVD knowing little about it, the way i usually like to go into a film. it opens in a typically Herzogian fashion, Lynch fans may say Lynchian, but i'll stick with what i know best and what with Herzog being in creative control, and knowing the mans history for control on set i'd say Lynch had very litle to do with the finished product, other than making sure it got to a distributor, but I digress, it opens in typical herzog style, long shot of a passing train, music, cut straight to our detectives talking in their car.

No time is wasted and the story very quickly gets to where we will be spending the rest of the movie, aside from scenes covering the back story.

i'm not going to say much about the story itself as i personally don't like to know anything much about a film before i watch it, maybe a little basic story, but that's about it.

In short it is The story of Brad, played by the very talented Michael Shannon, a persistant "manchild" who lives with his overbearing mother, played by typically offbeat Lynch regular Grace Zabriskie, he is a gifted actor, but becomes rather obsessed with a role in a Greek tragedy he is rehearsing, leading to him slaying his mother with a sword.

The rest of the film is flashbacks leading upto and helping to explain, the tragic events.

The whole cast is very good, especially Michael Shannon, as Brad, and Chloe sevigny as his girlfriend. Willem Dafoe plays it fairly low key as one of the detectives and Herzog regular Brad Dourif gets to be wonderfully over the top as Brads Bird farming Uncle.

Many moments make it feel like Herzog is referencing his past films, The scenes in Peru bring back memories of Aguirre and Fitzcarraldo, the Dwarf and the baby horse can't help but conjour up memories of Even dwarfs started small. and even a mention of chickens in any Herzog film in any context will always bring back images of the end of Stroszek, and lastly Herzog's takes that go on that little bit longer than the cast expects, usually reserved for his documentaries have a place in this piece.

In closing if you like Herzog you can't go wrong, and i'm sure that Lynch fans, going by what Lynch fans have said in reviews, will find something here to like too.

Sorry for any typos, spelling or grammatical errors... it's late.

4.0 out of 5 stars Should be famous, the film that is., 3 Jan. 2010
This review is from: Infamous [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
A much better biopic covering the 5 years of Truman Capote's life dedicated to the writing of "in cold blood", the fantastic non-fiction novel.
Toby Jones portrays Capote in the way he was, Bitchy, flamboyant and the centre of attention where ever he was, much unlike Phillip Seymore Hoffmans dull, lifeless and rather depressing depection, not sure why he got the oscar.
As far as the film itself goes, this is the more historically accurate, with the years and times events occurred all fitting together. It is the more fast paced of the two and benefits from this, as it never seems to lag or get boring.

All in all a great cast and crew put together a fantastic movie, and if it sparks more interest in the author, then it is a well spent 2 hours of anyone's time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful Japanese drama, 3 Jan. 2010
Fantastic movie set in the last days of the Tokugawa-shogunate, it is about a Samurai split between his loyalty for his family in the famine striken north and his duty to his shogun. Mocked for his mercenary way of getting money to send to his family, but respected for his swordsmanship, and loyalty to his master.
This is a very moving film, with great acting from the whole cast, and wonderful cinematography,
I high recommend this film to anyone with an interest in Japan or even just dramas.

A story about bourgeois guilt of the tragic French/Algerian conflict in 1961 and racial tensions in and around Paris that persist to this day, And unearthing the dark secrets behind the glossy veneer of an otherwise picture perfect family.

A very good thriller, long drawn out shots intensify an already creepy air.
Be prepared to have a lot of unanswered questions at the end. it can be a little frustrating at times, but it is oddly a truly satisfiying experience.

Michael Haneke continues to stand out as a true individual in mordern cinema.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Analysis of evil, 3 Jan. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'll keep this short and to the point.

Possibly the greatest living auteur, Michael Haneke keeps getting better.
Not fast paced, not obvious, no one to root for, but all these things make it a stronger work, keeping us as outsiders unable to have a say in the horrors around the corner.
The anticipation for a solution to the strange events is palpable and that there is not one make the film truly unforgettable.
A moody analysis of evil and the sins of the father.

Highly recommended.

...Marking Wong Kar Wai's english language debut and Norah Jones' acting debut, this is not an astounding movie but it is very close to it. Great performances from the whole cast, Rachel Weisz and David Strathairn really stand out. Fantastic cinematography from Darius Khondji, and an almost perfect soundtrack really set the mood. i highly recommend this movie for fans of Wong Kar Wai's other works and anyone looking for a visually stunning piece of mood cinema.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slicker than Micheal Mann and smarter than Bryan Singer, 27 Sept. 2006

A movie like this can only be described one way, perfect. A story smarter than The usual Suspects, and visual style in the league of such films as Heat and Goodfellas. This is a film that has made new actors stars and current stars legends.

This film marked a major change in Hong Kong Cinema Which for the last few years had been churning out lame comedies and action movies that were poor at best. When infernal affairs came out it was at the end of a very bad year for Hong Kong Cinema, it broke box office records beating off films like Harry potter and Spiderman. As you can guess it was the kick start their industry needed, the two sequels proved just as popular.

The movie is about two characters - Ming the triad mole who has become an inspector in the police, played brilliantly by Andy Lau. And Yan an undercover police officer in the mob, played by Tony Leung in a near career high. - And the parallels and moral obstacles in their lives.

The supporting cast includes stars such as Anthony Wong and Eric Tsang along with rising talents Shawn Yue, Edison Chen and Chapman To.

This is not only an important Hong Kong film but internationally also, it has influenced many recent films namely American remake The Departed by Martin Scorsese, I highly recommend this to all movie lovers.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Onk Bak of car movies!, 27 Sept. 2006
This movie contains some of the best racing scenes put to film, and the fact that it was all done by real drivers and not computer generated makes it all the more impressive. having read the manga to I was a little sceptical at first as to whether the characters would translate to film, but disappointed I was not, the lead (Tak) was played perfectly by musician turned actor jay Chou, he puts across tak's indifferent attitude to racing and constant tiredness (due to late night deliveries) very well. Tak's father, Bunta, is played by the always entertaining Anthony Wong in his eleventh outing with director Andrew Lau and fourth with Alan Mak. Shawn Yue, Edison Chen, and Chapman To also from previous films with the directors also make appearances.

The soundtracks both the original and the English compliment the movie well, although the English one does have a tendency to intrude in certain parts of the film.

the only real let downs for me are the editing which can seem a little to erratic and choppy, and the love story part of the film because unlike the Manga it does not play that much a part of the story and could have just as well been left out. Either that or been included fully in to the story.

Neither of these flaws however makes the movie bad or unwatchable, and I would happily recommend this movie to anyone with or possibly without an interest in cars or exciting fast paced movies. Obviously it's not art but it's top entertainment and well worth the money.
