2.0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware., 5 Jun. 2016

This had the potential to be a great book. Three things fail it. The first is the solipsism of the author in believing that the earliest extant manuscripts must be the most accurate: this is a reliance on happenstance. It could equally be argued that the most accurate codices have been lost because they were the most used and disintegrated. Modern scholarship in general takes the whole extant repertoire of copies, and does not just rely on age alone. This failing is underpinned by the author’s second idiosyncratism in his belief that Matthew is the first of the gospels to be written and that it was written in AD 41 because the early Church Fathers believed it. They also believed there were four Gospels because there were four corners of the earth. So each of these early alternative versions from the Peshitta, a pre-Vulgate Latin Bible and four Greek papyri are actually chosen because he has a fundamental and literalist view not only the biblical text but also of early Christian writing. Nothing could be further from the truth — the early Fathers were not writing history, but historiography, either as hagiography, kerygma and for denunciation of alternative viewpoints. There is clear evidence that Matthew is written much latter (see Baucker) and indeed after the destruction of the Temple. Likewise Mark has to have written in Latin, because Peter was in Rome and as Mark was writing down Peter’s memories it had to be in Latin. You get the fallacious drift …. The third failing is that we only have the English translations of the author (although with notes which are meaningless without the original texts). The lack of original texts, even in transliteration (for Syruac and Greek) means we are relying on the (mis-?)assumptions and pretextual beliefs of the author. I should have been prepared to be disappointed as the author has to self-promote his academic credentials — a work should stand on its merit and value, not that of the author. Buyer beware.

Only 4-star because you cannot put the Lego pencil sharpener in the case! Otherwise much enjoyed and used by my five-year old starting school.

3.0 out of 5 stars Stream of Consciousness Uncritical account, 14 Nov. 2014

A very strangely presented book, no maps, no index — like a dream of consciousness writing. A very uncritical account of Assyrian history, accepting the biblical record at face value. For its price and range I have awarded it three stars, being generous.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slow-paced but engaging classic crime novel., 19 Sept. 2014

An interesting period piece — I had to Google the differences between Bank of England and Treasury notes — in a part of the country I now live in: Cornwall. Very much a deductive detective story with an array of characters, sketched rather than fully-fleshed, but nevertheless providing the necessary misleading clues and cul-de-sacs before the final dénouement. The real detective of the piece is the rotund parson of the parish, but we see everything through the local constabulary inspector assigned to the case. Nicely paced, well-written and with an implicit logic underlying the murder. Starts with a physical storm, all thunder and lightning, and at the disclosure a repressed emotional and psychological trauma within the actual killer. A recommended read for a leisurely evening or a sunny day (on a Cornish beach, perhaps?).
