4.0 out of 5 stars A good thriller in the new Mayfair, 23 April 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Andrew Martin has produced a nicely written thriller in The Yellow Diamond. The characters are well-drawn, the plot chugs along at a good pace, and tell Mayfair of oligarchs and hedge fund managers makes for an interesting setting. I would like to see Clifford and Reynolds on another outing; they could easily become a franchise for Martin.

There are some quibbles though. First the research isn't perfect - Martin isn't reliable on something as say to check as car prices, for instance, which is grating in a novel about the excesses of billionaires. Second and worse he doesn'the capture the culture clash between the old and new Mayfair well. The sort of Mayfair resident who eats pheasant (only in season, of course) looks down on the burger-and-foie-gras brigade despite being much poorer than them. The fact that most of the area's retailers cravenly cater to the latter only adds to the sense of latent violence on the streets. Finally the last few chapters feel rushed - a better paced denouement would have been more satisfying. These are minor gripes though: the Yellow Diamond is a decent book.

1.0 out of 5 stars So disappointing, 18 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The downwards trajectory of this series sadly continues. The first book was great, and fully deserving of the awards it won. The second was softer, duller, seemingly with less to say. The third is worse. The action isn't gripping, the are no new insights into the old characters and no interesting new ones, and the ending is flat. Even the politics, which was deftly handled in the first book, is preachy here. Clearly the author wilted under the pressure created by the success of Ancillary Justice but that'should no excuse for this poorly-plotted bore of a book.

A great, well-written, exciting thriller. I have nothing bad to say about it.

1.0 out of 5 stars A real mystery, 13 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There's a really good mystery here. Unfortunately it isn't the one the author has thrown together - it is how this book ever came to be published. It has no obvious spelling errors. The book starts and it finishes without leaving any threads hanging. Those are about the only two positive things one can say. Everything else - the descriptive writing, the plot, the characters, the scenario - are really quite bad. Tom Blake himself is one dimensional, and his special skill is both deeply implausible and mis-used. No spoilers, but if he can do what the book assumes he can, then why is he messing around with low level baddies?

I did manage to finish Deep Sleepers, but it left me wanting the time I took to read it back. Your mileage may of course differ, but I would suggest that there are much, much better thrillers than this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Borderline, 13 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)

Cheap but borderline not worth it. On the plus side, some good human characters, a decent plot (albeit with some extremely dodgy science), and some genuine excitement. On the minus, completely unbelievable aliens, some errors of fact, and an awful ending that feels as if the author didn't know how to finish so he just stopped.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really rather good, 13 Sept. 2015

This is an enormous book - long, with multiple strands. It *almost* has enough weight to justify its length, but not quite - losing a 100 pages would improve it. Still, that's carping: it basically works, the plot is highly engaging, and I found myself reading rather more than I had planned just to find out what would happen next. The characters aren't wonderfully drawn, but they are plausible enough, and the scenario was I thought fairly believable. This isn't quite as good as hard sci fi gets, but it is close.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing new, 16 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a reasonable introduction to the issues in robust design, but it is neither well-written nor well-edited. It's rather repetitive, and many of the examples are very familiar - the O rings in Challenger, the Tacoma Narrows bridge, various aircraft disasters - so the lessons aren't fresh. There is a good book to be written on this topic, but it's shorter than To Forgive Design, and more interesting.

2.0 out of 5 stars A bad dea, 16 Aug. 2015

A decent enough piece of hard sci-fi but really, over five pounds for something this short? Very poor value. If it was half the price, I'd give it another star.
