Superb. Looks in detail at what brought lenin back to Russia 100 years ago and what happened, including the fates of all those who accompanied him. Oftern madcap and hilarious, but with the grim undertow of bloody revolution beneath.

Handsome, smart, nice piece of work, protects my iPhone SE from damage or from slipping out of a pocket. And it matches the colour (rose gold) beautifully. Thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant. From first to last., 26 July 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Set in Cork, the story of lives blighted by drink, drugs and murder. But it's also very funny and written with lyric beauty, with memorable characters such as the ould un Maureen, her gangster son Jimmy Phelan, young Ryan who should have been a musician, Georgie the tragic prostitute.. A whole city on every page. Superb.

4.0 out of 5 stars What King David Did Next....., 17 Nov. 2015

This review is from: The Secret Chord (Kindle Edition)
Couldn't put this one down...based on the bible stories of King David, almost certainly a real historical character but one with a flawed history. I think I've have liked it better told from David's POV; restricting it to the minor prophet Nathan dulled the edge a bit. But very enjoyable.

Big, meaty novel about a kind woman and the three illegal immigrants she gets involved with. Heart warming. Loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the TV series, 29 Jun. 2015

Better than the telly, this tells the true story of what women did to keep the home fires burning (and the nation stuffed with jam) during WWII. It's an astonishing history, of ordinary women, banding together and supporting each other in their heroic efforts. Well worth the read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still superb after all these years, 29 Jun. 2015

Still superb.. I re-read it after fifty years, prior to a visit to Greece, and couldn't have chosen a better book. The legend of Theseus and the Minitaur, of Ariadne and what happened on Naxos, told with fierce devotion to the sources, but conveying the power, fear and comradeship of the times. Settle down and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The history of how they got it right (or at least, made a lot of progress)., 29 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An extraordinary sweep through the development of economics in the last 50 years, by the man responsible for many of the changes. For someone like me who did an economics degree in the 1960s and who found much of it dull and theoretical, and who kept muttering "But real people aren't like that" as lecturers droned on with their diagrams, this is a breath of fresh air! It's written with a wry sense of humour and a deep humanity. Thank you Richard Thaler.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still a terrific read. It may have been written for young ..., 16 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Eagle of The Ninth (Paperback)
Still a terrific read. It may have been written for young readers, but few of us today have the detailed knowledge of the Romans in Britain common in the 1950s, so this is a real voyage into the unknown, and still worth adults tackling with pleasure. After a slow first couple of chapters it gathers pace, and as soon as Marcus starts on his journey north it becomes very exciting. Recommended.
