This review is from: City Of Joy (Paperback)
I have experience of rural India but only visited a couple of the larger cities.l have also come across such icredible humane people like Dominique Lapierre, albeit they had very little financial backing to start with. Such people are living saints to have the courage, detemination and faith in their cause to be able to leave the western world with all it comforts and help the desparately poor, lame and ill.
This is India in the raw but without the smell, heat, dirt(filth) and feel the discomfort of hunger and bugs..
A wonderful account of a hard life. It would be an eye opener for the idle and disaffected of the western world.

A very good book but if you have not read at least one Arian Bell's trilogy, Corduroy, Silver Ley & The Cherry Tree, I would suggest it is best to.do so. All three are excellent and best read in order.

2.0 out of 5 stars Gibsons Jigsaw Puzzle 'Making Hay.', 15 Jun. 2013

Amazon,
I have always regarded Gibsons puzzles to be of a very good quality and often on par with the best. But this puzzle was definitely below standard. It was badly cut. It was extremely difficult to match the pale sky pieces especially the edge pieces. Some of the 'lobes' were expanded and thus did not fit well or lie flat.
The puzzle arrived sealed and brand new. It has been completed once each by two people and both agree the described faults.
Furthermore the picture is not a Hay Making scene. It shows a threshing machine sacking grain from a corn crop!

I normally expect a Gibsons to be.But not so with this puzzle.

This is an excellent factual book about England between the two World Wars. It relates the real life story of those running and working on the land. A taste of village life and the very begining of the automation that would see the demise of the working horse.
I fully endorse the forward written by the author's well known son, Martin Bell news correspondent and later a trustworthy MP.
A book not to be missed that should be added to the 100 books to be read in a lifetime. I will now read the other works of the author.
If you enjoyed 'War Horse' you will enjoy this amble through the tranquil English Countryside. A thoroughly good read, highly recommended.

The Olive Farm: A Memoir of Life, Love and Olive Oil in the South of France

Author Carol Drinkwater. Also known for her role as Helen Herriot in the TV series All Creatures Great and Small.

If you have an interest in travel, Provence, Olives or admire people who have a dream and go for it do try this book. It gives a fine feel good factor.

If you choose by none of these criterion and you just want a good honest read again I recommend it. It is easy to read, written from the heart and captures the area and its rural customs.

Despite many difficulties renovating a decrept farmhouse, the least of which is little money, a persistent spirit usually ends successfully.

I am now reading the second book of this trilogy.

Story of the victorian campaigns of The Corps of Guides. A thoroughly good read. Some of the extraordinary exploits of this elite fighting unit. These true stories out do Flashman. Had the Corps been composed of all British personnel they would probably hold more Victoria Crosses than any other Corps or Regiment of today! If you have any interest of the Army of the Raj this is a must. Enjoy.

Interesting story of a walk round Spain in the 1930's. The author earned his 'bread' playing his violin by busking, as it is known today. A good insight into how poor some Spanish villagers were. Nevertheless they still retained a generousity to travellers. Such hospitality still exists today, in my experience, especially amongst poor mountain people.
A good follow up to this would be Rory Stewart's account of his walk across Afganistan, titled, The Places In Between.
