4.0 out of 5 stars Fully featured reference tool but don't expect easy read guide, 29 Jan. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Have been a big fan of O'Reilly HTML pocket reference guide and wanted something easily portable as a reference tool for CSS.
AS a concise condense reference tool it's all in there but compared to the pocket HTML guide this ain't so easy reading. The Basic Concepts opening chapter is probably the briefest intros I've ever seen and whilst in fairness covers all you need to know I came away struggling from it's description of inline boxes. This isn't a book that will teach you how to do fancy 3 column layouts etc. but it doesn't bill itself as that. The layout isn't great. This (4th edition) separates the property refence section into 3 group which makes it a pain if you are trying to look something up alphabetically. But every property, value, selector, pseudo class options etc are listed & explained as are the rules.

I'd certainly avoid if you are wanting to learn CSS (try CSS: The missing manual) or wanting to learn how to do certain tasks. But it does succinctly list every CSS attribute and if you know your box model from your font-family and want a pocket reference book this should be up your street

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for school age kids, 18 May 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Jojo Learning Maths (CD-ROM)
Bought this on basis of old computer shopper best buy review. Although over 5 years old still works well and disk 1 installed on windows 7 64bit without a problem. My 6 year old can use it well and is pitched well for the first 3 years of school although might be a bit hard for some at the beginning of reception year (our 4yr old who goes to school in September could use the mouse but couldn't cope with the maths). Gentle engaging story

Doesn't look that dated only downside activity screen doesn't fill all of my 1280x1024 display (still in whole window but black band around). Voice input not bad especially from Lenny Henry

Not bad basic maths game

WD My Passport Essential SE 750 GB Metallic Red Portable Hard Drive (USB 3.0/2.0)
WD My Passport Essential SE 750 GB Metallic Red Portable Hard Drive (USB 3.0/2.0)

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice portable HDD for the money, 18 May 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bought this as a portable HDD to backup files from my PC. Using over USB2 so can't comment on USB3 speed but certainly seems much faster than my existing WD external HDD (desktop type). I haven't used the built in backup software and don't plan to so can't comment on that but drive password protection is encrypted (we use similar protection at work)

Cheapest for it's type I could find (wanted to future proof with USB3). Only downside is the cable which isn't generic but you can get replacements for £10 on ebay and plastic shell. No case but that is common and wouldn't have stopped getting 5*

5.0 out of 5 stars Works with my DMC-TZ7, 1 Sept. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This battery comes in at around a third of the cost of the official infamously chipped Panasonic own brand battery. It worked perfectly with my TZ7 and charger which is the most important thing given the infamous chipping.

Haven't had long enough to comment on how good it is at retaining charge after a dozen or so uses but performance almost as good as dedicated battery. It has same amp rating and over a ten day period took 133 photos and HD video clips (some over 10mins)before ran out. There has also a huge amount of playing things back before this. The panasonic battery is only rated for taking about 300 pics on one charge in a lab test so this performance is very similar in real world. Only worry was how quickly fell off on day 10. About day 5or 6 went to 2/3 charge bars and held there til day ten. Fell to 1 bar and within 10 pics battery warning came on. In fairness have never let the official battery get to this level of discharge so may be just a feature more of battery indicator on camera

Still a bargain

UPDATE April 2013
2 and half years later this is still working well. After using a few times became apparent that didn't quite have the capacity of the official battery (provides about 80% of capacity of the official) but this hasn't worsened as time goes on and still holds it's charge very well. Still falls off rapidly as I describe above when running out. Given price of the official battery this is a bargain and has proved reliable

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value basic first castle, 14 Jan. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Pleasant if basic wooden castle. Got this for my 3 year old daughter who is a bit castle daft. We didn't want some massive princess style one and she seems quite happy. Easy to assemble and parts fit well together. Fairly robust but we already have had a square of parapet snapped off and one of the tower struts splined during assembly.

Good value for money.

August DVB-T201 PC/Laptop USB Freeview TV Receiver & Recorder - Silver
August DVB-T201 PC/Laptop USB Freeview TV Receiver & Recorder - Silver

4.0 out of 5 stars Cheep & Works generally well with Windows 7 (RC), 17 Oct. 2009
Nice, cheep DVB-T tuner. I downloaded the latest vista drivers from the maker's website and installed those (irritatingly in RAR compressed format - you'll need a rar extractor) but suspect win7 may be able to automatically source 'em. Haven't used the supplied software but working well in windows 7 (RC build 7100 64bit) media centre.

Using plugged into our main antennae got all of locally available channels

Only issue is that glitch driver means using remote control leads to my keyboard switching to a hot-key mode that I can't get out of without rebooting but don't actually need it

overall good value, does what it says and can work on win7

Paris (Lonely Planet City Guides)
Paris (Lonely Planet City Guides)

2.0 out of 5 stars New Edition (7th) Badly laid out & difficult to use, 15 Jun. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
We bought this to replace our ageing but excellent 4th edition. Sadly someone has decided to change the layout making this one hard to use. The general info (transport, money, safety issues has been moved to the back and isn't clearly laid out. The contents is actually hard to find and the index at the back is divided into confusing sections that frequently miss things that are in this book. The book has lots of nice colour pics at the front but this hides the contents.

There is no obvious quick highlights guide to leap to (do you really need one with Paris ?- but would have saved having to leaf through index to find the highlights individually). Whilst the areas maps have been maintained in the book they're mono-colour now and whilst the book has a handy pull-out larger map this has only copy of the metro routes and can easily get separated from the book.

The data remains good it's the dog's dinner of a layout that lets it down

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to Paris if you Have kids, 11 Jan. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Wonderful little book that details a range of things for all ages of kids from the obvious like the Eiffel Tower to (much more importantly) lots of thing that are great for kids that aren't on the obvious tourist routes or books (I worked in Paris some years back and lots of things I never existed were listed). Written from a parents perspective with great helpful details & hints about each of the 68 including good child friendly places to eat.

Although covers lots of little secrets very well not snobbish about the well known places and again gives excellent advice. A must if going to to the city of lights with kids

3.0 out of 5 stars About average for money, 11 Jan. 2009
Got this to replace failed LG PVR/DVD recorder

Set up was easy and menu options are relatively straight forward however the EPG isn't that user friendly but works and can do series record. Menus look a bit odd (? because we're using a CRT TV not LCD/Plasma). Does seem to produce a slightly soft image but haven't had tuning problems that others describe as our signal is relatively poor. Have had for 3 weeks and has locked twice which required switch off at wall but thankfully not during recording (this seems to affect many machines and certainly seems like our old ITV digital box in this regard)

Annoyingly will play your next recording during HDD playback when you've finished watching one program. Obviously single DTV tuner but this is as expected at money. Not that used but has full HD upscale and for me quite imprtantly both USB and Firewire in.

Not awful but not great. If buying again I'd get another model but is working for me

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value for money but need priming & noisy, 11 Jan. 2009
PROS
-Cheap, looks good
-Delivers good espresso

CONS
-noisy
-vibrates +
-non brass filter holder
-needs priming

I'm on my third week of using this and as the other reviewers have posted this does deliver excellent espresso from ground coffee. However you do need to prime the system first by running water through (the quick start & the manual supplied differ re this), but the system is considerably less than a self priming model and in some ways I quite like the ritual.

The machine looks stylish, compact and good in Gun metal. As with many machines has the "cup warming" area which really doesn't work (but that's an issue for machines costing over double too). I suspect the stainless steel EC330s is the same machine if you prefer a shiny styling. It is noisy in operation but that has been my experience with cheaper machines including Gaggia. Like others it vibrates and moves quite a bit too which irritates. Filter holder is aluminium not brass as is common with cheap machines

Didn't find the pods great in taste but then again if you want that sort of thing you're better off looking at a dedicated single serve machine like Nespresso (assuming you want espresso style coffee). I haven't use the milk frother.
