5.0 out of 5 stars A new voice speakin in Canadian noir, 15 Aug. 2017
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Now this is something clearly different. Firstly, for me, this is the first book I have read set in Vancouver; Canada. A very different city to any I know, and this is not the prosperous Canadian city but rather the dark side of it and all its seedy back streets and low life swerving the narrative into noir territory.

The "heroine" Nora Watts is skilfully introduced to us piece by piece like a jigsaw puzzle, we have to construct her and Sheena Kamal is brilliant at withholding essential pieces until she is ready and like the matryoshka Russian dolls no sooner do we think that we have got the piece in the right pace we discover that we are into the next set of puzzles. The book is positively interactive and very very engaging.

The premise appears to be a simple one but hold on this is not your regular linear narrative here. Wrongly, oh so wrongly, the book has been compared to other contemporary feisty heroines ~ ignore these for Nora Watts is something quite different and refreshingly new. Yes she is a flawed human being, abused and betrayed but there is something about her femaleness that sets her very much apart form other women in current crime fiction.

This will not disappoint any reader looking for a new experience; the tension mounts like a Hitchcock film (yes, this would make a great movie) snf the creepy characters, untrustworthy, will take you on a great literary adventure.
Highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful plaque to grace any wall, 9 Aug. 2017
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This very elegant and finely finished plaque would grace many a wall from grandma's parlour to a student bedsit pad.
It has an historical feeling about it and depicts a goddess with an angelic cherub on her hip, they fly through s delicate Wedgewood blue sky scattering flowers; it really is a bit classy.

It can hang from two nails as the fixings are on the back for this; it is quite a heavy number, so test it out for security.
It would make a charming anniversary or wedding gift
The size of a dinner plate it might well grace a bedroom wall; it truly does have that kind of ubiquitous quality and could well influence the redecoration of any a new abode.to complement its dreamy blue and cream colour scheme

4.0 out of 5 stars maintain that holiday tan, 9 Aug. 2017
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Looking for a way to keep that wonderful tan going when you get back to the city after that fabulous holiday in one of the hot spots?? Look no further than this delicious treat to keep the pallor out of the office.
Minetan (great Euro name) is just the product you're looking for, it comes in a very use to use squeezy canister, it foams and rubs into the skin without staining, it feels very luxurious, almost edible!
It is quickly absorbed into the skin and truly within an hour you will see a wonderful olive glow appear on your skin. We have so far only used it on arms and legs to evaluate the effect before going to the face, which is always more drastic whatever product you us; the sun itself does something different to the face...
But hey, give it a go, it does not stain or streak, it is odourless and so far the result are spectacular

My Sister: A gripping psychological thriller with a shocking twist
My Sister: A gripping psychological thriller with a shocking twist
by Michelle Adams
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars not such devoted sisters = a thrilling read, 8 Aug. 2017
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The only real clue that this is a first novel is that it is so bursting with story; the ideas and characters have been waiting to be birthed and the result is this brilliant, heart-racingly pagegeturningly little gem.

Michelle Adams acknowledges her literary sisters that have made the book possible ~ I can imagine a shelf of books that she has lovingly collected ~ there is an Austenian attirude, a long line of women writers who owe Jane a great deal; there is a Bronte stance ~ it has a solidity that is unwavering even in the face of impossibilities; there is a whiff of du Maurier in the retrospective hold the past has on the present, and I was even charmed to fancy a little Hodgson Burnett in the evaluation of the sisters struggling with a mystery that may or may not destroy their relationship forever.

The gothic setting of the book is a large house in the wilds of Scotland; a dead mother waits to be buried and the warring sisters Elle and Irini pick over the scabs of their childhood under the unwatchful eye of a distant father.

What is the mystery so buried in this dysfunctional family who have more secrets than most?
Why was one sister favoured over the other and who is telling the truth.
This really is a gripping psychological mystery novel that ticks all the boxes ~ a great summer read too

4.0 out of 5 stars Gus and the closeley obseved trains, 6 Aug. 2017
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
In this bewildering 21st century when new levels of technology seemed to be achieved daily, new technotoys are on the market quicker than new cars, we seem to have overlooked the basic humanity of simple communication. We "communicate" with all our new smart toys but the basic human need to understand another human being has kind of got lost along the way. we are certainly more intimate with machines than we are with folk. We carry our machines around in our pockets and have the world, apparently, available to us at the touch of a button; a few thumb taps.

For Judith Newman maybe the machine in the pocket or on the desk is the saving of Gus, her autistic twin son. In this very revealing book she is constantly searching for a reason for Gus's autism. the twins were born to ageing parents, one Henry is not autistic the other, Gus is indeed almost as autistic as can be with his repetitive activities, his sing song echoing conversations, needless to say both the boys are loved equally and yet it is Gus that Judith spends this book on.

There has been so much research on autism since the last century and the obvious conclusion is that there is really no single reason why a child should be autistic any more than it be left-handed and that every individual is as different as any other; each autistic child needs its own autobiography !

Amusingly the author/mother quotes many famous people on the autistic spectrum from Einstein to Tim Burton, not simply for justification but as examples of the wide sweep of this "condition". An incident that jumped out was a visit to the cinema to see "Psycho" now there is a disturbed young man ~ Norman Bates~ beside whom almost any body can look "normal"

I feel sure that this book will be a success and will be of benefit to other moms in the situation of having a child whose lack of response can at times be so disheartening.

A well informed appendix of societies/groups, web sites and a bibliography complete this great new volume

The Other Woman: The most breathtaking twist of the year
The Other Woman: The most breathtaking twist of the year
by Laura Wilson
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars sn undoubtedly brilliant novel by a thriller writer par excellence, 3 Aug. 2017
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Jealousy, Suspicion & Paranoia are the primary colours in this closely woven tapestry of a novel by the fabulous Laura Wilson. Having read all of her previous books I am well aware that I am in the hands of a wonderful Wordsmith.

Sophie (watchword for Everywoman) is in a primary dilemma being hounded by nasty mail ~ handwritten at that so doubly threatening; electronic mail is so easy to dismiss ~ and her suspicions of the faithfulness of her husband, Leo (generic wild man ?) are aroused and so suddenly every action feeds this emotion

No spoilers here but rest assured that Laura Wilson is going to drag you through the emotional maelstrom like no other; Hitchcock would have liked this and Daphne du Maurier could have scripted it.

From the very first page the reader will be hooked and follow Sophie's doubt and confusion in this master class in thriller writing

4.0 out of 5 stars The magic broom, 3 Aug. 2017
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is the little device I have waited for all my life or so it seems. Its handy lightweight means that at last the stairs can be done ~ I live in a Victorian cottage in Brighton that consists mainly of stairs!!
It is so easy to use and recharges about as long as average battery does then has a life of about half an hour, unplugged. I mean really who needs to hoover longer than that. I am guessing it would be ideal in a car too.
It comes with several "heads" to do those awkward in between places that seem to get dustier than any others
It has two speeds as well so you can really blast that post party debris...
It is easy clean, no terrible bags to dispose of

3.0 out of 5 stars Eye drops to help solve the problem of seasonal itchiness, 2 Aug. 2017
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This little bottle from the Optrex pharmacy range comes with an extensive leaflet concerning its use and should be read most carefully before embarking on the hayfever relief programme. programme.

Applying any product to the eyes takes a little skill, especially if self-administered, and some wastage will normally occur. The user is advised to check out side affects especially if the condition worsens, at which point stop using.

Hay fever is fairly easy to spot, the symptoms are known and regularly advertised at this time of the year; the eye irritation can become almost unbearable more so now than ever before for some (scientific) reason; urban pollution now seems to contribute as much as the free pollen of the countryside used to do ~ maybe it is time for a renaming of this condition!

You know your body and its conditions more than anybody, remember. Dry eyes is now a new and accepted condition as you will know from your eye- test specialist when you go for that all important check up. With the increased use of computers for virtually every occupation, eye strain can be exacerbated and the eyes become more vulnerable to the close up work the computer demands.
The product can be used safely with contact lenses.

Optrex is a reliable brand so use, if necessary, with confidence

5.0 out of 5 stars reassuring myth-busting, 2 Aug. 2017
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I guess like any "lay" person or even student presented with this tome (although paperbacked and pocket-sized) the first think you will do is to look and see if it deals with your own personal anxiety ~ and there is an encyclopaedic choice! from panic attacks to stress levels ; all the modern day inflictions of living in an increasingly incomprehensible 21st century,
From bipolar disorders (lovely new category into which, surely we all fit and have always done so ~ its called individualism isn't it?) to anorexia, body dysmorphia and currently transgender controversies, alcohol and drugs misuse (aren't they natural rites of passage now?) and of course that ols favourite = the autistic spectrum and where you are placed on it.

The authors here have plundered just about every written and statisticised publication/research and without writing cosy little cures have written a book for both the curious and the researcher.

I luckily stumbled upon my own !passion! quite early in the book. I admit it "I am a hoarder" and proud of it. No I don't collect rock memorabilia from the 1970s. I don't have a collection of unopened tins from the second world war. I am not a trekkie not a GOT fan. I hoard books, there I have admitted it. They are my autobiography and my insulation both physical and metaphorical.

I must admit that some of the conclusions that the authors come to in their chapters on addiction etc brought some comfort. We are all addicts to to something; it would appear to be in our DNA, it is only when the addictions begin to replace everyday existence does I become worrisome.
This is an enjoyable and easy to digest volume to be added to the bibliographies of many a students' dissertation on the State of the Nation's Mental Health.

As a self-confessed hoarder I will no longer look on the space as clutter but as an external display of my inner need to learn and to continue to educate myself. So this slim volume will need to find a little shelf space or its won
