good, gripping read that was just right for the beach. Well written, well paced and believable characters. Not read anything by the author before but would again if the price was right!

2.0 out of 5 stars Rubbish, 13 May 2014

This was the second book I read in this series but it was as if I was reading the first one with different characters. They seem to be written to a formula with certain paragraphs just pasted in from other books. The characters are cliched and the plots far-fetched.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read on a rainy day, 4 Jan. 2014

This was a good 'who done it' that kept my interest right to the end. The story moved along at a good pace, was well written and had an interesting twist at the end. The only criticism is that I don't find the characters in this series are developed enough for me to feel that I am getting to know them. All the relationships - both professional and personal - seem superficial and a bit cliched.

The Crooked Pearl (An Atticus Fish Novel Book 3)
The Crooked Pearl (An Atticus Fish Novel Book 3)
Price: £1.00

3.0 out of 5 stars Good story, 23 Dec. 2013

I like the Atticus Fish novels as they tell a good yarn and Shaun Morey writes well in a light, fast paced style. What I don't like is the graphic violence. This does not add anything to the story and for me brings the novels down a notch. Atticus Fish is an odd character - on the one hand an extremely environmentally aware, non-drinking GOOD person but on the other he sure likes hurting people! What I do like about these books is the glimpse of life in Baja California and the Sea of Cortez and the interesting environmental issues they are facing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gem, 5 Dec. 2013

This book was just up my street - I love the writers of the 1920's and this captured the era and style. Such a pity that this is the only book of Stern's still in print because I would certainly want to read the rest.

Basically it is a saga of an extended, European, Jewish, family and spans over 100 years following its marriages, births, relationships and rises and falls of fortune. The women in the family are stronger than the men and the Matriarch of the title connects the characters in the beginning of the story to those about to take the reigns in the 1920's. It is written with style and wit. The style may not, however, appeal to every modern reader and I would recommend trying a sample first

I was gripped by this book with its overlying feeling of danger for the main character. Very clever, with lots of unexpected twists to the plot. A good read.

Cut Short (A DI Geraldine Steel Thriller Book 1)

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Story - not much depth, 20 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I felt that the plot of this book was quite good but there was no depth to any of the characters. Descriptions of emotions were all on the surface and predictable. The style of writing seemed immature and by the end of the book I was getting irritated by the short bald sentences. That said, I enjoyed the story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lost in translation, 30 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I can see that in it's original language this would be at least a 4 star book. Unfortunately, the translation makes it difficult to read and spoils the flow of the obviously witty, satirical writing style. That said it's an enjoyable, clever book with engaging characters.

Dandy Gilver and the Proper Treatment of Bloodstains (Dandy Gilver Murder Mystery Series Book 5)
Dandy Gilver and the Proper Treatment of Bloodstains (Dandy Gilver Murder Mystery Series Book 5)
Price: £4.99

4.0 out of 5 stars entertaining, 28 Oct. 2013

I like this series of books. Not great literature but a light entertaining read. Catriona McPherson writes well and uses the English language beautifully. Her books capture the feeling of the 1920's and in this book we get a glimpse of life in Service and of the effects of the general strike of 1926. As in all the Dandy Gilver books the plot is well thought out and the ending unexpected - although the clues are there for us to find.

I like the relationship between Dandy and her sidekick Alex, who wear their snobbishness lightly and tongue in cheek. You get the feeling that, in different circumstances, there could be more than friendship between the two but Dandy could never be anything else than a proper wife and mother to the dull Hugh and their two sons.
