Heretic: Why Islam Needs a Reformation Now
by Ayaan Hirsi Ali
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Islam is a bewildering slippery fish of a religion for ..., 25 Jun. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Islam is a bewildering slippery fish of a religion for westerners to comprehend, not least because the two mainstreams of belief are fighting a proxy war in Syria. This account takes a frank up-to-date look at the customs and practices in strongholds of Islam and tries to identify the chief stumbling blocks to its worldwide acceptance as a tolerant and inclusive religion. Koranic references and historical events greatly aid the reader's progress in a complex subject. An afternoon's reading will immeasurable advance the reader's comprehension of the forces at work in Islam.

This review is from: Hitler's Bodyguard [DVD] (DVD)
this set of disks contains a lot of documents and photographs from Nazi admin records. The build-up of Hitler's power base in the 1930s is carefully presented and offers insights into the processes which assisted the dictator in his rise to power. The personalities surrounding Hitler are brought to life, some from recorded interviews with former soldiers and airmen. The commentary spoken by Robert Powell gives the narrative pace and tension which might otherwise lag in sustained viewing of archive material. Anyone wishing to understand more of the influences impelling Germany before and during the second World War will not be disappointed viewing this assemblage.

It is difficult to add anything more to the excellent reviews already made of this carefully researched book. In reading it, I was forcefully reminded of the trial of the supposed killer of JIll Dando only to be followed years later by a release from prison and substantial compensation payment. Reminding all of us that miscarriages of justice are still occurrring in high-profile trials and effective restitution is often dependant on a handful of determined individuals willing to doggedly pursue evidence trails overlooked by the police.

An Author Bites the Dust
An Author Bites the Dust

5.0 out of 5 stars This compact volume is in the Scribner Crime Classics series ..., 17 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This compact volume is in the Scribner Crime Classics series and can be read in an afternoon and evening to fully appreciate the deroulement of the ingenious plot. Upfield's Napoleon Bonapart detective is launched on an enquiry by his boss during a spell of leave. Setting is almost suburban NSW in Australia in a literary milieu. This book may well reflect Upfield's own brush with different cliques of writers in Australia and is quite shrewdly observed adding piquancy to the characters portrayal. Will not say too much about the story but that i found it very enjoyable with touches of humour interwoven with sinister revelations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Series retains its relevance to daily life, 30 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Dixon of Dock Green [DVD] (DVD)
I hugely enjoyed watching the six episodes of Dixon. It took me back to the London of my childhood and stirred memories of places and daily life and a pace of life no longer observable in the city. Jack Warner's recounting of events is invariably very down-to-earth and practical, based in reality . Uncomplicated plots nevertheless grip the attention from the quality of the acting and the close attention to police procedure in resolving potential threats and outright murder. This was a fine series evidenced by its continuing relevance to policing issues today. The episodes are supported by subtitles and the soundtrack is of excellent quality.

Sozali Shaker Bottle 600 millilitre
Sozali Shaker Bottle 600 millilitre
Offered by REMI DIRECT
Price: £2.40

4.0 out of 5 stars Lighten up dreary household chores, 30 Jun. 2014
This shaker bottle is cleverly designed to distribute dry powdery solids in a scatter pattern. An internal baffle prevents too much powder from emerging clumped together. Load the bottle with insecticide powder, air freshener, carpet dry shampoo etc etc. The one drawback with this item is its price - expensive as empty plastic bottles go. If you can find a retail outlet stocking Sozali products you may make a better purchase. I have found the shaker particularly useful for applying cleaning powder to sinks and basins.

I have found the Scribner editions of crime classics to be handy books, not too thick to take on a train or coach trip and generally good print. The Sands of Windee is regarded by many as one of the outstanding stories of Arthur Upfield's outback detective Napoleon Buonapart. Solving the crime appears an impossibility since there was a disappearance but no corpse or live sightings in subsequent months. Buonapart applies his deep knowledge of the bush creatures and shifting landscape to postulate a scenario for death and proceeds to back up his theory with incisive observations of local people and well-chosen dips into archives. The tension mounts to a thrilling race against time across a parched landscape and a very satisfying denouement. A good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars 11thC nobleman doomed to encounter Inspector Adamsberg, 1 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This noted mediaevalist French author has cleverly woven the legend of an accursed Count and his hideous entourage into a modern Normandy landscape and a family with dark secrets in its past. Inspector Adamsberg and his team are drawn into the sinister eddies of a whirlpool generated by simmering local relationships. Readers who enjoyed immersion in the atmosphere of Pars Vite et Reviens Tard by the same author will not be disappointed by this latest adventure in the vein.
