A Golden Age
A Golden Age
by Tahmima Anam

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, liberating novel, 25 Feb. 2007
This review is from: A Golden Age (Hardcover)
From its dramatic opening line 'Dear Husband, I lost our children today.' to its startling conclusion, Tahmima Anam's first novel, A Golden Age, is the moving story of one woman's life during Bangladesh's War of Liberation, and the lengths to which one is willing to go for the people they love. I hesitated to read this at first, fearing I'd read too much of the same lately, but the comparisons to Ali and Smith are worth it only in terms of the quality of the writing. Anam has a voice all her own and one I look forward to hearing more from in the future.

The Solitude of Thomas Cave
The Solitude of Thomas Cave
by Georgina Harding
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Man Vs His Nature, 24 Feb. 2007
TSOTC is beautifully written novel set in the Arctic in August 1616. Thomas Cave, a quiet thoughtful seafarer, finds himself at the centre of a wager that leaves him on his own and battling the arctic wilderness for a year with little more than basic provisions. What starts as a book about Man vs Nature evolves into a book about Man vs His Nature, and I was painfully aware of the modern parallels.

The prose is measured, but not manipulative. Author Harding fluently weaves together the psychological and physical elements that claw for Thomas Cave's attention and insinuate themselves as truth, with or without proof. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blueprint for 21st Business, 14 Feb. 2007
Highly recommended for business leaders and sme's looking for a guide on what's important and necessary for 21st century businesses. Great context and examples provided. Well written and engaging, backed by solid research. Very impressed and frankly pleasantly surprised given the poor quality business guides on the market these days.

A Lifetime Burning
A Lifetime Burning

5.0 out of 5 stars You know it's a good book when you can't get the characters out of your head..., 5 Jun. 2006
This review is from: A Lifetime Burning (Paperback)
In Flora Dunbar, author Linda Gillard has created an achingly memorable character in one of the most emotionally wrenching novels I have read in recent literature. A Lifetime Burning contains an ark of human relationships, some more acceptable than others, but all entwined with great sensitivity and credibility. A truly remarkable read -- a cut above most forgettable novels written these days.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great summer reading for everyone, 12 Jun. 2005
Heard Forgotten Dreams rated highly on Open Book as part of a programme on Transita fiction for women over 45. Whether you are interested in fiction for this age group or not, this book is a great summer read for anyone, male or female, over 45 or under. A fast-paced mystery that links present day Aborginal Australia with 5th century Rome, it was written by Doris Leadbetter, a highly-respected Melbourne poet who died of bone cancer late last year. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Compilation, 5 Dec. 2004
What's not to like about this CD? It's just what you need when you want to remember the best and the worst of your love life the past decade or so. Seal's voice is just gorgeous. He takes you through, in and around every heart ache you've ever had...scrumptious.

4.0 out of 5 stars A friend recommended I look at this..., 24 Sept. 2004
Because my friend knew I was thinking about property investment, but didn't know where to start. I don't know why she mentioned this one, other than maybe she recognised Annie Hulley's name, but no matter, the book is just what I needed to motivate me. There's some interesting anecdotes from Annie Hulley's personal experience, but more importantly, lots of information you need to understand about the basics of property investment like taxes and legalities to how to buy at auction and where the investment hotspots are now, including Croatia (the next big place to invest abroad by all accounts). If you're looking for a starting point in property, this should inspire you to take the leap and give you the confidence to start investing sensibly for the future.
