Margaret Drabble is a very competent novelist and it is a delight to read her prose-however,this story was just a little too long for me.

This is a beautifully illustrated copy of the play-if you love Arthur Rackham, you will love this book.
The play is enhanced with these illustrations, I think.
Magical.

Enjoyed it enormously-characters were so well drawn and there is humour too. Amazing how convoluted the legal system was then.

Quite interesting re the dental practice and all his social angst, but did tend to drag a bit with all the religious detail.
Certainly makes you take dental flossing more seriously!

A Tale of Two Cellos is beautiful., especially the playing of the haunting Little Beggar Boy by Piazzolla. This is a lovely CD to have as background music but also to listen to in its own right.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally addictive Goldfinch, 14 July 2014

It is a long time since I picked up a book and could not put it down! Usually I avoid long books but with the Kindle you start reading something without realising the full length. Having said that, this book was totally absorbing, captivating, humorous at times and sad at other times. I have heard some critics say that it is a book for children and I would disagree. I agree that the first part is written from a child's point of view and then as a teenager and so on as the narrator grows up. The skill of the author is that she can tell the story the way a boy would see things at different stages of his life. The main characters are so well drawn that I could imagine them all and even actors who could take the role if necessary! I read this book over about 5 days and it is no exaggeration to say that I felt bereft when not reading it and finding out what happened next.
I do not want to give away any of the secrets as part of the charm is being shocked at another turn of events and another twist in the tale, so all I can say is read it for yourself...preferably on a long flight or holiday when you do not have to feel guilty about reading constantly. I can assure you that you will be addicted to this book from the very beginning!
