The Aquariums of Pyongyang: Ten Years in the North Korean Gulag
The Aquariums of Pyongyang: Ten Years in the North Korean Gulag
Price: £5.69

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredible life story., 20 Mar. 2015

At the age of 9 the author of this book is sent to a North Korean labour camp with some members of his family. He manages to survive in this horrific place in spite of his constant hunger and in spite of the fact that it is often freezing cold and disease is rife. He is treated very inhumanely. Reading this book has helped me to get an understanding of the situation in North Korea which is quite distressing and very bleak.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of food for thought., 16 Mar. 2015

This novel is about a group of Catholics on a pilgrimage to Lourdes. It is written in alternating chapters from Gillian and Vincent. I enjoyed this format and the fact that the book is not written in linear progression but starts in the middle of the story. I found the story very touching, honest informative and well written. It makes you think of what it means to be human.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely colourful escape into the sights and sounds of India., 22 Feb. 2015

To be honest it was the cover of this book which attracted me to it as a holiday read. Although I have never read any of Sarah-Kate Lynch's books before I will definitely be reading more of her books. Annie decides to accompany her husband on a trip to India even though it does not really appeal to her. Whilst there she comes to love the people and the country, as well as learning a lot about herself, thanks to the people she meets, especially Heavenly Hirani. A great read.

A nice easy read. I liked the story and the way the two parts of the story linked together and loved the descriptions of the olive groves and the long Italian lunches. A great holiday read.

I very much enjoyed reading this book. It is written in such a warm and friendly style that you feel you know some of the characters. I loved the descriptions of the delicious meals and the importance of sitting down together and enjoying each other's company, as well as the descriptions of everyday life in Burgundy and the stories about the house they are renovating.

4.0 out of 5 stars An easy but enlightening read, 21 Jan. 2015
An easy but enlightening read, focussing on the lives of 5 women living in Kabul. It gives a real insight into their day to day existence and culture. I also enjoyed reading the interview with the author who actually did co-own a coffee shop in Kabul!
