4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, 2 May 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I did not have the same problem as the previous review as all the movies in my set played in their entirety. I would rate this as a 3.75 star buy as the value is reasonable and most of the movies are enjoyable to watch. The only movie I didn't like was the first in the set - Birds of Prey, which sent me to sleep.

A good value box set to enjoy a few nights in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!, 2 May 2011
I can't believe I have just recently discovered this album. The tracks are very well put together and very high quality. The songs themselves are all very catchy and in 1 month I have never tired of hearing the bingo call,Jockey's barring, the Three Turns taxi, the trashy women, and the raffle prizes in between. Excellent!

3.0 out of 5 stars All public domain titles, 4 Jan. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This collection totals 15 lesser known Karloff films all available in public domain.
The title on the box says 'frightful' which may lead the browser to believe they are all horror films. In fact, most are crime flicks
Contents are:
The Bells (1929)
Juggernaut (1937)
Mr Wong, Detective (1938)
The Mystery of Mr Wong (1939)
Mr Wong, Chinatown (1939)
The Fatal Hour (1940)
British Intelligence (1940)
Doomed to Die (1940)
The Ape (1940)
Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome (1947)
Sabaka (1954)
The Terror (1963)
Mondo Balordo (1964)
The Snake People (1968)
Dupont Show of the Month: Treasure Island (1960)

Some of the films are barely watchable and have not been cleaned up at all. I rate the films 0 stars (Mondo Balordo - just look it up) to 3 stars out of 5 (The Bells, The Fatal Hour and The Ape)

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!, 30 Nov. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very very special adaptation of this story. The acting is top notch, the scenery is beautiful, the story is constantly riveting and it also makes the viewer think.
If we didn't have such governments ruling local communities from afar, serving their own interests primarily and exploiting the national population, the world would be a much better place. Very idealistic and difficult to mobilise the mass of humanity to achieve it though, unfortunately.

On a side note, I do love it how Alan Breck is always well presented, even after days living rough in the glens.

Most enjoyable dvd I have seen for quite a while.

I'm Off Then: Losing and Finding Myself on the Camino de Santiago

4.0 out of 5 stars It grew on me, 19 Nov. 2010
I wasn't keen on this book at first as the author wasn't a true pilgrim in the sense that he cheated by using public transport and taking lifts off a farmer, and also using expensive hotels rather than pilgrim refuges. However, his style grew on me and I found I became more drawn in and particularly more sympathetic when he gave his opinions on the plight of animals. The conversations he has with people are funny and he depicts characters he met on the Camino well. I don't know why gay people must always proclaim and discuss their sexual orientation so much though, after all, most heterosexuals don't go around telling everyone they are straight.

1.0 out of 5 stars Didn't like it, 19 Nov. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I really didn't enjoy this dvd. After the first 75% of the first episode (The Lakes - very good!)I found the pace too quick and the content very shallow indeed. Nothing was concentrated on to give a subject depth, rather expanse and volume appeared to be the aim. Many of the shots focused far too much on the presenter and not enough on the landscape. The paintings were not given enough discussion and details of artists were too spartan.

This review is from: The Victorians [DVD] (DVD)
I enjoyed this dvd and found a lot of the content to be fascinating. I normally don't like anything with Paxman as I find him too opinionated, particularly after the George Galloway interview after winning a parliamentary seat. However, on this occasion he presents the material well and his love of art is clear.

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat dated, but quite interesting, 19 Nov. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This dvd set consists of 45 minute episodes from The History Channel. The episodes are interesting enough and some of the footage of the disasters is excellent. However, they do show themselves to be rather outdated as some of the huge recent natural disasters are not mentioned at all. For instance the Tsunami dvd describes a couple of fairly minor tsunamis compared to the recent Indian Ocean event.
As the price is low, I would recommend this box set for its footage of times gone by, and the interviews with survivors bring out the terror of these catastrophes.

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear, 19 Nov. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This was a disappointing purchase. We are treated to watching short episodes of a couple of boffins glossing over an area of Anglo Saxon life for a few minutes, before rapidly moving on. The material is very dated, with the filming being done about 20 years ago! The rest consists of a few scenes from an outdoor museum. There is nothing of interest here and I regret this purchase.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wrong reviews here, 19 Nov. 2010
This dvd box set comprises 3 films.
1 - Invisible Ghost
2. - The Corpse Vanishes
3 - Scared to Death

The three films in the set are all just over 1 hour in length and low budget, with fantastic plot holes and quite a lot of dubious acting (other than Lugosi).

My favourite of the three was The Corpse Vanishes as it manages quite a curious Gothic atmosphere and was the closest to the horror category. Invisible Ghost was interesting, although the plot was crazy, while Scared to Death was, I felt, the weakest of the three, in spite of (or perhaps contributory)its colour.

The box set itself is a very cheap production with no extras, no sleeve notes and a very simple printing on the covers. In fact, each dvd invividual box has exactly the same small picture.
