5.0 out of 5 stars Not pop punk but jam-packed full of great tunes!, 14 May 2017

Have all the previous Paramore album so liked them but not as much as MCR, Jimmy Eat World, Fall Out Boy (FOB), Panic! At the Disco (PATD), Good Charlotte, Blink-182 etc who always seemd to me to have better tunes. That has now changed. Although "After Laughter" is far more pop than pop/punk, it is a real pop gem, a throwback to the 80s days of synth pop, with upbeat driving rythyms mixed with slower numbers but pure tunefulness from start to finish. I think it is first rate, and let's face it, their contempories FOB and PATD are now far more pop than rock!

5.0 out of 5 stars The fulfilment of their burgeoning maturity and development over 20 years - Field and Fences, what a song to bow out on!, 23 Jan. 2017

This review is from: Yellowcard (MP3 Download)
The last and best album by Yellowcard, so says All Music and I agree. The usual uplifting pop punk and emo tracks with the unique staccato violin can be found but it is the other tracks that move more into folk and Americana that are both welcome, surprising and brilliant (and why I love the acoustic versions of some of their albums). Leave a Light On and The Hurt is Gone are brilliant but Fields and Fences is a masterpiece- undoubtedly the best song they have ever written and the last. I can really see the band members exploring more of a folk/ alt country path in the future. Let's see.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Classic Rock with a Modern Flavour- and without the plodding drudgery of some modern hard rock bands., 27 Nov. 2016
This review is from: The Last Hero (Audio CD)
No doubt my favourite Alter Bridge album - brilliant vocals, scintillating guitar, catchy tunes and the right mix of heavy and mid tempo rock. AB, The Winery Dogs and The Answer are the best of the modern rock bands that play classic rock with a modern sensibility.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best, most tuneful album yet, 24 Sept. 2016
Was introduced to Joel Plaskett when visiting my Canadian/Scottish relatives in Ontario and Quebec a couple of years ago. Bought most of his albums, and the One, Two Three triple album was my favourite- till now. PAST is full of hummable tunes, with styles ranging from pop, folk, rock, blues and alt country. Lovers of Ryan Adams, Josh Rouse, Cory Branan, Josh Ritter, Jackie Greene etc, will find much to enjoy here. When I Close My Eyes is my favourite track. Would have been a hit if folks outside of Canada had heard of him!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great rock album (just ignore the God-bothering lyrics!), 3 Sept. 2016
Great rock album from Switchffoot. A few real rocking numbers and drums are quite prominent. I ignore the bible-thumping lyrics and focus on the tunes which are great!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brian carries on where The Gaslight Anthem signed off - assured solo album full of hummable tunes., 11 Mar. 2016
This review is from: Painkillers (Audio CD)
Have been anticipating this album for weeks based on the 5 or so songs already released on Spotify. Bought the CD immediately. It doesn't disappoint. The rest of the songs are just as good and "Among Other Foolish Things" are really one of his absolute best and really put a smile on my face as it is so upbeat with a great swing to it. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just getting better and better with age. Classy mix of his usual power pop anthems but with additional welcome flavours!, 19 Feb. 2016

Another brilliant album by Rick. Plenty of great power pop anthems but mixing it up a bit with some newer folk, Celtic and country sounds which can only be a good thing. Wish Bryan Adams would follow Rick's lead in expanding his sound rather than be stuck in the 80s. Can't believe the comments that this is a country album. Absolute rubbish! 9 of the 16 songs are pure typical power pop Rick. In any case, I love The Avett Brothers, The Decemberists, Wilco, Ryan Adams etc. as much as PowerPop so the mix of sounds is very welcome and makes the album more memorable. What do you want- a copy of all is previous albums? This really is Rick at the top of his game and for once All Music Guide finally gives a 4/5 star review for a recent album of his- and about time since the 2 previous ones are equally as good. "Earth to Angel", "Down", "The One", "The Best Damn Thing" and "Light this Party Up" are as good as any rockers he's done in a long time and no country there! Only "All Hands on Deck" is a bit rubbish. Buy it!

Received the CD today and have listened to it all the way through 3 times. Can't understand the so-called DT fans who give this one star. I am a sucker for grand pianos and over-the-top theatrical effects (love Queen, Styx) and don't really like some DT songs that are verging on metal with lots of thudding drums. As this has little of that and just really beautiful orchestral and musical interludes and catchy tunes in between, I put it right up there near the top of DT's discography. I also loved their last album as well for similar reasons. Can't wait to see them at the London Palladium on the 18th Feb where they will play the album in it's entirety. Go buy it!

Top notch album. I prefer Emerson Hart's solo albums to Tonic although I like both. Nobody has mentioned Another Life which I consider once of his best ever songs. Would be a huge hit in a just world. The Lines is also great but really there is not a bad song on this album. Nothing groundbreaking but tuneful light rock that is perfect for a morning drive when you don't want anything to heavy/noisy. Buy it!
