4.0 out of 5 stars nice quality niche drive for its IDE class, 25 Jan. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
nice quality drive, useful for adding the finishing touch to that old, but cherished laptop/tablet (HP TC1100 in this case) that you are clinging onto

admittedly expensive for the storage capacity being bought compared to desktop or even laptop magnetic hard drives, but anyone looking at a drive like this, probably, like me, were just after housing a non-bloated operating system only with the added benfits an SSD brings in an older system with IDE interface only

read and write operations are limited by its own interface (IDE) compared with all the newer sata models, but you will see a small improvement in responsiveness and speed in the majority of tasks, certainly my win7 boot was quicker and has definitely made a noticeable improvement to heat and battery longevity despite naysayers claiming that SSD doesnt actually have battery benefits, well it does here and its not placebo.

this SLC version i am sure will beat the overall performance of the cheaper MLC models, so bare that in mind when you see a larger capacity for the same price or cheaper, remember that MLC can be a disapointment in practise, especially in IDE/PATA where a drive like this has minimal gains anyway - so max out and go SLC for a more reliable and satisfying purchase if you are limited by needing IDE in the first place

two physical things to make mention of, this drive was a fair bit thinner in its height | than the magnetic drive it replaced, so in order to avoid strain on the pins when fitted, i secured a piece of cardboard to its belly cut to size to make it the right height so as to match the previous drive.

also, be careful to avoid inserting the drive upside down, sounds obvious i know, but when the jumper is removed from the two pin set to one side of the SSD drive, it all blends into one in terms of looking down at the jumper/data pins and it will fry your IDE controller and the drive itself, made more confusing by the fact that in my tablet the drive i replaced was upside down in its orientation anyway, so if i had replaced like for like i would have had problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars go on then, another 5 star, 8 Jan. 2010
This review is from: Siamese Dream (Audio CD)
i have owned this album since december 1993, when as a teenager in my penultimate year of high school, the whole 'grunge' thing was underway - i bought the cassette from grey & pinks record store on a trip to town after school - i remember the first time i had to listen to the whole album from start to finish, bizarrely, was on the way to participate in an indoor tennis tournament (ughh), was being driven there by my father, it was raining all the way and dark - the album was so new, fresh and awe inspiring - the track which gave me goosebumps at that time and still does to this day (listening to it right now on cd) is the majestical track called 'Disarm' - truly beautiful - as others have said, the album has no weak links and is a tour de force throughout - very high caliber material indeed

strangely i dont think this album has aged quite as much as some of the other big names from that time, the pumpkins style, certainly on this album transcends eras which are normally easily defineable

a great range of styles from more melodic through to heavy agressive riffs should find its feet with most audiences

thank god i was the right age to stumble upon this gem and still have it to refer to this day

Audio Engine 5- Active Speaker System for iPod & MP3 Players - White

3.0 out of 5 stars great great sound quality but flawed, 21 Oct. 2009
these are superb sounding speakers, with nice build quality inside and out.

in the budget that these are you most likely wont get a better sounding pair

i have the glossy white, and these match my white intel imac down to the ground

however, there is one issue which has plagued me from day one = the auto sleep feature.

now in my opinion they have marred a top quality product and placed it squarely in the realm of gimmikery with this feature

i will pass comment on how this feature affects me...

the audio feed will, without exception goto sleep (turn off) after 10 minutes, now i dont know if its supposed to be ten minutes of inactivity (ie, no audio feed being recognized) but on mine, they do it without fail, even if i am half way through an album

not only does the music go off, it does it with a loud and annoying burst of static noise as it cuts out, enough to give you a start whilst listening to a more relaxed musical choice.

then in order to resume your listening, you have to crank up either the source volume or the volume on the speakers themselves (depends how you have them set up) to a very loud increment so that the active sleep circuitry re-engages, of course at this point after 5-10 seconds, they come back on full throttle very loud, again, enough to give you or your household/neighbours a start this time.

therein lies my one and only bugbear with these speakers, i have emailed audioengine support numerous times and of course, whilst they are helpful and courteous, always provide a long list of other things that may be at fault in the chain, and then proceed to say if you are in the continental united states (which they are, and i am not) then they allude to being able to help some more.

i must say, myself, i am headphone audiophile, and have very decent cables, and source connected up, so what they mention to check is very basic for me, but may prove helpful to others.

at the very least they should have made the sleep feature defeatable, apparently it isnt an option to remove this feature even if i was willing to open them up and do low level things like desoldering - its built in and there to stay.

so basically i am landed with a lovely looking, great sounding (when they are on) pair of speakers which have an ever present annoying trait

my advise would be if you dont mind what i mention above, then i would heartily recommend them for their compact form factor and bang for buck SQ

although had i known before hand that the auto sleep feature would engage even with an audio feed loud and clear, i would not have purchased them

3.0 out of 5 stars a fan gets real, 17 Sept. 2009
This review is from: Ellipse (Audio CD)
owning every works from imogen and via frou frou, i consider myself a fan of her music.

details by frou frou and speak for yourself by imogen are the highlights of both group and solo works respectively, in my opinion

this new album was a let down in some ways;

the lyrics and structure seemed contrived, with immature un-inspired talking pace nursery rhymes thrown in to try and flesh out the songs, a little to formulaic for my tastes

i thought the album was going to be a game of two halves when track 8 came on, and may prove to turn around and rescue the album, but then the album veered back to its dominant characteristics and carried on in the same shallow vein, not engrossing or immersing me like her other albums.

as far as i am concerned speak for yourself should have been the new album. and this should have been an early release from which she should have improved from, maybe even before imegaphone!

don't get me entirely wrong, the album isnt a bad album, comparitively i am pitting it against her own works, which are quite a high standard, its just this seems to have lost that raw imogen heap signature i enjoyed, where more angst and emotion were involved rather than the recital of infantile like words and lyrics in a seeming unrelated melting pot of lyrics.

i hope i am wrong in thinking that this may mark the end of the 'original' imogen heap and all works from now on in are going to be downhill, lets hope this is her creative lull and that in the future she returns to glory and puts out her equivalent to radioheads 'in rainbows' career wise.

to briefly summarise, as a light hearted electro pop album its fine in anyones collection, just maybe not an imogen heap fans.

This review is from: Pusher Trilogy [DVD] (DVD)
if you want to be challenged, gripped, intrigued, eager for the next plot to untwist then this fast moving yet candid observation about the criminal characters involved with crime and drugs might just be the assault on your senses you are looking for...

addictevly watchable, like a page turner of a book, thus never dragging, the first film hits you with the authentic stamp of approval of what Refn, the director is capable and leads you down a rabbit hole of the everyday minutia of the main and sub-characters daily lives.

once you see the first film you will want to watch the last and the only way to do that is to watch the one in between!

if its the only trilogy you treat yourself too this year, it will have been worth it.

bought two of these, worked great to begin with and eventually after a month got more and more flakey! failing to show up in the disk manager and causing everything to hang.

put the sames disks on another external sata to usb adapter and no problems.

bad batch? not sure, but not good. 100% failure, the remaining one is dying on me right now

5.0 out of 5 stars does what it says on the tin, 19 July 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
i have three of these now, all linked upto my router for different things,

500gb for family acessibility (photos, applications, backups etc)

1tb with squeezecenter installed on it, for music for squeezeboxes (google: "Even Easier Squeezecenter Install on Buffalo LinkStation Pro and LinkStation Live" for how to do this)

1tb for dvd backups, movies, tv shows for media tanks/streamers

i havent had an issue with any, all are reasonably quiet in operation, all have great feature sets and seem reliable, i realize hard drives can always go wrong, so would suggest for anyone storing vital stuffs on one, to either hook up an equal sized usb drive to the usb port and mirror the content or have a backup off site...or maybe this is your backup :)

the only slight criticism i have of these units, is that to transfer anything of great size/volume/quantity off your pc to it, does require you to connect via network cable, and is a bit more involved than if there was a USB host port enabling local connection to transfer stuff directly over to unit

very pleased and can only see myself adding more as the network grows

5.0 out of 5 stars great, solid, plug & play system, 15 July 2009
have owned these for approx a year, they are so easy to setup, no interface, no options, just plug them both in and they instantly and reliably find each other and that is your HQ audio link established.

it doesnt waver!, it uses very clever auto-sensing tehnology that will learn and avoid problematic interference frequencies within your home.

i have at least ten various wireless devices in my house (including 2.4 & 5.8ghz ranges) and this manages to co-exist tremendously, the only issue i had initially, was with a buffalo dwa-142 usb rangemaster Wi-Fi adapter, which when in close proximity to the W1 system would cause it to drop out, soon remedied this by switching the buffalo adapter to 20mhz channel width in the driver/windows section. after that no more problems.

although audioengine do tell me, that if you place the router/wi-fi adapter right near the W1 sender for about 5 minutes or so it should learn and avoid the specific frequency

as for the quality, well i am a fairly discerning in that area and use rega CD players and high end earphones and amplifiers, and am nothing less than pleased with the sound, stability of the link and flexibility it affords you without trailing wires.

comes with lots of little leads and everything you need to get you up and going

no hiss at all, like with my sennheiser RS 4200 wireless earphones, this is silent/black background.

just to add, audioengines support has been superb whenever i needed to contact them in the past, i own a pair of their speakers also. so if you want a product built by enthusiasts with no skimping on parts, and a customer service to rival it, audioengine are the guys to buy from A+

Logitech Harmony One UK - Advanced Universal Remote Control (discontinued by manufacturer)
Logitech Harmony One UK - Advanced Universal Remote Control (discontinued by manufacturer)

3.0 out of 5 stars big hassle to setup, 5 July 2009
great remote. but... be prepared to spend hours of time, getting the settings just how you like them, i found it all a bit fiddly, and then it was inconsistent to work.

i love logitech gear and have no bias against them, but this remote, to do what it says on the tin requires a lot of tweaking, and uploading settings and trying it out and back and forth.

the physical hardware is a joy to use, with the recharging dock etc, no problems there.

its the usability factor, and i am experienced in home tech and computers for decades.

this would not be able to be put to intended use by someone who was not up on settings and technology, which i would have thought maybe, would be a target audience, designed to make life easier, but actually easier to use all of your old faithful multiple remotes than learn logitechs way!

well i wont go over old ground, and repeat what the other reviewers say, but this has surely got to be one of the best albums that will appear in 2009, even so early on in the first quarter

a style all of his own with amazing melodies and layered vocals sway to the sound of emotion and engaging theatrical dramaticism with great authenticity, this album has been played for near on two months now, and i listen to it daily which is unsual for me to hold an album for so long in heavy rotation

listening to this album on a rega jupiter transport connected through a dac1 pre out to akg k1000 ear speakers is pure bliss and places you in and amongst antony and the johnsons themselves as they tell their lyrical tales

a front row ticket i indeed have and this is one performance where every track delivers without exception, no one track wonders here, the album is solid as a rock throughout!

go and buy it!
