5.0 out of 5 stars Oh so very good!, 27 Mar. 2017

This film is based on cases that Ralph Sarchie experienced whilst working with the police. Ive read the book he wrote and saw the short series that was on tv for a while where he took on different cases of families plagued by paranormal events.

The plot is around three men who encounter something whilst serving in the military, something they unwittingly bring home. Ralph Sarchie and his police partner start encountering seemingly random call outs that are bizarre to say the least. Sarchie begins to make the connection between them and is drawn into an ugly, terrifying battle to save those involved and the lives of his family.
Along the way he learns that he has the gift of discernment, the ability to sense and identify the entities. He also learns that it is anything but a gift you would ask for!

The real Ralph Sarchie is very much like the portrayal by Eric Banna, which was good to see.
The film is scary for one very good reason. It actually IS based on reality. As hard as it can be to accept, that level of malevolence is out there and destroys peoples lives.

Sarchie has now retired from the police force and dedicates his time to 'The Work', saving those who have been afflicted.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost Awesome, 20 Mar. 2017

I can see what was trying to be achieved with this film. Family acquires haunted antique mirror. Mirror takes control & ultimately kills mum and dad but one of the children, the son, gets the blame of course.
Years later the son is released from prison and with his sister decide to reface the mirror and "kill it". However the mirrors influence causes them to be lost in a time loop and unable to trust what they see, hear, taste or smell.

Everything gets a bit kooky from there. I find myself championing the heroes/victims all the way through but cant see how they are ever going to be able to free themselves.
You are hoping that they manage to gain vengence for their parents but id say the moral of the story is dont try for vengence, or stay away from mirrors, especially that mirror. It doesnt have your best interests at heart.

The ending is a bit...meh! Its a bit of a let down. Your hoping for satisfying victory for our two heroes but that doesnt happen.

The acting is pretty good, especially with Katie Sackoff (Starbuck aka Kara Thrace of Battlestar Galactica) playing Mum. However I think most of the actors were let down by a so-so script and slightly iffy storyline.

So almost awesome!

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, unsettling & oh so clever, 17 Mar. 2017

Im rating the 2008 version here, the original, and not the 2016 remake. Not going to give huge plot spoilers here. Lets just start with that. I would want everyone to experience this exceptional film in the same way I did. Cold.
Throughout the whole film my jaw kept dropping as the story unfolded. Three years after watching it I still have two questions that keep popping up in my head. What did she see? What did she tell her she saw? You will understand my questions after you have watched it.
Now...some have said that the film is so violent and gory that it made them sick. Truth is that the film is shot in such a way that it allows your mind to fill in what you are artfully not actually shown, and there is nothing more violent and gory than the Human imagination. Its the knowledge of what the characters are enduring that is horrific, not the film itself.
My promise to you...this film has stuck in my mind like no other. It made me think long and hard, re-evaluate certain things and above all made me want to know more!
A top watch!

P.s if you are a beginner in the horror film genre than you may wish to start with something a little less hard hitting.

I tried so hard with this. I really wanted to like it but lordy! Poor quality. The Dybbk box they show, and presenter claims to have had in house for two weeks is not THE famous Dybbk box at all. Doesnt even look like it. This is just A Dybbk box so if you were hoping to watch something on the one that currently is buried in a military grade box in a field in America then you will be thoroughly disappointed. As was I watching this series.
This is the first non-positive review I ever left.
Perhaps the film maker should stick to Youtube. Especially considering they have had such a hard time getting enough content on each subject that some episodes are only 11 minutes long!

The Haunting of Fox Hollow Farm

4.0 out of 5 stars The horror of Fox Hollow farm - investigation, 9 Mar. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Both documentary and invetigative components were very good.
One of the most notable modern day serial killer cases in blown open in the 1990's. The paranormal angle that the film makers have taken is very interesting and necessary considering the experiences of the current owners whose life was turned upside down. From sceptics to paranormal witnesses they felt it was time to tell the story of the land and the people who lost their lives there.
Shame about the sound though! Pitches up and down in volume in places. Otherwise would have been a 4.5 rating from me. In places the film dragged a little bit otherwise a good informative watch.

The Booth brothers have tackled a sensitive subject of a time when native American children were taken from the homes and families and stuck in "boarding schools". These schools were not that far from prison camps with 'inmates' not being allowed to speak their mother tongue, dress in the way of their culture, become familiar with violent punishments, even have their hair cut in organised public spectacles were people came to watch their identity being destroyed and a new more acceptable one being forced upon them. Many of these children succumbed to death and their spirits are not at rest.
Part of the film deatures several compelling interviews with Native American Elders who experienced these 'schools' first hand and speak of the horrors they experienced there.

Not only is this an important part of history but this films shows how the history is literally living on and trying to tell its story!

Side note:
A previous viewer seemed caught up on the Booth brothers and seemingly missing the point of the film itself. He states that everytime they were on screen they would put their names on screen. He fails to state that they did this for every other contributer feature on screen in this film too!

A very compassionate look at the children who reside in spirit. This films looks at various haunted locations & has input from well known names in the paranormal field such as Bill Chappell.
Im a paranormal researcher/investigator & psychic/medium myself and thoroughly enjoyed the film. The Booth brothers put together great paranormal evidence, true history, & experience of other paranormal groups to paint a comprehensive and compassinate picture.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth a watch!, 7 Mar. 2017

A good documentary on the tragedy of child orphans in historical America and the impact it has on them in the after life! Why are we seeing so many child hauntings? This documentary uncovers the potential reasons behind the phenomena.
One reviewer says that this a badly made film but frankly ive seen far worse aired on TV. This is a perfectly watchable film. If you are really into paranormal research and investigation then this is a film you will enjoy.
