4.0 out of 5 stars A film that needs patience, but deserves it, 11 May 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've been wracking my brain for a while about this film, bouncing from bored to classic, and I have to agree with above reviews that it's a stunning work. It does tie together influences from other films but it clearly marks Daft Punk territory. Visually stunning and musically harrowing (if the Jackson C. Frank part isn't heart renching I don't know whet is) this film is an awesome development of an already awesome group. Both Punks work really well with minimalism in the film and that vacume creates the perfect setting for the intense emotional sympathy the viewer should feel for these robots' identity crises. It's the kind of film you watch more and more and begin to work out what both artistes are trying to, from being visually stunning to trying to create a sense of what identity means. My pretentious babble aside, it's a really good film

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite the book you expect, 28 Feb. 2007
When I bought this book I thought it was quite an interesting buy which actually made me think about the DPRK differently. First of all one shouldn't think of this book as a historical source which will massively broaden the horizons and help one understand North Korea's political or social history. This book is on the other hand an artistic volume exploring the relationship between socialist slogans and influential images of North Korea. Now when I say this I'm not trying to sound pretentious, but an example would be "The Juche cause will overcome any Impeial ideal and result in Socialist Utopia", and on the opposite page there would be an image such as Kim Jong Il or the Army. In my opinion this book is good as it helps one associate political thought and art, which is a key part in the Kim familly's political and personal cults. Even if you're not into that kind of thing it's quite an interesting read

Stanton Sessions Vol. 2/The Lost Files
Stanton Sessions Vol. 2/The Lost Files

5.0 out of 5 stars Leading the way in DJ'ing, 23 Jan. 2007
Just when you think that the Stanton Warriors are at their best, they just get better and better. This Cd is the kind of Cd that makes me feel very envious of those who may have been in a club dancing away to this. It's constantly buzzing through with an awsome beat and the Warrior's own blueprint basslines smoothly running through the mix. My favourite part has to be the last few songs; having listened to some smooth mixing we're introduced to some melodies weaved in with awsome bass and beats.

Seriously, this the best of breaks at the moment, buy it and you won't regret it,

Chinese-English Dictionary (Harvard-Yenching Institutes publications)
Chinese-English Dictionary (Harvard-Yenching Institutes publications)
by Rh Mathews
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £56.00

5.0 out of 5 stars A very handy dictionary, 23 Nov. 2006
I've been using his dictionary for quite a while now but only bought my first copy a while back and it's been indispensible. What I like about this dictionary is it's application in both classical and modern chinese. For Classical chinese you can use this dictionary to find the majority of words for most Classical texts. For Modern Chinese use it's fine if you know the full form script but otherwise it's a bit of guesswork. In translating Literature I found it vey handy because it contains compounds, making translations much smoother.

To be honest the fact that Wade Giles is used doesn't make it worse. It seems to me that this dictionary doesn't want to move with the times and convert to pinyin but it's quite easy to figure out what it ll means. If you want a great dictionary for translation, this is the one and I would certainly recomend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just what you need for a late night, 26 Oct. 2006
This review is from: Late Night Tales (Audio CD)
I'd read Mixmag's review and believed that this album would be amazing based on their 5 earphones rating. It's not a thrilling album but it does have a certain eerieness about it and when you do come back from a night out it's an amazing album for reflection. Some of the songs are just nice and chilled, but my pick has to be Jeff Alexander's song and the Black Sabbath inclusion. I'll agree with the above that it's not Air as we know it, but it's still a worthwhile buy for chillax purposes.

Kikujiro
Kikujiro

4.0 out of 5 stars I give it 4*, 7 Jun. 2006
This review is from: Kikujiro (Audio CD)
This is just an amazing album to compliment an amazing film. I think the music blends wonderfully with the plot, the music fits in perfectly in the formula 'amazing music + awsome direction) x heartfelt acting = a touching film experience' perfectly.

The reason I gave it 4* was because for me only when something tops Yann Tiersen does it deserve 5*. Although it's a memorable OST, it's doesn't hit the variety and perfect aptness that Tiersen gave Goodbye Lenin and Amelie. B

Buy it though!

If you enjoyed 'Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels'® then you are deffinately going to enjoy this. You out there who have seen/read this there wont be any suprise because it follows the same patern. But it needs to be said that it's worth a read. Those of you that are willing to give it a try, I hope you enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a fantastic film!, 1 Jan. 2001
This review is from: American Beauty [DVD] [2000] (DVD)
This is a truelly fantastic film. I recantly watched some films which are 'classics'. After watching American Beauty it deserves to be a classic. Amazingly directed by Sam Mendes who won the Oscar for Best Diector for his first film. I also had the pleasure of reading the screenplay which is also avalible at Amazon®. Well written by Allan Ball he also won the oscar he deserved for his screenplay. And as for Kevin Speacy, What a guy, he also won the Best Actor at the Oscar®s for this film. It's a DVD/VHS which you will never bore of and will stay a good film in your mind till the day when pigs will fly. It's a fantastic combination of a good movie and spectacular Special Features. A hell of a movie to have in your collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, 14 Dec. 2000
This is a well writen book explooring the ambitions of a child. Fantasticaly writen by Lee Hall the screenplay is almost as good as the film. An obvious contender for the upcoming oscars.
