4.0 out of 5 stars Don't hold the presses, 5 May 2013

Having really enjoyed the excellent documentary about The New York Times photographer, Bill Cunningham, I was possibly expecting too much from this. Having worked in the commercial/advertising side of media for many years I have some insight in to how a newspaper works. But nothing I experienced could compare with the size and scale of The New York Times operation. There is much to admire in both their corporate and editorial structures. I would have appreciated a lot more on these aspects rather than featuring one journalist - even if he is a delightful maverick. Worth buying.

3.0 out of 5 stars Memories are not made of this, 5 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
My memory of Scaffold was firmly rooted in the sixties. Apart from "Lily the Pink," I had not heard any of their work since then. Now I realise why. Yes, there are a few tracks that grab you a little - "Liver Birds," "In my Liverpool Home," and "Liverpool Lou." On the latter, I think Dominic Behan (Yes, brother of Brendan) had a much better version. I also thought he was the author but is not credited. "Thank U Very Much" will probably remain a commercial evergreen but this collection proved to me that nostalgia is not what it used to be. One for the die hard fans. Sadly.

This is John Thaw post-Morse and very good he is too. No surprise there. Sadly, this series was cut off in its prime as was John. Worth having even for its brevity.

Mary Black has One of the finest voices in Ireland. She amply demonstrates it in this collection. If there is a better version of "She moved thru the fair," I have yet to hear it. Well worth the investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Documentary making at its best, 2 April 2013

Ken Burns has a well deserved reputation for producing excellent television work on American history. This collection showcases some of the best of his output. It is wide-ranging From 'The Shakers' to the dawn of radio to the building of the Brooklyn Bridge. Anybody with an interest in American social history must watch this DVD - over and over again. If you do tire of it - then buy Ken Burns' history of the American Civil War. It is also worth noting that Ken Burns' Documentary work has won every available award. Enjoy.

And Man Created God: Kings, Cults and Conquests at the Time of Jesus
And Man Created God: Kings, Cults and Conquests at the Time of Jesus

5.0 out of 5 stars Even Richard Dawkins might enjoy this., 27 Jan. 2013

Ms Selina O'Grady has written a very readable and very accessible book about the origins of Christianity. Although she, largely, lets the reader draw their own conclusions , she does cover the pertaining and relevant "religious" norms of the times. Until reading this excellent book I had never heard of Apollonius and agree with Ms O'Grady when she suggests that this intelligent man might have been as good a role model as Jesus. However, he seems to have suffered from poor PR and did not have a Paul/Saul to further his case.
The book gives many insights into how Christianity evolved as well as covering the other major religions. Augustus, Buddha and Confucius head an ABC of all the relevant cults and movements from Western Europe to Eastern China. Whether you are a religious practitioner or a non-practising atheist like me, you will find it difficult to put this book down. Highly recommended.

To be honest, I really think I only bought this CD because of price and a faint memory of Winchester Cathedral. It finished off a gift card rather neatly. What a pleasant surprise on playing it. Not only did Winchester Cathedral sound even better than I remembered but there is a host of other great tracks on here as well. Speaking of tracks - Finchley Central is a favourite (Yes, me too but just could not resist inflicting it on you.)
Bottom line (sorry) - great CD; well worth the asking price.

My 10 year old grandson saw a hat like this on someone else. He expressed a strong wish to have one. We included with his other Xmas gifts. He has not taken it off since Xmas Day. It is a quality item and well worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Grandchildren's kind of music., 27 Jan. 2013

This CD is the ideal way to shorten a long car journey for a 3 and 5 year old. We enjoy them too. Maybe they don't sound quite as good as a nostalgic memory would suggest but very enjoyable never-the-less. So, not just for oldies - also very useful to keep young children amused in a nice, entertaining, clean and innocent way. The only query we had was from the five year old wanting to know why "they" let seven little girls sit in the back seat and did they all have seat belts. For a bit of hokum fun from the fifties well worth having.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poetry in Motion, 20 Nov. 2012

This is an absolute gem about the life, times and photography of New York photographer, Bill Cunningham. Cycling around the Big Apple in all sorts of weather, Bill Cunningham has lovingly documented the fads and fashions of the city and the "beautiful people" who inhabit that space over more than 50 years. Bill's story is wonderfully captured and told. And it is a wonderful story. What will particularly strike you is his complete lack of interest in money and the finer things of life. He is a loving and very lovable man. Do your mind and body a favour : buy this dvd, watch it and then share with as many people as you can. You will feel all the better for it.
