RHYTHM & BLUES REVIEW / ROCK & ROLL REVIEW / ROCK
Price: £8.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool old Jazz, R&B, Rock'n'Roll..!, 4 April 2017

'Rock 'n Roll Revue' and 'Rhythm 'n Blues Revue' are on the first disc and the picture/sound quality is very good. Excellent, in fact, for what it is. They look good on a HD screen even though the picture hasn't been remastered or anything like that. These are 2 feature films cobbled together from the old "Harlem Revue" TV show back in the mid-1950s. What you get here are jazz and R&B stars of that era and hosted by the amiable "Mayor of Harlem" Willie Bryant. He also takes part in some of the comedy skits. The bonus feature "Rock, Rock, Rock" (on disc 2) is another kettle of fish. It was a theatrical release and the print here is very dubious. A badly transferred 16mm TV print from the look of it.. oh, you can live with it, especially if you are viewing it on an old analogue TV set but on a HD screen it looks pretty bad.. not unwatchable but almost there. It's a little blurry too. Do you really want a plot about Tuesday Weld trying to raise enough money to buy a dress to go to the prom.? Not really.. the reason to watch this would be to see Chuck Berry, The Flamingos and other rock acts of the day. This release is a little pricey but there is some good stuff here and it is a factory pressed dvd.. Most copies of the "Review" movies are DVD-R. You also get a trailer for "Don't Knock The Rock".

A combination of rockabilly and western swing... two of my favourite genres... then add a twist of doo-wop along with a wry grin. This is toe-tappin', feel-good music. Adults will understand.. the little girls probably wont. Highly recommended if you like country-billy with a dash of R&B. Great stuff. Grab it before it goes out of print because this stuff never gets old.. not if you like real music played by guys who really know their stuff... and for God's sake, do yourself a favour and get "Full Throttle" and "3rd Base" by Swedish rockabillies The Hub Caps before they also disappear. A pleasant time is guaranteed for all.

5.0 out of 5 stars New VINYL review., 3 April 2017

This sounds GREAT on the new 180 gram Mono vinyl. I have this album on a stereo cd and it's pretty good. I also owned it back in the 1960s vinyl days probably on a stereo record but this new MONO pressing blew me away with it's body, soul and clarity. It sounds FANTASTIC on vinyl... and the iconic artwork is wonderful (R.I.P. Suze Rotolo)... and guess what? There be a whole lot of liner notes on the other side of the cover that you can actually READ.. yeah, you heard me.. you can read this stuff without the aid of one of those jeweller's eye-pieces that you need to peruse the bacteria-size notes in a cd. It's all win-win with this vinyl.. of course, if you don't like Dylan or his music then don't bother... but if you're serious about the man then buy this on vinyl along with "Bringing It All Back Home". "Highway 61" and "Blonde.." .. you gotta have that stuff on vinyl, man.. there is no other way. You should already have the stereo cd box set anyway but when you are holding vinyl in your hands then you feel you have something truly substantial and lasting.. This is a work of art in all respects and you should own it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Stones album EVER.!, 18 Mar. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Undercover (Audio CD)
This is a great Stones album simply because it sounds nothing like the Stones.. well, there is no mistaking Jagger's dweeby vocals but otherwise it's nothing like their earlier stuff (which wasn't all that great anyway). It has that over-amplified 1980s 'gated reverb' drumming as well. The cheesy cover art is expected from cheese merchants like The Rolling Stones and the music is just dripping with camembert. Hadn't heard this since the 80s so I bought a copy just for fun and yeah, I kind of enjoyed it even though I knew it was cr@p. Played it once.. put it away.. might play it again sometime. No way these guys are the world's greatest rock'n'roll band. That honour goes to The Monkees. Buy "More Of The Monkees" instead of this cd. "Your Auntie Griselda" is a much better song than "Undercover" and "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone" beats "Too Much Blood" hands down.

1.0 out of 5 stars Monotonous drivel..!!, 24 Feb. 2017
Talk...talk...talk... talk.... here we go again. I don't care if this is historically inaccurate. I want entertainment.. so what if one takes a few liberties with the truth in the name of entertainment. This is not a documentary. This series commits the greatest sin of all. IT'S BORING. Total tedium that never lets up. It's as bad a Black Sails. Both series have pretty boys miscast as historical characters and both series are so sleep inducing that I can't stand anymore.. I bought the Complete Series 1-4 box set of this garbage but I wont be going past the first disc of series one. God, it's DULL. Long-winded and DULL. Even though the episodes are only 45 minutes long on average, I can take no more of this cr@p.

Oh, sorry. I just realised that I have been watching Series 3 instead of series 1. No wonder I am clueless as to what is going on. So I watched the first bit of season 1 and in the first few minutes some guy gets stabbed to death. Now THAT'S more like it. As Popeye the sailor would say: "That's Entertainmink..!" Still only 1 star though because the stabbing wasn't very graphic and heads weren't flying like in Spartacus.

1.0 out of 5 stars Tedium on the high seas., 21 Feb. 2017
This review is from: Black Sails: Season 1 [DVD] (DVD)
High seas..?? HA.! ...WHERE..? Okay ..there is a little bit of seafaring here but not much. It's mainly land-logged. This show (season 1) is about 75% talking......... and talking....... and talking... and talking, about 20% of dull simulated sex and 5% action. I have recently watched Mad Men, GoT, Spartacus, The Borgias, and all of those shows had me wanting to come back and watch more episodes (sometimes up to 5 per day) but Black Sails is so boring that I dread coming back. The only reason I do is because I paid good money for it and I might as well see where it goes.

Just about all of the characters annoy me but the worst of these are the three BINTS. The Jamaican lesbian whore, the bottle-blonde bimbo who runs the island, and the brooding pirate broad, Anne Bonney. All three are foul-mouthed b!#ches we can do without and none do anything for the story except bog it down. There IS a story there but it's so meandering and convoluted that I wish you luck trying to find it. Something about intercepting a Spanish galleon but a page of the ship's schedule is missing. The well-spoken pretty-boy playing Long John Silver is a joke. The fellow who plays Captain Charles Vane has his voice dubbed in as a kind of gruff, whispering, British Steven Seagal.. all in all, it just doesn't work for me. I expected better of Michael Bay. I'm giving my copy to the charity shop.

Keep on Truckin: The Very Best of Hot Tuna
Keep on Truckin: The Very Best of Hot Tuna
Price: £6.41

1.0 out of 5 stars Smells like fish., 12 Feb. 2017
The first Hot Tuna album was okay.. it was a live effort and was mainly just Jack Cassidy and that Kaukonen kid (both from J. Airplane) doing some standard blues tunes in a small club. It got tiresome after a while but it wasn't bad.. Then as they got bigger they got more boring and predictable.. so basically after "Hesitation Blues" and "Death Don't Have No Mercy" (the first two tracks here off the first album) it goes downhill all the way. "Candy Man" is a joke. It doesn't work on any level. It's all pretend.. like the cover art. It's not really Crumb but it pretends to be...! Jack and Jorma are fine musicians but somehow this just doesn't work for me.. neither does the first Taj Mahal album. It's okay, but it's the same ol' blues, the same ol' blues.... again.

2.0 out of 5 stars TOTALLY WRONG..!!!, 27 Jan. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I thought that this was T Rex doing Bob Dylan covers because of the picture of Marc Bolan on the cover.. I thought "The Cutting Edge" was the name of Bolan's 1960s band (before T Rex) and "The Best of The Cutting Edge" meant that this is the best of their Dylan covers. Amazon should be more clear with their descriptions. If you sell Bob Dylan albums then please do not put Marc Bolan's picture on the front cover...and if The Cutting Edge doesn't exist as a band then don't advertise it as such. My God, those poor people who bought the 18 disc version. How confused they must have been when it arrived.. It's criminal.

This is a pretty good Bellamy Brothers cd set except for the fact that Howard went bald and always looked kinda grumpy in photos after that. Well, let's just say "introspective" to be kind. Always wore a ten gallon hat too. Bald rock stars tend to do that. Look at Dwight Yoakam. He is as bald as a badger. I remember once on The Tonight Show when Jay Leno threatened to remove Dwight's hat.. boy, Yoakam didn't like that one bit although he laughed it off. There is a great clip on YouTube with Pat Boone twirling a lasso and he accidently flips his hairpiece off.. Man, how embarrassing... he went over to Aaron Neville and took his hat, put it on his own head and did a pathetic Will Rogers impersonation which didn't fool anybody. Pat Boone is a relative of legendary frontier hero Daniel Boone and that is why we must take a hatchet to his records. You should buy this cd because it has tons of photos of Howard looking royally ticked off.. and a couple of him with hair too.
