5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational as ever, 8 Aug. 2015

Twenty words are required but I would prefer to keep this as streamlined as the stories themselves. They are exquisite and scintillating. A fine collection

Fantastically drawn characters, well paced plot, and above all exquisite writing make this a superb follow up to the wind up girl--which I also loved. A cracking author.

Fast paced and written with zest. Enjoyed the well maintained suspense, and character developments as the prose delicately unravelled. Enjoyed the ending too.

Really enjoyed this. Justified the hype that I'd heard about it. Would heartily recommend this. When's the film coming out?

5.0 out of 5 stars essential for all A2 Latin students, 18 May 2014
This review is from: Ovid Unseens (Paperback)
A brilliant textbook for those new to translating Ovid's poetry as well as gnarled veterans. A great discussion of his style--syntax and word order are covered with real aplomb, provoking interest and offering exemplar analysis; a superbly thought out and useful list of the 450 most common Ovidian words; useful modus operandi for those new to scansion and some nice practice examples (with answers provided at the back). The book can be used whether Elegiacs or Hexameters are on the examination menu. My students and I will be using this for a long time to come (assuming the syllabus is not tampered with in the near future!) Who's going to do one of these for the Prose paper?

3.0 out of 5 stars Diverting, but not immersive enough, 5 Feb. 2012
This review is from: Anansi Island (Kindle Edition)
I agree with the previous review. This was entertaining, but it didn't punch me enough (if that makes sense). Likewise the prose was not as finely tuned as 'the human legacy' story, which I really enjoyed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Neat and brutal, 5 Feb. 2012
I really enjoyed the neat, apposite prose and the fast pace. It was a very entertaining read, and I felt like several other reviewers that I wanted more of this. Nevertheless, very enjoyable and most thought-provoking

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely, dark and imaginative, 21 Jan. 2012
Really enjoyed the language of the narrator, the long kafkaesque descriptions of her interminable, compulsive routines, and the unfolding of the story. Nicely paced, and hugely entertaining. Raced through this one

5.0 out of 5 stars Have to agree with the reviews below, 21 Jan. 2012
A great reference book. A brilliant companion piece (for me anyway) to Williams' book on the vases in the BM. I keep this within arms' reach at all times. You never know when you might need it. Especially liked the visual representation of the firing process and the close ups of relief lines. Does that make me a nerd?

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely well written and engaging, 21 Jan. 2012
This review is from: Greek Vases (Paperback)
Found this very useful. It is a comprehensive, lively and engaging read. Most informative and a superb companion to the vase rooms in the British Museum. For all Athenian Vase enthusiasts (come on, raise your hands!). I can't recommend this highly enough.
