4.0 out of 5 stars Every family should have one., 6 Oct. 2016

A great solution to the problem of having nowhere near enough electric sockets to cover all of the devices which need charging. This one has the full 2A to each USB port, so everything gets fast-charged.

Build quality seems pretty solid - this feels like a quality item.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheap and surprisingly cheerful, 6 Oct. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Purchased as a cheap practice amp for my son.

This is very much a "cheap and cheerful" amp, and it has its faults. The sound quality is just OK - punchy and plenty of volume, but with limited tone control and a light on the highest and lowest frequencies. Build quality around the controls is a bit flimsy, and probably won't take too many knocks. The SD Card features look as though they are basically gimmicks that won't get used.

For the money though, it is almost impossible to fault. Rechargeable batteries with a good long life. Light and easy to use. Headphone socket and microphone input as well. It's the sort of thing that every electric guitarist could use, and far better than most of the branded mini-amps at twice the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Ice Cream Maker - but huge., 6 Oct. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Purchased to replace a much cheaper "best buy" freeze the pot ice cream maker which broke about 30 seconds after it went out of warranty.

The most important part is... it makes really good ice cream. I have found that it usually needs a little longer to freeze the mixture adequately than recipes suggest, but the results are smooth, creamy and utterly delicious. The freezing process is considerably better than the previous machine.

It's pretty large - about the size of a large slow-cooker, so make sure you have the space to put it away. I don't find it noisy - it does have a compressor, so it was never going to be silent, but it really isn't intrusive. Having the compressor allows you to make relatively larger batches of ice cream - where with the "freeze a large pot" variety, you need to re-freeze the pot. This is quite an advantage.

It seems to be pretty solidly put together, and I expect it will provide many years of service.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous for the discount price., 10 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Purchased as a Christmas present for my son, who has been borrowing my Fuji X100S too frequently for my liking. This was sold at an extremely attractive price by Amazon, and the rating reflects my purchase price (about £220, if I recall correctly). At the original £450 or so it would probably be a 3* review as the competition at £450 is extremely strong from full-sized SLRs.

The Q10 received lukewarm reviews at the time of launch in the press, mainly because it was priced alongside some great DSLRs with APS-C sensors, and with its smaller sensor it just couldn't compete on ultimate image quality. Let's get this part out of the way: the X100S takes better pictures, and when blown up large enough, the difference shows. That Fuji is nearly four times the price I paid for this Pentax though. Against compacts and Smartphones, which are the more natural competitors at this price it is no contest: the Pentax blows them away.

The Q10 and supplied lens (which is roughly equivalent to a 24-70mm zoom lens) are of the usual excellent Pentax build quality. This is a very well built camera that should give many years of service. The control system is basically the same as a DSLR, just smaller. This works perfectly for my son, but if you have fat fingers it may be a bit fiddly.

The rear screen has good resolution, and is easy to view in all but the very brightest sunlight.

Photos are very creditable. Softer and with reduced detail compared to my X100S, and low light performance is a long way behind the outstanding Fuji. Compared to most of the compact competition, however, the results are very good.

At £220, this is a steal.

Nulaxy Adapter Convert Keyboard & Mouse to Bluetooth Keyboard & Mouse

3.0 out of 5 stars Great idea - some niggles in execution (at least using with a Mac) mean it's not all I hoped for., 10 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have a Filco keyboard and a Logitech trackpad, both of which I love. While I could plug them into my Macbook Pro every day, it is short on USB connections, and Bluetooth, if it worked seamlessly, would be great. I have been looking for something like this product for quite some time.

The Nulaxy looks great in photos. The reality is not quite so good: the plastic case has a pretty cheap feel, and (more seriously) one of the USB connections wasn't lined up very well with the plastic aperture and needed care to insert a cable. The device is supplied with a USB to micro-USB cable for power, or you can use a pair of AA batteries.Once set up it looks pretty good on the desk, and overall fit and finish is acceptable given the low price.

The device powered up straightforwardly and paired with Bluetooth on my Mac seamlessly. There were a few niggles getting my keyboard mapping correct on the Mac (Apple ships a key map for a US PC compatible keyboard, but there are a couple of issues with the UK version of the PC keyboard). These are nothing to do with the Nulaxy, and I solved them using a piece of free software called Ukulele, which allows you to define custom key maps.

Keyboard and trackpad were responsive, and with a little tweaking of settings I had everything working as I wished. So far we are on for at least a 4* review.

Unfortunately, I found that when closing down the laptop and then later bringing it back, the Nulaxy needed to be power cycled to make the keyboard and trackpad responsive. This is a great shame as it is probably the most important part of the use case for me.

I also found,on occasions, the some of the 'sticky' keys would stick on (e.g. Caps Lock stuck on several times) and a power cycle of the Nulaxy was again required to fix things.

Overall this is a very promising device, but there are clearly a few issues in the firmware that need to be ironed out. A version 1.1 that fixes these issues would be a great product.

Cyrus Soundcan Portable Bluetooth Speaker

4.0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly good, tiny speaker, 7 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Great sound for such a small speaker - it really is tiny, and fits unobtrusively into even a small bag. I travel frequently by air, and usually try to take only cabin baggage, and this is ideal as space is very much at a premium. Very stable on surfaces and seems to have a good battery life. Also feels pretty well made.

It's not HiFi, despite the Cyrus name, and bass is inevitably a little light (much improved if you place it into a corner), but it produces a very creditable sound - about equivalent to my Pure Evoke DAB Radio.

It can generate enough volume to fill a typical lounge, but don't expect it to power a party. It struggles a little outside - I would use something significantly larger for a barbecue, as there is sometimes no substitute for size.

BT hands-free operation is only OK, but that's not really why I bought it.

Prince Lionheart Corner Guards (Grey)
Prince Lionheart Corner Guards (Grey)
Price: £3.25

3.0 out of 5 stars Very soft - not sure how durable., 7 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Larger than they appear in the images. Very soft.

Do the job, but I am worried that they might come off of the table quite easily as attachment is by (apparently extra strong) double sided tape - time will tell.

Fitting slightly fiddly as you just get some rectangular pieces of tape to put onto the corner guards yourself - I would have liked to see these pre-attached.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fit for purpose, but in no way comparable to a decent mattress., 7 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Quite a few reviews claim that this is an incredibly comfortable bed. It isn't.

It is, however, plenty comfortable enough to use for a couple of weeks without waking each morning with an aching back, so it makes an ideal spare bed for visitors, or for a camping/apartment holiday.

I found that comfort was quite sensitive to how much the bed was inflated - not too much seemed to work best.

I should also note that mine wasn't 100% airtight, but in my view a top-up every 5 days or so (whites what I did) is not unreasonable.

I'm overall pretty happy with the purchase - it does exactly what it is supposed to do, but please don't buy it to replace a good mattress. That's not what it is for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for Prime members, 7 May 2015
Cheap, works very well with Plex and iPlayer. Finally makes Prime Instant Video a usable proposition for the family. Setup is really easy.

If you have Prime you'd be mad not to buy one at this price.

Minor downside: HDMI output quality not quite as good as my Mac Mini, but then it was quite a bit cheaper!
