Picked this up as a preamble to seeing the Jayhawks this summer, but prefer the later Gary Louris-penned material on 'Rainy Day Music', 'Sound of Lies' and 'Smile', in truth. All of which have been getting plenty of plays, while, I'm afraid this doesn't.

4.0 out of 5 stars Having really liked Jayhawks tracks from years back, 27 Aug. 2014
This review is from: Sound Of Lies (Audio CD)
Having really liked Jayhawks tracks from years back, bought a couple of albums well before catching them on their UK tour this summer and this, along with 'Rainy Day Music', has been a pleasure. Great songs, fine arrangements, memorable hooks - and they were great on the night, too!

4.0 out of 5 stars It's a grower!, 27 Aug. 2014

This was a bit of a 'must-buy' for me, given my enthusiasm for Chris Smither.
Having seen him last year in Manchester and spoken after the gig about this retrospective, I had high expectations. I guess the only reason this isn't five-star is that those possibly out-stripped the collection.
It is, however, pretty special and a grower. Needs listening to a few times; these are all familiar songs, but treated in new ways. If you are used to Chris' spare, solo, live style some of these arrangements - with accompanying musicians (and there are some great names here) - will take a bit of listening-in. But do make the time - it's good.

4.0 out of 5 stars 'Band' -feel, 20 Jan. 2014

Having picked up 'Dirt Farmer' and readily fallen in love with it, I bought this album with high expectations. It is good and I play it a fair bit. It has great old blues numbers and those country influences. It has a strong feel of a 'Band' set, but pared-down a little.
Levon Helm's voice and style is still v much there and I would certainly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice package, 20 Jan. 2014

Heard this reviewed on the radio and thought I'd pick it up.
The package as a whole is v nicely put together - book is great and the two music CDs are good, too. The live album is better and has a great feel - rawness and vigour. The studio album is less so and feels slightly rough at the edges. Nonetheless, it is a satisfying set and Rory fans will enjoy it.

Having picked up 'Motoring along' on CD a year or two ago (having had it on a v old cassette tape from a mate since 1990!) I was keen to explore a little more of Sims and Cohn. This is a great selection of tracks and while I was initially taken aback by the vocals on three songs i have come to really like them. If you like these guys at all, this is a good buy - as always their duetting sax-playing is fab.

Inspiring Achievement: The Life and Work of John Hunt
Inspiring Achievement: The Life and Work of John Hunt
by Ingrid Cranfield
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars A most enjoyable 'life', 15 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a 'life' of the man by lots of ordinary (and other) people who knew him well and came into contact with John Hunt over his long life of public service. It's is not especially critical or probing, but that's not it's purpose, I guess. This seems to have been a compilation to, rightly, celebrate his achievements.
I came to it as a former Probation Officer and Napo member for whom John was President of Napo and the inspiration for the 'Napsac' walking group within Napo. John's role in that wee organisation was crucial and enduring and his book offered an opportunity to fill out the picture of him as a public figure with considerable influence and, clearly, held in very great respect.
A worthwhile and enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine stuff, 15 Sept. 2013

This is a fine album of beautifully-written and executed songs. If you've not heard Gillian Welch, this would be a good intro, but is also, for me, a welcome addition. Top stuff!

Within a few pages I realised I was not going to enjoy or finish this book. The quality of the writing is poor, is pedestrian and has abundant clumsy sentence-construction or grammatical errors.
Joanne Rowling seriously needs a good editor. It's also fearfully long.
There are so many good books out there in the world - don't spend time on this one!
