5.0 out of 5 stars The snake eats its tail !!, 30 April 2017
This review is from: Predestination [DVD] (2014) (DVD)
It starts violently then seems to peter out for about half an hour but stick with it as that time is to set the scene for what turns out to be an excellent film about cause and effect. At the end you have to sit back and think about all the connections to make sense of what happened but when you do it'll all become clear. It's the sort of film you need to watch twice so you don't miss any of the clues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read, 28 April 2017
A long book with lots of twists and turns but if you get into it it's very gripping. Nick Bryson is rather like an intelligent version of Lee Child's Jack Reacher they both have very similar military backgrounds and both are apparently indestructible. Bryson seems to have lots of luck especially when the odds are stacked against him but if you like this sort of book you'll love this offering. Don't be put off by the negative reviews - yes it's complicated and very involved but if you give it a chance you'll reap the benefits.

4.0 out of 5 stars Food for thought !!, 17 April 2017
You need an open scientific mind to watch this and not to be hampered by religious dogma. The ideas put forward make a lot more sense than any religion where you're asked to accept that there's a "god" controlling our fate and if we disobey him ( or her) we'll be eternally damned. It's far more likely that the so called gods are actually advanced civilizations that regard us as nothing better than microbes in a petri dish. Don't watch if you're not the sort of person who can listen to alternative explanations for why we're here. If you believe in God why stop there why not accept that there's a tooth fairy and other equally unlikely spiritual entities - belief in God is really a way of saying "I can't understand it so I'll make up a supernatural being to pray to then all will be fine" - dream on !!

4.0 out of 5 stars A tale of horrible people, 13 April 2017
An interesting story where none of the characters is likeable especially all the children who seem to be typical of the spoilt brats that seem to be in the majority in this politically correct age where you're not allowed to discipline your kids for fear of stifling their development. The main character Paul is particularly obnoxious leaving a trail of devastated people in his wake and although he deserves all that happens to him you do feel that most of the others are just as bad if not worse as they seem to be able to hide under a cloak of respectability - I suppose the moral in this tale is "Pride goes before a fall".

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring, 2 April 2017
This review is from: Youth [DVD] [2016] (DVD)
Excellent cast - rubbish film. It was like watching paint dry nothing happened it just kept going round in circles and ended up like a snake eating its own tail. If you're in the mood for a depressing way to spend nearly two hours then watch it otherwise do something more interesting like washing the car !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 28 Mar. 2017
Truly excellent series exploring a parallel universe and its influence on our existence , the only glitch is the "Brown Betty" episode 20 in series 2 that deals with Walter telling Ella a story depicted in a 1940s style way that doesn't sit well with the rest of the episodes. Notwithstanding if you skip over this aberration the rest of the series excels, all ages can enjoy this series I'm 65 !! I've watched the whole series and I'm holding off watching the last disc as I don't want it to end it's that good - not many sci-fi sets are as good as this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 20 Mar. 2017
This review is from: Wild [DVD] [2014] (DVD)
An excellent film on the face of it about a 1000 mile walk on the American Pacific coast but it's really about a damaged woman exorcising her demons as she faces incredible difficulties along the way. Based on a true story Reese Witherspoon is perfect in the role, the many flashbacks and excellent sound track add to the overall effect , it's a powerful film about coming to terms and dealing with what's wrong in your life - one to watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Poignant tale of Wartime life, 16 Mar. 2017
This review is from: Housewife, 49 [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
A poignant story based on the diary of Nella Last, who described herself as a Housewife, 49, in her submissions to a World War II Mass Archive project. The film follows Nella's life during the war from 1939 to 1945, as she blossoms from a timid mouse, dominated by her bigoted husband , to a determined organized leader of the WVS and Red Cross.
Victoria Wood does a great job portraying the sadness, humor and poverty of wartime. She lives through the personality changes of her sons, and the deaths of their friends, although she refused to admit that her younger son Cliff was gay even though he was distraught over the death of his handsome male companion . Cliff later became a noted sculptor in Australia.
