Black Elk Speaks: Being the Life Story of a Holy Man of the Oglala Sioux
Black Elk Speaks: Being the Life Story of a Holy Man of the Oglala Sioux
by John Gneisenau Neihardt
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars A story of illegal immigrants., 2 Jun. 2017

A fascinating book which gives an authentic account of Native American life and religious beliefs during a time of land-grabbing and widespread genocide by white invaders. I found it particularly interesting that horses played a pivotal rôle in the visions experienced, when (as I understand it) horses had been introduced in to America by the Spanish only a couple of hundred years earlier.
The Battles of Little Big Horn and Wounded Knee are covered in some detail from 'the other perspective'.
It left me wanting to learn more about the Indian tribes.

This review is from: The Great Push (Paperback)
I had two grandfathers who were seriously wounded in the trenches during the Great War. I knew they must have had some horrific experiences. This book confirms it more clearly than any other I've read. The most horrifying aspect is the stolid acceptance of the massive death toll and suffering which had to be assumed if one was to preserve one's sanity in those ghastly conditions.
And it was all promoted as one's patriotic duty, most loudly by those who didn't have to take part...

Doctor Who - Complete Series 6 [DVD]
Doctor Who - Complete Series 6 [DVD]
Dvd ~ Matt Smith
Offered by Amore DVD
Price: £15.02

3.0 out of 5 stars Great box!, 2 Jun. 2017
The production values are excellent and while I'm getting used to Matt Smith as the Doctor, I find Amy Pond and the wimpy Rory (him with all the personality of a guppy) downright irritating. Plots are far too complicated to be entertaining and characterisations are inconsistent .Amy Pond an expert sword fighter? Rory: Simpleton? Clown? Fearless combatant? An old-time pirate captain with detailed knowledge of artificial life support systems?
The high spot for me was discovering a multi-DVD box that actually released the discs without a struggle and the constant fear that it would be bent and damaged.

4.0 out of 5 stars Too tight like that!, 6 April 2017
The music is great - and I have to agree with the other reviewers as to the quality of the recordings. I have one serious complaint though. The discs come in a double CD case and they are next to impossible to get out without bending them. The central clip is hard plastic with no 'give' whatsoever.
This leaves me with a choice. Having struggled to remove them (and having split a fingernail in the process) I can either use a craft knife to hack pieces off the clip to produce a looser fit, or make copies of the discs to add to my CD library - that is, if the rough handling hasn't damaged the originals.

Theme music from the various tv series.
It seemed a lot more authentic as background music.

Another collection of Searle's cartoons, typical of his work but perhaps appearing a little dated. An interesting addition to the aficionado's bookshelf

Country Lives Remembered
Country Lives Remembered
by Brian P. Martin
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Traditional Skills Recalled., 9 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've read several of Brian Martin's books and while they are good, I was left with a feeling that perhaps they didn't have an 'olden days' feel to them - although that's just my opinion. It can be a disadvantage when you still have clear memories of the way things were in the 1940s!
This book is different. It delivers everything the blurb promises, and more. Tales of the good old days recounted by people in their 70s and 80s and peppered with extracts from works by the likes of Gilbert White (1789) and William Howitt (1830), it abounds in authenticity and should appeal to anyone with a love of the English countryside the way it used to be.

Great recording, except that it's not Dickie Valentine. It's Guy Mitchell. Of course.
